    Another great video Tomi! You have single handedly helped me more on my turning journey than all other people and sources combined. I hope you never stop because I would be in search of a new mentor lol!

      @tomislavtomasicwoodturning Again, thank you for wealth of knowledge and choosing to share it with us, I don't know if it would've overcome some turning obstacles without your videos, they mean alot.

    You make it look so easy and i know that it is not…..i am not great with the spindle gauge, don’t why, but i prefer the bowl gauge. Great tutorial, learnt a lot. Also my skew has become a lot better since watching you tutorial, i may just tame the devils tool after all, thank you again.

    Best explanation of using a spindle gouge that I’ve ever seen! You have the ability to explain the tools and their uses in a way that anyone can understand ….. definitely helping to flatten our learning curves. Thank you for all the work you put into your videos 🤠🇨🇱

    Another very well explained tutorial video.
    Your explanations are always thorough, clear and precise.
    A great pleasure to learn from someone who is highly skilled and experienced.
    You have definitely made my introduction to wood turning easier over the last few months since I got my first lathe.

    I would take a water filter but a spindle gouge is certainly on my top 10

    Before I started woodturning 20 years ago, I spent 20 or so years before that as a woodcarver. (After all those years of carefully removing all traces of the burr on my tools I had to learn to make them 😊) The flute depth, or ‘sweep’, on a carving gouge is identified by a number. The higher the number, the deeper the sweep or flute. So for example a 7mm wide, deep gouge is called 7/9 or if it’s very deep 7/11. A shallow 10mm wide tool might be 10/5 and so on. It surprised me that although there is a difference in the depth of the sweep or flute of my turning tools, the only reference seems to be a bowl gouge or a spindle gouge. Since these depths don’t appear to be standard (a bowl gouge may have a very deep flute or a more shallow one) is there any way to know other than trial and error which bowl gouge or which spindle gouge does the best job of inside/outside/soft wood/hard wood and so on?
    A lot of mention is made of bevel angle and length and wing shape, but I don’t find reference to tool depth anywhere.

    Hopefully you have some wood to turn on that desert island! 😊
    Great job going through all the spindle gouges sharpening and using! I feel I've seen your favorite gouge getting shorter and shorter. No doubt from all the use!

      Thank you very much, well There should be drift wood😂
      I have been sparing that gouge , I would use it even more but its one of the favourites so trying to keep it alive as long as I can 😅

    My go to tool is now either a 3/8” detail spindle or 1/2 spindle gouge, thanks to you and Richard! I went exclusively to traditional tools for six months to force myself to learn them properly and referred to your videos often to keep me on track! I’m thankful I did because I am quite proficient with them now. The spindle gouge is so versatile and I am finally respectable at sharpening them. That was one of my biggest issues with using them is that I struggled to get proper angles and profiles, even with the wolverine system finding the best angles and profiles is trial and error and in my mind a bit intimidating, but I think I have a good repeatable system now and I can carve up a piece of wood pretty well. It is so satisfying to make shavings with the spindle gouge! Thank you so much for being so informative about the basics first and then also showing how to take it to the highest levels! I still can’t seem to get the hang of back hollowing yet but I’m close! Again thanks to you!! Take care! Scott

    Nice spindle gouge tutorial. I always find it more interesting to see how someone shapes a bevel on annew gouge rather than sharpen an existing bevel.

    I know it wasn't the point of the video, but the detailed views of the cutting you had in this video showed me one of the key things I need to change in my technique for rolling beads. Thank-you, that's really going to make things better.
    On a lighter note, the real question is if you were stuck on a desert island with just a grinder, a spindle gouge and a lathe, why are you spending your time turning instead of trying to get off the island? 😄

      Hi Mark. Maybe nowadays the island is a better place to be 😅. Providing there's wood to turn and of course the essentials of life.😅

    I’m not sure how you would end up on an island with a lathe and something to power it 😂 but I think I would rather have a skew, just because of all the other things I could use it for, like cleaning fish , or sharpening a spear 😅

    Nice video, just picked up a small spindle for detail work. As a question, is there a bowl diameter or a depth when using a round stock spindle that you would consider is too big and really only suitable for a bowl gouge? I'm guessing it will be vibration dependant more than a pure safety reason.

    • @tomislavtomasicwoodturning
      @tomislavtomasicwoodturning  7 месяцев назад

      Good question Chris, For round shaft there is same sort of rule (my rule) and that would be if there is a vibrations then switch to bigger diameter tool, 99% I use bowl gouge for inside beacuse I have different bevels and its stronger tool then spindle gouge.... But using let say 16mm spindle gouge would easily hollow 4-5 inch bowl , with proper bevel on the tip...
      Another reason I usually use spindle gouges on outside is beacuse most of them I have in accute bevel angle that in most cases isn't practical on inside...
      Hope I explain that right 😅

    • @chrissimmoms1550
      @chrissimmoms1550 7 месяцев назад

      I thought something like that would be the case, I think it would be sensible to add this information to your vid as text somewhere, some new people just see bowls as bowls and that larger bowls need larger and or different tools, they just shove the tool in and hope for the best.
