Want to see the breakdown between the 3DO version of Gex vs. PlayStation and Saturn? What about the Nintendo 64 vs. PlayStation battle over Enter the Gecko? We’re featuring even more magazines and scores over at the Defunct Games website: www.defunctgames.com/reviewcrew/168/limited-run-gex-trilogy-tomba
Not going to lie, I owned 3DO Gex, and while I enjoyed it well enough, I think part of it was trying to boost anything I could to justify my $700 purchase of the 3DO itself!
@@Bean-525it was pretty impressive until Nintendo released Donkey Kong Country that looked on par on a system a generation behind. I played it since on PlayStation. It’s not a bad game at all though. It’s an above average platformer with a very 90s vibe. And like the 16bit platformers, it’s 2D nature made this thing age a lot better over time. I think you could justify the 3DO’s high price. It was a similar jump the PC engine made a generation earlier, and it rivalled early PS1 Saturn games 2 years earlier. If you compare it to a Neo Geo, the games were more varied and more impressive. It played heavy hitting PC games like Wing Commander 3 at a lot lower price point than a PC needed to be to run that game. People give it too much of a hard time.
@@sloppynyusziabsolutely, games like Need For Speed, Road Rash and Wing Commander 3 were awesome on 3DO. Even FIFA and Madden were super impressive for the time. Plus is had the best home conversion of Super Street Fighter II Turbo (just don’t mention the controller 😂)
gex: enter the gecko brings back memories because my friend and i rented it back in like 98.. it exceeded our expectations.. we were cracking up laughing at gex's one-liners "slip of the tongue, baby" (austin powers voice)... he had a ton of funny lines and the game was really fun.. eventually my friend purchased the game.. this friend of mine overdosed and passed away this past november.. but i still have memories of us playing ps1 and dreamcast!!!!
I was born in 91 and an vet familiar with these games, tomba and gex 1 were the first side scroller besides mario I played and really remember enjoying. Gex 2 and 3 will definitely seem dated because of an the jokes that were very 90s but I played a lot of gex. These games are highly recommended in my opinion
Gex 3 was like my broke ass SM64 as a kid. Such an insane amount of nostalgia for it. Tomba is such an underrated series as well, glad that interest in both series is rekindled. Really cool to see all of these archival scans in one piece of media, saves a lot of time on archive. Keep it up, bro!
Cant wait to play Gex and Tomba again 😁 I hope their not gonna be limited numbers of the game available worldwide as its do with the company limited run games.
Gex was very enjoyable in my first days owning a Playstation. Not so much this days, sadly. The re release of Tomba on the other hand got me excited. That's a pretty good game that deserves a second chance.
LRG's recent announcements blew me away, especially Tomba coming back! I've never actually played a Gex game before, though I am very aware of the series. And for the QotD, yes, I will very much be getting Tomba likely for both Switch and PS4 as soon as it's available xD
I really appreciate the amount of detail you go into describing everything. You my fine sir have earned a sub Edit: Yup I’ll be purchasing both call me a nostalgic 90s kid but I absolutely loved all of these games as a kid
I'm looking forward to both games! I grew up playing Gex that made some of my best childhood memories gaming. I always wanted to play Tomba because I played the demo when I was a kid and so will be playing that!
Great video as always! QOTD - I'm actually way more interested in that re-release of Karateka. It was one of the first games I ever played on our family Apple II+. I can't wait to see how that turns out.
The thing with the first gex is nobody said it was so short and apparently nobody passed the first level on those reviews ... I mean, I read magazines with only graveyard level ... Too hard? Too dull? Too annoyed with the Deadpool voice? XD
If you Do LRG/ Carbon Engine's gameboy games here's some (possible) useful information: Shantae may have reviews somewhere, I know you limit yourself to magazine reviews but IGN definitely covered Shantae because series creator Matt Bozon's Brother Mark Bozon worked at IGN, Tripp World got a Pal release so European game magazines are a good source. LJN's Bill and Ted is probably the easiest to find reviews for.
@DefunctGames Ah my bad about the bill and ted, same still applies to what I said for Shantae and Trip World (IGN also covered the original Shantae Advance tech demo aswell!)
I cannot wait for these to come out. I missed Tomba! as a kid so this is my chance to finally play it. I will probably give the Gex games a run to lmao.
These releases are really neat. I’ve recently been playing Tomba and Tomba 2 on the PS Vita(it lives) I hope we get both games. Since we are getting all 3 Gex games. Which are also fun. Not sure how those will age though, With it’s humour.
QOTD: quite possibly both! I remember renting tomba and found it was kinda neat. and GEX I fondly remember back on 3DO. never got around to the later sequels so may have to see how they played. Obviously not expecting the next Mario 64, but would be fun to see what they were about.
GEX is a must have. I own it and found all hidden levels and tomba 1 and 2 I have digital on PS3 And a physical copy for PS1 TH A T I BOUGHT FOR $20.00 YES I SAID $20.00
You should go and ready the comments under my Phantasy Star Hint Book video, where 90% of the people are like "Game journalists have always been terrible."
They are still listed as "Release: TBA," so it probably won't be this year. I have to imagine that it will be early-ish 2024, but don't quote me on that. It's a shame they didn't announce a release date when they announced the games.
I wonder why they're not bringing Tomba 2? I'm just hoping these games have trophies. But since they aren't first party, I'm guessing they won't. I never played any of these games because when they released I was like 20 and thought they were too childish for my 'mature' tastes. Ha.
I can't think of a single third-party game released on the PlayStation 4 or 5 that doesn't have trophies, so I would be shocked if Tomba didn't have them.
@DefunctGames Third-party or first party? All of the first party games have them, but not third. Resident Evil and Ridge Racer are probably the most notable third-party without trophies.
Oooh ... you're talking about the emulated PS1 games? Sorry, I was treating this as a new release (not one of the PS+ Premium PS1 Classics). I understand the confusion. I'm pretty sure this is not going to be one of those PS+ Premium releases, but rather a "new" port. So I would almost guarantee that it has trophies (just like Limited Run's Bill and Ted compilation from a few months ago). Also, Sony published the game originally, but will be published by Limited Run Games this time around.
Deep Cover Gecko fixed the camera issues in Enter the Gecko. These critics were way too harsh on the best game in the series, but a lot of these critics back then were tired of games “doing the same thing over and over again.” Deep cover Gecko introduced new characters to the series too, but you could only play as them in the bonus stages. I hope we’ll get a fourth game one day that allows us to play as Cuz, Rex, and Alfred. I’m super hyped for the trilogy! So much that I made a fan forum lol.
So yeah… if gex is using the same graphics, then it’s doomed to fail. It needs the love that crash and Spyro got. As far as I’m concerned undercover gecko is a hot mess and frankly appalling to look at.
I’ll be getting both Tomba and the Gex Trilogy. Really, out of Gex, all I’m interested in is the original, but I want to own both of these classics. Maybe there will be an Earthworm Jim Remaster collection..? They did remaster it for Xbox 360. I’d love to have a physical copy.
QOTD; I might consider getting both, depending on the platforms they're available on. LRG has been a bit hit-and-miss lately on the platform availability. From the stuff announced I'm most hyped for the Castlevania Advanced Collection and Rise of the Triad.
Me and my brother played the Gex trilogy together a few years ago and whilst they might never have been outstanding and the humour hasn't aged perfectly either, I still think there is enough charm there to warrant a purchase.
When they announced GEX revival I decided to get the Saturn port for the first GEX game! I don’t know why but I love playing games on the Saturn but MAN are they not cheap! (Looking at you panzer dragoon!) But if you’re lucky and waited patiently then you could get a fairly decent price of $50 for some of these!
Instead of titleing these videos with just limited run games name wouldn't it be better to call it "Carbon Engine review crew"? And just include the LRG logo in the thumbnails?
I don't see an issue. I'll take it. I'd rather buy tomba on newer systems physically , then have to buy it for ps1 at those prices. I hope they keep bringing more and more. , and why not everyone wins
That's a fair point. I used Limited Run in the title because I felt like more people were going to search for that name over Carbon Engine, but maybe that's not the case. Either way, I decided to use both, so the title now reads "Limited Run/Carbon Engine."
@DefunctGames nice, helps for when people look up videos trying to find out what the engine is capable of since LRG made it a spotlight of thier recent showcase so it's good to do ^^
I'm not all that familiar with Tomba, but I remember playing the Gex games on dad's old PS1, and enjoying those. As for the question though, saw it's coming on Steam, may think about it, depending on the price on Steam.

note to self: Dont drink tap water at Jerry Garcia's

"Hey, you're harshing my mellow."

Tomba is fantastic, though I'm not the biggest fan of the controls. I thought the sequel was severely underrated.
Agreed. Also I love Tomba 2, I hope it gets a release too.

@RichyJAdventures I still have my PS3 hooked up to my main TV, I am very tempted to buy the PSone versions that are available digitally on there
Yep, get is more Deadpool than the actual Deadpool...
And for Tomball, my mother enjoyed playing back in the day ..
It's interesting that some of the reviewers compared Gex and Tomb Raider, considering Crystal Dynamics would go on to develop Tomb Raider games.
I really appreciate the amount of detail you go into describing everything. You my fine sir have earned a sub
Edit: Yup I’ll be purchasing both call me a nostalgic 90s kid but I absolutely loved all of these games as a kid
That EGM cover at 6:01 is still my favorite
I'm looking forward to both games! I grew up playing Gex that made some of my best childhood memories gaming. I always wanted to play Tomba because I played the demo when I was a kid and so will be playing that!
Always love your content. This video was much appreciated!!
All this technology still can't explain why David Hasselhoff is so popular
-Gex
I bet some of Dana's one-liners have aged like milk in the last thirty years.
Hopefully theyll do the original Bubsy quadrilogy too.
Great video as always! QOTD - I'm actually way more interested in that re-release of Karateka. It was one of the first games I ever played on our family Apple II+. I can't wait to see how that turns out.
That Karateka release looks AMAZING!!!
I can’t wait for ultimate gex night
The thing with the first gex is nobody said it was so short and apparently nobody passed the first level on those reviews ... I mean, I read magazines with only graveyard level ...

We actually covered the Bill & Ted compilation back when it was first announced. Check out the video here: ruclips.net/video/Tph1Xtyi9Tc/видео.html

quick answer yes they are sooooo worth getting today
wait wait so....remasteres with visuals and widescreen or just straight up ports?
What's with these commercials where Gex is just a creepy stalker?
I kind of like the one that is the Scream parody.
yea i will if i could buy it at best buy or amazon
Great video.👍
3D GRAPHICS!
I am more interested in Gex Trilogy myself.
Man back then game journalist took their job seriously. Today game journalism is a joke they don't even know how to play
You should go and ready the comments under my Phantasy Star Hint Book video, where 90% of the people are like "Game journalists have always been terrible."
Any release date news yet?

@DefunctGames Oh, dang. Then that is even more confusing that Tomba 2 isn't included.
A diaper, a Headdress, and I’m good to go!

This is a very unpopular opinion these days but I think Gex is absolutely hilarious, I still play Gex 2 a lot. Great turn your brain off kinda game

Rise of the Triad, hell yeah
To be fair, the N64 version of Enter the Gecko was lacking content from what I’ve been told. It has reason to be rated lower
I really wish to get hyped. But i just know, i better don't. Too much disappointments last 15 years.
Me and my brother played the Gex trilogy together a few years ago and whilst they might never have been outstanding and the humour hasn't aged perfectly either, I still think there is enough charm there to warrant a purchase.
I can’t wait for the Gex Trilogy. I might get Tomba.
Is the girl on the cover of "Deep Cover Gecko" the same as the one in the "Enter the Gecko" commercial?
It does look like her.
When they announced GEX revival I decided to get the Saturn port for the first GEX game!
I don’t know why but I love playing games on the Saturn but MAN are they not cheap!

@superbros64deluxe my bad then, guess the internet has gotten me used to people being sarcastic and condescending lol. Apologies.

I played Gex enter the Gecko on the Gameboy Color. That was a fun and at the time a very difficult game.
