You should probably add some underground tunnels (since the game takes place in a war). You should also add some reinforcements and have the fog completely block out the other team's troops (for some maps). Maybe add some special conditions like a snowstorm or heatwave which could affect the gameplay (heatwave could very slowly kill all of the troops forcing you to have to build up a sizeable army but also attack quickly, and snowstorm could slow down all troops by a decent amount). You could also add some more variety to the troops in terms of design, or add a unit that buffs other units. There should be different types of models of tanks. Desert maps should reduce the amount of cash (or medals in this case) and maybe include some maps that are next to military bases (if that makes sense in the story of the game. Those types of maps should increase the currency for both sides. The research system could possibly lead to using vehicles (like humvee's) and possibly have it be user controlled.

    Some suggestions :
1/ Research should allow you to unlock units. You begin with only the rifleman, and slowly progress through the tree.
2/ The Shotgunner should only be unlocked at the end, and be a really strong trench-cleanser. As others proposed, it should go in the trench to clean it up.
3/ Speaking of going in the trenches, riflemen should too : They are equipped with bayonets, and they are here to do a whole lot of stabbin" mate. In fact, if riflemen attack, they should prioritize melee, even if they meet an enemy inbetween trenches.
4/ Tanks should not just have high HP, but have a damage reduction againdt small weaponry (Rifles, SMGs, shotguns, machineguns...). That defense shouldn't apply to explosives or AT weapons. (Artillery, for example. Or other ideas that follow.)
5/ You should be able to choose between AT Cannon and Machinegun to defend. (AT cannon is basically a cannon that fires AT shells. Deals excellent damage, needs a long reload time, can miss, does not explode on impact, making it unfit to defend against troops, but good at defending tanks)
6/ If a tank gets overrun by infantry (For example, infantry charging a lone tank), the tank should immediately get destroyed (Some soldiers carrying AT equipment sabotaging the tanks, which is why you don't want the tanks going in alone, and you want them supported by infantry. The infantry defends the tank, the tank defends the infantry). This forces massive pushes and allows a full-infantry to take down a tank even without specialized units. (add this to the research tree?)
7/ Add flamethrower servants. They are slow-moving, have a limited range, but when they fire, they leave a trail of inferno on the ground, damaging ALL units in it. (Tanks take less damage)
8/ Add Anti-tank units. Armed with rifles like the Mauser 1918 T-Gewehr, these units are equipped with anti-material rifles that are slow-firing, but deal a LOT of damage to armored units.

Suggestion: I think a pretty cool feature would be if you could have Tunnel Diggers, in WW1 there where people, who digged tunnels to nearby enemy Trenches, so you could upgrade Infantry to Tunnel Diggers, they’d still be like Infantry, but if an enemy Trench is in a specific range, they could build a Tunnel there. This would make it so you can send men to trenches without having to run through the no mans land, and they would just appear in the enemy trench.

Maybe make it like the shotgunner has to get a little bit more closer to the enemy trenches in order to shoot but deal quite a lot of damage like maybe killing 2-3 enemy stickmen at a time but is very vulnerable while running to get close to enemies, which is why you also need a lot of riflemen at least 3-5 each maybe? in order to give "covering fire" to the shotgunner so he can get close enough to deal damage

This is purely a design suggestion, but I think you should add more things to the terrain because the area between the trenches is pretty empty, and I guess you could make different maps terrain unique so they give buffs and debuffs like slower movement speed in areas with mud or extra cover if your in a crater.

    1. Adding an Armory in the Main menu where different troops can be selected, thus giving each game more of an up or down depending on which troops you decide to bring, for example deciding not to bring a officer and the enemy decides to bring gas.
    2. for the weather maybe add heavy fog which completely limits the units view, so when pushing over no mans land units will have 'cover' because the enemy wont see them. but you wont see the enemy either unless you use a new unit which is a scout unit which will crawl to the enemy line to reveal their positions. the scout unit can even have a Luger as his only weapon.
    3. Gunning run, which a shadow of a attack chopper will be cased over the battlefield while shooting a barrage of bullets on the enemy, will be extremely effective in no-mans land but do very poorly against trenches .
    4. a unit that can disarm mines? Then add mines to the normal mode as an extra equipment or even as an bunker upgrade but only in front of the home base. so the unit will defuse to mines which will save the rest of the units, maybe he as a special suit that bombproof.
    5. A button that can replenish the sand bags in the trenchers, and if the sand bags are at a certain percentage full will increase survival chances.
    6. another upgrade to the trenches that will add bob wire that will slow down tanks and even damage them.
    7. Baynet for the riflemen which they will use to stab the enemy when they get to the trenches instead of shooting them.
    8. Suicide bomber?, or even just a grenade unit.
    9. An option to chose between the machine gun at the trenches, and a new flame flower unit which will have less range but more have more damage.
    10. An unit that lays traps in enemy trenches, meaning if you have captured a certain trench and decide to Bobbie trap it with explosives or even gas the next unit friendly or enemy will set of the trap, which give more value to the retreat button as well as you would not want your troops setting of the trap and at the same time batting the enemy into one.

    SUGGESTIONS:
    1) you should add the possibility to upgrade the trenches with mortars, giving the possibility to be more effective on tanks and giving a longer range than the machinegun, but less accurate and with a slower fire speed.
2)You should also add a flamethrower unit and a rocket launcher unit (very effective against tanks).
3)You can also add a feature to upgrade your troops giving them molotov cocktails or grenads to throw while charging to an enemy trench.
4)You can add a specialized combat unit that is faster and try to get in the enemy trench and fight with hand-to-hand combat keeping busy the enemy troops stopping them from shooting your other units
5)you should add healthbars for the troops and a medic unit that cures them
6)you should add a radio communications unit that grant your airstrikes more precision
    7) you should add the possibility to create minefields as a defense
    8) if you create more factions you can maybe give each one of them a special unit that recalls the shock troops of different nations ( like the "arditi" for the italians or the "Stormtroopers" for the germans)

    Suggestion:
    1. Depending on how long a troop is on the field (i.e it hasn't died for a long time.) They will be "Sleep Deprived" which gives a effect of making the units slower.
    2. When it is raining and you haven't upgraded the trenches, it makes the soil very muddy giving them a effect of slowness, and poisoning.
    3. Add a smoke bomb, something that decreases the enemies accuracy by 89%: This also happens to your troops, if they are in the range, the enemies will also have range deducted , same as your troops if they are in the smoke. This allows retreats easily as the enemy basically cannot shoot you.

I think you should add in a reinforcement slot. Every so often about five or six random soldiers come on the battlefield. And we can have the same for tanks like tank reinforcements every 30 seconds to a minute. So if you're trying to save up you'll still have infantry on the battlefield fighting. And having some air strikes wouldn't be bad either.

  • @Itz.Eva12

Another Suggestion: The upgrade tree should have discounts to make purchasing troops cheaper and you should be able to directly upgrade your troops by raising their ranks therefore improving the quality of the each troop. The lowest rank Cadet would be the standardized and weakest level of all units while the rank Elite would be the highest and most powerful rank of all the troops. There can also be visuals for each rank for example, the troops wearing small badges or different equipment depending on which rank they're in.

    For endless mode:
It seems that the wave difficulty increase linearly with each wave, but maybe you could try to have big waves separate by smaller waves where you can rebuild and prepare your defence:
Like big waves every 5 waves and massive waves every 10 waves? Or even mini boss every 10 waves (tank? other special vehicles?) and maybe include artillery randomly during the quieter waves to keep the player on edge.

For different factions, you could have a map of Europe and all major WW1 Fronts and have battles listed in chronological order with the factions that fought there, and to unlock more, you have to win/lose those before. Here is some suggestions I had
-Add more terrain pieces, like artillery craters, destroyed tanks, fallen trees, etc.
-More types of trench emplacements, like a sandbag upgrade that increases damage resistance of the troops on the trenches while decreasing attack range or razor wire that slows down the enemy from capturing your trench, buying time for reinforcements.
-For the tech tree each units will have two paths of five upgrades. Example path one for the rifleman specializes on adding more rifleman for the cost of one while the second path focuses on improving damage output. While you can get the first tier one upgrades you will be locked to a path once you buy the tier two upgrade for that path.
-Maps, there would be maps where you are defending hence more trenches or attacking with a little bit more stars but less trenches.
-To encourage tank use, some maps would have a massive open area in the middle, favoring the defending forces but if you have a tank then it would soak damage and your infantry will be able to take ground.
-Here's some tank types, An Assualt gun(St. Chamond) big gun in the front for anti structure, slow firing, no machine gun. Medium tank(Mk.V) medium hp, a cannon and a machine gun, medium speed. Heavy tank(Char2c) a lot of hp, expensive, weaker cannon, two machine guns, slower than the assualt gun.
-All tanks will have a speed penalty when crossing trenches, and raining.
-All tanks will have decreased attack range when raining and fog.
-All tanks will only be unlocked in certain missions and locked behind a tech tree.
Thats all for my TED talk.

This might be a really difficult feature to implement, but I think there should be a pvp campaign similar to contested territory in btd6. A player can pick a side (Germans or French) and then they both start at the capital and push towards the other. Progress towards the capital can be made by capturing trenches along a line, and along the line can be reinforcement cities that the troops spawn from. First team to reach the opponents capital wins

I love the research tree idea. I was thinking that maybe the tanks and artillery items that can be unlocked on the right side of the screen would be instead be unlocked in the research tree to make it take longer to unlock them instead of unlocking artillery barrage straight away and continuing to barrage them. Also these items could all have their own branches where you can upgrade them in the tree to add even more value to medals. So the tree will allow you to upgrade tanks and artillery

A suggestion would be to make a different type of trench, like a wider one that is uncrossable by tanks unless you spend stars to build a bridge across the trench, as this was a somewhat minor "issue" with tanks during the war,
another way to implement crossing them would be in the research tab to include a tank upgrade that gives tanks a fascine, that would allow crossing of "Anti tank ditches".
The Anti tank trenches could be an upgrade to the normal trenches or a side ability that could be used by the player and ai on their respective side of the trenches.

as for changes to the game, having both faster rates and gas masks is a cool concept, and maybe you could make it a tech tree for each unit, so by right clicking on the rifleman, you can bring up a list of upgrades, like gas masks, cheaper units, and faster spawning rates. and maybe even add bayonets? for in the trench fighting, might be a little too complex though.

About shotgunners: shotguns were called trench guns for a reason, so I fully support the idea of them pushing inside enemy trenches while attacking. This can make them attack slower (since they have to travel a bit more), but you can make it so they will be immune to the stationary machine gun fire, while in allied trenches.
I also think that you can make branching upgrades for the trenches, so you can choose what you want to upgrade (like with machine guns right now). A couple examples: dugouts for troops to hide from artillery (AKA take less casualties from barrage), Sandbags against gunshots, barbed wire, which would slow people coming into and out of the trench.

An easy improvement is to simply expand on the tech tree, but I would like to see some of the research have requirements before you can upgrade them. So like before you can get tier 2 riflemen cooldown you would have to purchase a certain number of riflemen during that battle, or if you wanted to upgrade your tanks, you would have had to use at least 1 tank before during that battle.

After watching a couple of these, I'd have to suggest when you or the enemy capture a trench that contains a machine gun turret, as long as the turret is not destroyed in the attack, it should be moved to the winning side instead after a wait time, which saves some money and lets the winner use the enemy's weapon against them. Snipe their turret gunner and capture their weapons for yourself, or abandon your trenches and be forced to face down the wrong side of the barrel you paid for.
Edit : Also, pushing a trench while the enemy is currently capturing a turret could force a temporary stop to the timer, or perhaps at least slowing it significantly. Winning the fight reverses the timer from where it was and would put the turret back where it was before the enemy started capturing it.

Hey Baron. I wanted to leave another suggestion, this time to counter mechanical vehicles (useful if you do ever implement the AI Personality system). During WW1, most of the soldiers had to practically pray they didn't send over tanks because there was no way of stopping them, not until technology and strategy had evolved. To counter these 'land cruisers', the Germans would have created larger caliber guns, such as the Mauser 1918 T-Gewehr, that could penetrate the thin armor, similarly, anti-tank trenches were devised with Sappers or Engineers (something you implement to open up a construction system) digging large, deep trenches to get the tanks stuck. Of course, this meant that bridges strong enough to hold the tanks would have been needed or they would have to go around. Keep up the good work and keep pumping out this great content!

    SUGGESTIONS:
Soldiers should be able to go prone when asked to rush against a mg upgraded trench and have a 60% chance of dodging the mg fires. Proning should only work at fog or night time.
Optionally, AA(anti -air) units can be added to lessen the projectiles dropping from aircrafts as some of the aircrafts will be shot down, some won’t.
When fog sets in. The enemies won’t be able to see ppl moving, will only see em when they are at a certain range from the trench.
Soldiers also can choose to push forward while being provided cover by tanks.
Bridges should be added, so tanks can go across a trench. This should only work in fog of war or night time.
Optionally, a unit “engineer/builder” can be made for this, they can also be made to be a requirement for an mg to be settled in a trench.
Artillery that hits the space between trenches can create holes, which can be used as cover from gun fire.

With the tactics side of thing I mean more like the Troops with behave differently, so Riflemen will go prone when in range out in the open to increase defense but they will have a slightly lower RoF,
meanwhile Shotgunners can have a tactic unlocked that trains them to really close the gap on the enemy to capitalize on close-range but it means they need to get closer compared to a untrained shotgunner to engage. With the final shotgunner tactic being actually getting into a occupied trench to fight in it.
Plus maybe stuff like Trench Upgrades like the Zig-Zag design and adding in Trench Connections plus building Board-walks atop trenches to allow infantry to cross them faster when moving up to a frontline trench?

    Some suggestions:
You could add the Arditi; they were Italian knife-fighting soldiers during World War I. They could be a fast, cheap unit that rush into the trenches and kill soldiers up close rather than standing outside and shooting from a distance like other soldiers. Probably should do less damage to tanks and bases though since all they have is a knife.
Also, maybe add the ability to add barbed wire in the battlefield, or make it an environmental thing. It could be used to slow down enemy troops, with a small chance of killing soldiers that run through it. They would be able to harm your soldiers as well, but they could be able to be destroyed by artillery or by being run over by tanks.
For soldiers idling and not actively doing anything, you could have them do something like sitting down and playing cards, writing letters, or eating. It won't actually have any effects though.

I think that the fog should not only affect accuracy but also the range that troops engage. Think about it, thick fog makes it to where you can only see like 5 ft in front of you. So maybe it could reduce engagement range by 30% makeing for a lot of chaotic close quarters battles. Another feature they may go well with this if if you could add a bayonet charge feature. Units would rush the trench and go into melee combat with bayonets, clubs, knives, and their bare hands. Obviously you would take a lot of attrition to get there but if you are in the trench with the greater numbers you win (if you can manage that with a machine gun firing at you)

If you deside to make a weather that is insanely windy it has a chance to shift the bullets direction and either hit a different troop, or miss and if you shoot the artillery barrage onto land it makes a crator and shapes the land so it slows down troops when walking in the crator, and also add a new map with no trenches so you can build your own custom trenches and probably make it wider so you have more space to make trenches, and also place down anti tank guns, like. a sort of ai box that locks onto tanks, and also make it so that you need resourses to upgrade the trenches and it takes time to finish that trenches upgrade.

Fortunately, coding it in i think is pretty easy, it just requires duplicating the unit list, putting in a statement to say "brits build units from this list, germans from this list", then updating each of the individual units with the new art and whatever stat changes. Or having one unit list, and just having a statement for "brits get this artwork, germans get this artwork".

I just want to preface this by saying that I am a big fan of Baron and his content, and I love the idea of this game.
There should be a small tech/upgrade tree for each unit, with upgrades like 10-20% increased accuracy, increased speed, and decreased deploy time being available 2-3 times for each unit, costing more medals each time, and 1-2 unique upgrades for each unit.
Riflemen could get the unique upgrade of bayonet charges, where they have a significant chance (altered by the level of the trench defenses) to jump into the enemy trenches into the midst of the enemy units and gain a bayonet attack that replaces their shooting if there is an enemy in melee range. This attack is much less likely to miss than the rifle shot.
Shotgunners could have a similar upgrade, but they will only jump into the trench if there is a spot clear of enemy units. They will actively clear an area to land if the 40-60% chance proves successful, and when entering a trench have a very powerful attack.
Machine gunners might have the ability to go prone behind the attacking riflemen, shotgunners etc. and reduce their chances of being targeted. Another ability could be to (every 5-15 seconds while defending) fire back and forth across the battlefield. This attack won't hit anyone, but temporarily reduce the accuracy of many of the enemy units.
Officers could provide a free artillery barrage if they are kept alive for a certain amount of time, or they could have an increased gas mask range.
Snipers could have a similar ability to machine gunners to go prone while on the attack. They could also actively target more valuable units, starting from sniper, then officer, then machine gunners, then shotgunners, then riflemen. They would avoid shooting tanks, as their accuracy is more valuable elsewhere.
Tanks could have increased armor, and allow certain units to hide behind them while attacking, giving them protection like a trench would.

I feel like for the issue with medal crates vs star crates a solution could be having a exchange for both currency.
Having stars be exchange for medals (for a high price) and lower the value of stars gain from medal exchange to star could have the player think harder for which crate to get from level up.
Get stars for more units to hold or push the enemy vs getting medals to upgrade and use your strikes.
Also after unlocking everything maybe have a use for medals with using them to give temporary boost to all units or limited boost to new units.
You could have a moral boost that effect all units making them move and attack faster or getting better equipments so the next few units are stronger than normal like better scopes allowing a certain number of newly spawn snipers have farther range than normal snipers. These boost would be minor but give medals a purpose other than be exchanged for stars after unlocking everything
This could have a new unit that must be unlocked from the skill tree being a signaler which will permanently stay at your base and allows you to buy the different temporary or limit boosts.
Since I’m no game dev I have no idea what issue or amount of work these suggestions may bring but either way I like to see where this game go.

you should add a "fog of war" so u can't see all the way back, u could do this by creating a fog, or making the (not visible) area grey. The sniper would increase the range.
this way you have to prepare for tanks and can not snipe them with an artillery. and you would obviously not see the enemy units and the machineguns. (the idea is, that the player would have to prepare more...)

Suggestion: You should make it so that when you order units, they'll have radios to know when to get back. With radios, you could make it so that weather can tamper with the orders in the radios and can make some troops possibly ignore the response and keep doing the previous order. There should also be radio ranking from 0-5, o being unable to understand the radio at all, 5 being cannot be disrupted and will always follow orders no matter what, for example: Officers would have a radio ranking of 5 and tanks would have a radio ranking of 0. This suggestion would 100% change the game. (Here's an extra suggestion: Officers will be able to to perform specific actions like order certain units to go retreat or advance. Without an officer, you cannot do tactical retreats and all would retreat or advance. The officers will also be able to give the riflemen a radio ranking of 1-2, Making the riflemen be able to listen to the orders you give more clearly.) I hope this suggestion helped!

You should add a rocket launcher unit for around 3 or 4 medals to unlock that could work like the tank against trenches and has a chance to one shot a tank. Great game by the way keep up the good work!! 👍

Something I think would be cool would be a trench fighter. Weak to tanks and machine guns and just range, but if they get into the trench, they reach havoc in close quarters.

You should add flamethrower units that are good for capturing other trenches but are only good at close range, and have a little bit more health than the average rifle man

To address the economy issue you could have the tech tree in the main menu and earn the medal after the battle and use those to unlock different units then have it so you select your team from your unlocked units and special weapons

    SUGGESTION:
    1. A two percent chance (Or some other low value) that when soldiers with no gas masks are gassed they survive and automatically make a counterattack

Suggestion: Make a campaign, I know that you are probably told this a lot but I really think it would be a good idea, a good example is Stick War: Legacy where the campaign also teaches the players the ropes of the game. I also think adding some historic maps as well as other countries units so there is a larger amount of customisation in terms of the battles people fight, a good example of this would be the Australians Vs. the Turks in Gallipoli. Great game so far and I hope to see more amazing developement.

    Suggestions:
Paratroopers could be a new ability, several riflemen drop on an enemy trench or no man’s land and can help take the trench and then join your army.
You can also add landmines as a part of the tech tree, they can only be placed in no man’s land and can take out enemy troops as the cross between trenches, additionally add a way to clear land mines.
There can be more units at the start of the game you still only have riflemen unlocked, but you can then choose what other units you want to unlock, up to 5 total also it can be the same thing with abilities.
Bayonet upgrade for riflemen that gives you ability to charge with.
Flamethrower unit, good for crowd control, strong in trenches and weak if there is wind.
Maybe a map making mode too where you can choose the trench layout and possibly make it bigger than the normal map size.
Grenade unit, pretty self explanatory it really just throws grenades or make it possible for offices to get a grenade upgrade in the tech tree.

Ideas: maybe add boss fights each 10 maps and also get a plane that drops of reinforcements

You should add airtroops (can only be used when you only have one trench left and the other trenches have been captured) you have to choose a trench where to drop them

whenever a tank is crossing a trench it should have a big chance of getting stuck (it will still shoot but it won't be able to move) and you have to build a bridge (two planks) so tanks can cross the trench safely also barb wire that can be destroyed by tanks or slowly be cut by infantry

I tried your demo and I quite like it. I think that you should make like a mobile turret to attack with or maybe an anti-armor units that are useful against tanks. You could also make it so that tanks can wait at certain places instead of just going forward. Another idea I just had is a story type thing, like levels instead of just a sandbox. It would make it more realistic sounding if you added some gunfire and explosions in the distance. I think that the medals arn't very important later in the game, except to get extra money and snipers, so you should be able to upgrade specific units with your medals. That would make medals more useful.

Suggestion artillery has a 40-50% chance to leave a crater if fired outside of trench which will provide cover for infantry outside of trenches if they are attacking another trench it will also snowdown tanks
