Thank you so much for this! I have a three year old rescue Rotty with a prong collar on as I’m 81 so it would give me more control. Now, watching you, I realize he’s been walking me, stopping to sniff, pee and such and I wasn’t handling the leash correctly. This is a lifesaver. When I walk him tomorrow will follow what you’ve been doing.
Finally a training video with a big dog! My 10 month old newf does that to me and he’s over 140(I’m a 120 lb female)I just purchased a prong collar. I left my vet in tears today unable to simply weigh him because he was sniffing everything in the office. I’ve feared using this collar without training but I’m unable to control him. Btw I’ve done all the positive training 😖I’ve also used no pull harness, flat collar and martingale collars. Nothing helps!!
I have recently put both dogs on prong collars and what a game changer. About two weeks ago, we were coming out of the training yard, when the dogs caught sight of something that triggered their prey drive, I never saw what it was. I had both leashes in one hand and as they instantly hit a 0 - 60 prey drive, they've done this before, but I was ready for it by staying vigilant. I was jerked forward and onto the ground, the dogs immediately stopped and focused on me like I've trained them to do. By day two I was feeling it, I had what felt like whiplash, my knees/elbows were scuffed up and my usual chronic pain was off the charts. For safety reasons, I felt it necessary and long overdue, when walking two dogs at one time, it's hard to watch for prey drive triggers, cars and manage ecollar corrections. Ecollars will still be used for their one-on-one training sessions. I love how the prong collar correction is immediate and, in some instances, automatically applied like when lunging at cars, a firm leash pop means a hell of allot more as well. It's sad that electronic and prong collars are two of the most misunderstood but highly effective training tools.
Glad you’re liking them and it’s working for you. Pretty drive is generally better addressed in more controlled off leash scenarios (in a fenced area or on a long line) with the ecollar. You can stop it there so that on your walk they already know they can’t do it.
Using the ecollar and or just a verbal recall I could correct loading or call them off a squirrel, a cat running through a yard across the street or people walking their dog along the fence, they were great in the training yard on/off leash and long line, the issue was on walks when (without loading, that's why I missed it) something would set off their prey drive, usually at night a few times during the day, a cat, a pattern resembling a cat, and birds like the peacocks/crows and without a hint take off after it, I never knew when this was going to happen. The last straw was the accident, I can't risk getting hurt, it could be worse next time. @@MiracleK9Training
I think you've misunderstood me, there are no signs when this happens, it's instant. If there was loading, I would have corrected it with the ecollar. Prong collars allow me to give an instant correction to both dogs when they load, if they go off on something without loading and I miss it, the prong collar instantly makes that action uncomfortable. @@MiracleK9Training

I have got a very headstrong Old Tyme bulldog. I got her a Herm prong ...can you tell me how for her to wear it though? She has got big wobbly chops and neck rolls. Thank you
High on the neck above all of that. No different than any other dog. Just be careful when using it and pay attention to their breathing if you’re needing to use a lot of pressure.

My dog does his poo during our morning walk, you said your dog had gone toilet before the walk. If I cannot get him to do his poo before the walk, I would be correcting him when he needs to go toilet. How would I treat this?
You could either let him go right before the walk or start your heeling then when you think he needs to go give him an “ok” release and walk him off into the grass to go.
Just a quick question.....With a dog this big and powerful why no back up collar with the prong?....I've had mine come loose once or twice and have a lead the same as yours except it has 2 ends...one for the prong one for the back up
Personally I’ve only ever seen the smaller 2.25 prongs come undone or the ones with the quick release buckle which this does not have. I typically always use a back up with those ones but not with these larger hermspringer prongs.
You just have to preemptively have a good idea of when the dog typically needs to go and just let them know OK and walk them into the grass spot you need them to go in.
when i’m walking with him i hold him close to my left and when i give home more leash and allow him to be about 2 or 3 feet in front of me he knows it’s ok to use the restroom

He is reactive on the leash but l find the slip collar works well if placed high on the neck and is a good quality slip collar .
You would be 100% correct if we were using it as a training tool. We just had it on him to transport him to where we were going to be working him and used a prong at that point.

I would use a head collar like Halti. It doesn't hurt your dog like prong collars. There are reasons they are forbidden at other countries (like germany where I live). My dog, german shepherd x St. Bernard (9 months) really has power like a horse and pulls hard, but with the Halti it's fine.
@@Cornsnake94 Head collars aka haltis are way more dangerous than a prong collar. Prong collars are designed to distribute as much even pressure as possible. The worst a good quality and well fitted prong collar can do is cause sores (even then, to get them you need to be a real brute about it). And a halti can break your dog’s neck if they pull on it hard enough. Something being banned doesn’t mean it’s bad, some countries ban people from holding hands in public.
Very nice work sir.I subscribed right away.If I may ask a question..What size of prong collar would you use on strong,8 month boxer puppy? 2.25 or 3mm Herm Sprenger? I'm not sure about the size as he is growing fast and getting stronger every day.He pulls a lot.Thank you, Cheers
@@MiracleK9Training Thank you.One more question please.I noticed some dog trainers connect leash to dead ring on the top of dog neck and some other on the right side of dog neck.Is there a reason for that..does it really matter? Thank you,
@@gavricrs207 not really. I typically just fit it high in the neck and use the standard ring. Some competitive trainers will use the prong in a different manner and use the dead ring for that.
We have a 13 pound, 2 (ish) year old dog and we bought a micro prong collar for him. Do you think they are as effective as the small Herm Sprenger collar. That company doesn't make a micro collar as far as I can tell. Ours is a Kimberland.
I’m not personally a fan of the micros. If I’m dealing with a very small dog I just use a size 2.25mm and take most of the links out and it’s usually fine.
Question: should a prong collar be evenly on both sides or can it be lob sided? When I put the prong collar on my dog it’s sometimes has to be lob sided just to fit it snugly
I always see comments about people having no luck with a martingale and it baffles me. They do get sold as training collars but as far as I'm concerned thw only appropriate use for a martingale is for dogs who can slip out of a normal collar 🤷♂️ My lab pup has a martingale that I only got her to hang her ttag on, I just liked the collar. If I'm taking her out quickly to per or whatever sometimes I just attach the leash to that rather that put another collar on, but she pulls SOOOOO bad with it on. She pulls in a flat collar, usually I just a prong, but walking her with a martingale is HARDER than with a standard flat collar :/
Great video! I have a Pitbull that is just over 1 year old. I’ve done a lot of research and have been attempting to train with the prong collar, but my dog does not react to my corrections. I’ve tried reducing distractions in the environment by practicing in the backyard but I have the same problem there, he will usually want to always pull ahead and sniff things. I make sure he is properly exercised before training and have tried to use high value treats to encourage him but I’m at a standstill. In my entirely unprofessional opinion I believe the root problem is that he is too overwhelmed and distracted to react to the corrections but I was hoping you could give your opinion and possibly guidance on what to do.
Jane Doe glad you enjoyed it! The prong collar is not intended for proofing heeling around higher distractions. It’s just used to build some general muscle memory. The next thing you’re going to want to do is our video called introducing the ecollar into the walk pt1
Beautiful dog IV one similar age, size and shape but with the tail and not gonna lie definitely looks better without. I draw the line at ear docking tho although I agree the dobermans look better docked it's just to barbaric to me
Prong collar doesn't work for my dog. He still pulls no matter how bad he's struggling to breath I got a harness for his muzzles but still doesn't work. I got a shock collar and seems to work a bit, I don't put it.on very high usually ten works when he's not overly excited
Some dogs can be terribly insensitive to it. The prong is never intended to finish the walk. That’s why it’s just step one. We use the ecollar to finish the walk. You can watch introducing the ecollar to the walk pt 1 and 2 with major on our RUclips channel to show you how to use that tool the way it’s intended!
This is my one year old rottie right now, he’s good on a walk 80-90% of the time but good lord is he stubborn when he wants something, especially saying hi to my dad or wanting to pee on something. He does well w a gentle leader but the main reason I use it is bc he just kept trying to eat things and after some training he won’t eat stuff but I feel we need to go to the next step that I can’t get w food all the time
@@MiracleK9Training oh he isn’t picking stuff up off the ground anymore, last time he did he got a mouth full of biting ants and now is hesitant to pick anything up even if it’s a treat I drop on accident. His issue now tho is just being stubborn and if he wants to sniff he’ll stop and pull his head back then push his butt back to where he wants to go and if he *really* wants something he pulls like crazy and the gentle leader becomes useless at that point which I how I found your video, I think it’s time for a prong collar😓
I am a very petite female, trying to walk my two Labradors - 55 lbs and 100 lbs who have some serious focus issues. I absolutely cannot walk them by myself. I am considering trying the prong, but Im afraid that I wont use it correctly. I just moved across country for a medical travel position, and currently don't have the $1500 for a dog trainer. The dogs are miserable because they cannot exhaust any energy, and so am I because I feel like a horrible dog parent. I see all by seaside neighbors walking their very well behaved dogs walking along the harborwalk. I would love to be able to take my dogs out like that. The added issue, after watching your video, is that there would be no "releasing the pressure" because my dogs are continuously pulling, similar to being on the back of a dog sled.
Even if you implement the prong “incorrectly” you won’t hurt your dogs. Trust me. These tools are safer than having the dog pull into flat collars constantly. I would recommend starting with this and seeing where you get. You’ll see once you start it how effective they can be. Start one at a time as you introduce the prong.
He associates the collar with something bad. I got my dog use to the collar before we ever used it. I would get it out show it to her and give her treats. Let her wear it for a bit while feeding her and giving treats. When she sees the prong collar now she gets excited because she knows we are going outside and going to have some fun training. You have to go above and beyond to make it fun and rewarding for them.
Doesn`t matter: choke or prong, my Rednose will literally drag you with your legs behind on the ground. I only leave him on the prong so he gets plenty of blood to his brain. The choke chain would probably choke him out. His whole life is based on playing with other dogs. Can I take off those black little rubber caps they put on the ends of each prong? He seems to feel no pain, just like a Pitbull.
Why would you even want to use and e collar here. An aversive is an aversive in my opinion but the e collar does not offer any directional guidance. Why not just stick with the prong. It does the same thing but better?
Really good question. A few reasons. 1.) because of the physical nature of the tool, dogs tend to get used to prong collar sensation very very quickly as they inevitably will feel it a lot of times in scenarios we don’t intend. Once it looses its value it’s hard to get back. 2.) using an ecollar will be much easier for an OWNER to be more dynamic with level wise. Increasing or decreasing intensity on a prong is extremely challenging for a skilled trainer let alone an owner.
@@MiracleK9Training Interesting. I find the e collar to be much more prone to habituation. My dogs wear the e collar everytime they are off leash but it’s basically there for that one time they do something stupid and unpredictable. If I’m teaching something through -R or using punishment I always turn to the prong because it is much more reliable because of its physical aspect. Additionally I like that it is very easy for the dog to tell that the aversive is coming from me. As long as these tools are used correctly I believe an aversive is an aversive and every trainer will have their preferences
Thresholds + walk are two separate skills. I agree there is benifit to working on getting one good before moving on to the other but you can work them simultaneously while doing that.
Why would you not him to pee ? 😂 i have a dobie and he instantly knew what to do very smart puppy of 11months . But now that i know how use the prong collar properly i will start this training thank you guys !

I'm not sure about the size as he is growing fast and getting stronger every day.He pulls a lot.Thank you,
Cheers
I think you would probably be fine with either or. I usually do under 55 pounds or so 2.25 and over 3mm.
@@MiracleK9Training
Thank you very much,

@@MiracleK9Training
Thank you.One more question please.I noticed some dog trainers connect leash to dead ring on the top of dog neck and some other on the right side of dog neck.Is there a reason for that..does it really matter?
Thank you,
@@gavricrs207 not really. I typically just fit it high in the neck and use the standard ring. Some competitive trainers will use the prong in a different manner and use the dead ring for that.
@@MiracleK9Training
Thank you very much sir.
@@MiracleK9Training I appreciate your taking the time to get back to me.
@@tangocharlyjones3466 of course!
Question: should a prong collar be evenly on both sides or can it be lob sided? When I put the prong collar on my dog it’s sometimes has to be lob sided just to fit it snugly
It should be fitted fairly high on the neck. I’d play around with one additional or one less link to find the right fit
Great video
Thank you!
Can you use a prong collar on a chihuahua?!?!
Sure can.
At what age do you recommend usage for a stubborn 5 month older golden retriever? I’ve been using a martingale with no success.
Prong collar starts at about 16 weeks. Ecollar at 6 months.
@@MiracleK9Training hey, thanks for replying. Much appreciated.
I always see comments about people having no luck with a martingale and it baffles me.
They do get sold as training collars but as far as I'm concerned thw only appropriate use for a martingale is for dogs who can slip out of a normal collar 🤷♂️
My lab pup has a martingale that I only got her to hang her ttag on, I just liked the collar.
Oh boy if my newf doesn’t stop with a prong I’m sunk
What happened to the other steps?
April Schrock they are misc posted with multiple different dogs. The next step you’ll wanna do is “conditioning the ecollar with heeling pt1.)
Beautiful 🌈🥰
thanks!
This sounds just like my dog Tank. He is just like this and a Rottie as well.
A lot of these rotties have similar tendencies. Hope this helped!
Do intact dogs pee and mark more?
Sometimes they can. But we see dogs all over the map that will do that behavior.
Beautiful dog IV one similar age, size and shape but with the tail and not gonna lie definitely looks better without. I draw the line at ear docking tho although I agree the dobermans look better docked it's just to barbaric to me
Appreciate it!
He does well w a gentle leader but the main reason I use it is bc he just kept trying to eat things and after some training he won’t eat stuff but I feel we need to go to the next step that I can’t get w food all the time
Get an ecollar. Set it fairly high. Only use it when he picks something up off the ground he shouldn’t. It’ll solve the issue in 1 session.
@@ORGANPARTY the solution above will solve that quickly too
Get him a green collar, and you'll have a real-life version of Chop from GTAV.
😂😂😂😂😂
I literally wrestle with my dog to put the prong collar on 😭😭
This is just the first step. Keep at it and start ecollar training
A couple treats while putting it on will make all the difference, change the dogs perception.
I just ordered one and it gets here tomorrow hopefully she lets me put it on
@@shawnherald9494 you fight with them abit but after a while they get excited when you put it on them.
Until the dog shows you total respect at threshold/doorways, forget about walks.
Thresholds + walk are two separate skills. I agree there is benifit to working on getting one good before moving on to the other but you can work them simultaneously while doing that.
This is exactly what my dogs doing
Hope it helps!
Why would you not him to pee ? 😂 i have a dobie and he instantly knew what to do very smart puppy of 11months . But now that i know how use the prong collar properly i will start this training thank you guys !
You can let them pee before you start this drill.
I'm scared to use a prong on my dog who is so reactive, if she sees a rabbit run by I'm afraid the prong would do serious damage
Keep in mind these tools are designed for dogs. It’s almost impossible for them to create any actual damage. Your dog lunging and feeling the correction is what deters the behavior.
I guess my concern is if she sees a rabbit she will dart out trying to get to it and I'm afraid of her reaching the end of the leash with the prong on
I appreciate your reply btw
@@miguelgutierrez5124 I totally understand. Just keep in mind that’s what what the tool is for.
Faltó ver que se topará algún perro!!
