I cried through much of this just completely overwhelmed with nostalgia.
Now the years are rolling by me
    They are rockin' evenly
I am older than I once was
And younger than I'll be; that's not unusual
    Nor is it strange
    After changes upon changes
We are more or less the same
After changes we are more or less the same

As is well known, Paul and Art were barely on speaking terms at this point, but they still had great respect for each other as men and as artists. They also had great respect for their fans, and they knew how much it would mean to their fans if they did this. So they buried the hatchet for a night and gave one of the greatest live performances in music history. Thankfully this video will live on for future generations to enjoy their greatness.

It was one of the best days of my life. I was in college and went with my sister, her BF, and my roommate. I saw so many people that I knew; it was weird. I saw people I grew up with in NJ. We got there really early but, not knowing how many people would show, didn't sit that close to the stage. We are still in the video, though. Amazing concert. I later met S&G after a different show (I knew someone whose dad was their lawyer). Garfunkel is not tall; he's just tall in comparison to Paul Simon.

Not that I want to compare her to S&G in any way 😜. 70.000 people in the stadion, 70.000 on the hill behind in the Olympia Park. All peaceful, calm, happy! I went to a festival style concert of a hip hop artist few weeks ago in a mid sized town, 30.000 people of literally all ages swinging and singing in the evening summer sun.
Just to say: there is still hope for humanity, and music still unites the masses!

I remember Paul Simon coming to Grimsby (a little Town in Lincolnshire England) in the mid 60s and playing at the Folk Club.. He was so good and a really nice guy... He stayed at my friends flat that night and sang us some songs that later became so well known.... Also smoked my last cigarette and talked all night about so many topics of the day... They were magic days and unforgetable...

  • @PotPoet

I am in my seventies. I remember a good friend who was raving after he returned from attending this event. He was excited that it was a great show and he was especially enthusiastic to tell me that New York had legalized pot. He insisted. "I was there. I saw the mayor (Ed Koch) there and he introduced them. Later Paul Simon told us how the people selling loose joints were paying money to the city." As it turned out, he had enjoyed a temporary truce, not real legalization. We were ahead of our time. Note how there was no trouble in that whole massive crowd of people all so close together. You can thank cannabis for that.

I got to drive a truck with set pieces to Philadelphia to pick up the last materials and take them to Central Park that morning. The Stage Manager offered for me to stay for the concert but that would have meant about an 8 hour wait and I'd been working/travelling for a couple of days so I said no, thanks though I love S&G. I've always a little bit regretted that I didn't find a way to stay for this, but I helped build and deliver their set, so there's that!

Paul was a brilliant song writer with the Soul of a poet ♥
Art had the voice of an Angel ♥
Once upon a time they were the closest of friends - and they were always better together than they were apart
    - There are always two sides to every story , and playing the blame game is never wise , so I will simply say this : no matter who said or did whatever , it's in the past now ; it no longer exists - so , Paul , Art , let it go - let it go ; get together , shake hands , share a cup of coffee and be friends again
    - "A friend may well be reckoned the masterpiece of nature"
    Ralph Waldo Emerson .
    - "Think where Man's glory most begins and ends ,
And say my glory is I had such a friend"
    William Butler Yeats .

It is true that there were more than 500,000 people enjoying it, without disturbances, all with respect for the artists and each other.
What a thrill, at 66 years of age, I didn't expect such a wonderful gift.

How important is "The Boxer" to the american songbook. And here is maybe the finest rendition of the song, even with the false start, that has ever been recorded.
Simple and straight forward acoustic arrangement, without the unnecessary orchestration of the album version and also including the "missing" verse. "The Boxer" as one song, just about captures all of Simon & Garfunkel's prominent themes.

I guess I’m getting old, but I was kid when this dropped and my sister and I would play the hell out of the songs, and today it just makes me wonder… what happened to music? Kind like watching Breaking Bad, The Wire, Sopranos etc. and thinking what happened to TV? Or like pondering on past films and wondering what happened to movies? We know the answer of course, good stories, writing and capable casts no longer was the objective. Same with music, it’s so processed and electronic today that even if absent melodies it lacks authenticity and originality. Things present in every S&G song. “The words of the prophets are written on subway walls in tenement halls.”

My cousin Brandon passed away this past Sunday (Sept 4th, 2022), he was 48. When we were kids we would go over to his house (my sister's and me, and my mother) and we would go swimming, would barbeque, and hang out as a family with his brother and my oldest cousin Brian, aunt Sonja, and my uncle Rodger. And in the faint memories I remember a peace and happiness, and music would always be playing. 38:13 - Simon and Garfunkel, Slip sliding away rings as clear today as it did 43 years ago. Unforgettable memories! When I was a kid, my cousin and I were sometimes listening to that concert in central Park because his sister had got the vinyl LP of it... At this time, I was learning to speak English but I was not able to understand all their lyrics, because they're full of poetry. Still it remains not so easy for me to get everything, but can you realize, that even without understanding everything, I already was enjoying their songs, cause their music is so great... And now, after all these years, I really do appreciate improving my English level, by listening to them and trying to understand all the messages they sent to us at this time! This concert was undoubtedly one of the best given in all times, among some others like Woodstock or some of Whitney Houston. It was THE PLACE TO BE, that day!!! And even if I confess I don't like Simon so much, because he doesn't smile, always seems sad (even if he might have some good reason for it, with his love stories...), I find him brilliant and astounding with his guitar, every note is played so sharply that it seems to be easy, that's crazy! He is an extraordinary musician! And Arthur was able to bring something more, something emotional, his presence is remarkable. It is not like feeling love, because we know Art and Paul, were a little bit in conflict, maybe a rivality. However they were able to stop time that day and it is a strange feeling we can never forget!
