In terms of overall character, I’d say Junpei was slightly better than the other two. His extremely low start is what made blaze of life so euphoric. We saw him go through so much that his contrast by the end felt so amazing to watch. Insecurities are also really common. And while it’s very distracting for the characters to nearly die, only for Junpei to translate his feelings of inferiority as contempt for the mc, he always apologizes afterwards, and he only actually allowed it endanger his friends once(Which may be once too many…), which helps make his altercations feel more believable.
I still prefer seeing Ryuji most of the time though. Ryuji was alone for so long and also had to deal with his inner conflict of loneliness and justice. It makes sense why he likes Joker so much. His insecurity doesn’t come from feeling less than him, and it doesn’t even look like he enjoys fighting. It’s much easier for me to believe Ryuji is Joker’s friend, because they help each other progress with their shared ideology, and Joker helped Ryuji with a more practical-reliant problem e.g. sticking by him, helping him remain calm when confronted by his former track team, collecting dirt on Kamoshida’s lap dog, all to help Ryuji make peace with his former past which could NOT have been remeided with their supernatural powers(Ryuji helps Joker out practically too by working out with him.). Ryuji makes being a friend easy, which is what friendship should be. Not complaining to the other that you’re not a special as them.
