Rouen is of course famous for its many churches (the city of 100 bells) and for being where Joan of Arc (Jean d'Arc) was imprisoned, then later executed by being burned alive at the stake (spoiler!). Rouen is an easy day trip from Paris, only about 1h20min by train, the cost of which ranges from 13-30euros depending on when you buy and what time you're traveling. We took a direct train that left from Saint Lazare station in Paris (Gare St Lazare) and arrived at Rouen Rive Droite.
My name is Jay Swanson - I'm an American writer living in Paris on an artist visa and hoping to make the city of light my home base - at least for the foreseeable future. I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlogged daily for 3+ years, and love pizza a little too much.

FAQ:
How long have you lived in France? On and off for over two years.
What do you miss most about ho- NACHOS
You're always talking about living on some ship. WHAT SHIP? - I made a "Draw My Life" video that explains a lot here: • Draw My Life
Where are you from originally? - Pullman, Washington - a small university/agricultural town near Idaho (and yes, the potatoes are amazing).
What do you film with? - I've made a lot of changes recently, but I try to keep my gear list up to date if you want to see what I use and buy some for yourself: bit.ly/JaysGear...
What do you edit with? - Adobe Premiere - it's pretty much all I've ever used since high school.
Aren't you ever freaked out by leaving your camera behind to film yourself? - Yep. But not too badly - I tend to be careful when I do.
Why are you living in #Paris? - Because I've always wanted to; I feel at home here: • Why I Want to Live in ...
Do you speak French? - Oui. • Un Jour en Francais (E...
Do you make money off RUclips? - Ha, sorta. I wish. It took me over 500 videos to make my first total $100 off adsense. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.
I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? - The easiest and best way to support me is through Patreon, where you can pitch in as little as $1/mo to help me make better videos: / jayswanson
I don't trust this Patreon thing - can I just paypal you? - Here's my ko-fi if that's your thing (and coffee is your game): ko-fi.com/jays...
But I want to send you something tangible! - I do have a wishlist on Amazon, though it's a bit complicated with the international shipping situation. This is the US one: amzn.to/2ykS9Ux

Thanks for watching!
Rouen, where I was lost multiple times and relied on the kindness of a stranger who took me, a strange foreigner, in his car, to locate my hotel and then right back to my car, all with a language barrier. Yes I did see that dragon.
🔥🔥🔥 Glad you had some helpful French experiences =D
Great tour of Rouen - Normandy is such a beautiful and unique region. Makes me want to go back and it’s such an easy trip from Paris. The church was definitely worth the stop. I can see where it makes you think of a dragon with the form and materials. Have you been to Honfleur? It’s another stop worth making with amazing regional architecture, the waterfront, lots of artisan shops, and it’s old church is completely built of wood with some fun little finds inside. One of my favorites! Thanks again for the day trip. It’s nice to escape every once in a while. 👍
totally agree with the Honfleur recommendation
I love Rouen! I've been there a few years ago. The city architecture made me feel like I was in the Medieval Ages. Nice video Jay :)
Team dragon here. Mostly due to the scales and the “pointy bits”. The inside was amazing as well.
Very round and flat. The priest can't be neither in front of the church-goers nor above them. Clearly an influence of Vatican-II ideology of the 60s
My wife and I spent our last night in France in Rouen two years ago. Very cool place to visit.
Tour of jeanne d'arc where she don't get jailed...
and the cathedral the tallest of France and former tallest of the World (for a few years) :)
Love Rouen!
So many things to talk about Rouen, so many things to discover and see.
Jeanne of Arc's church roof is based on viking's boat
Rouen is definitely going on my list of places I would like to visit. Thanks for taking us along 🌞
The church is totally a dragon. 🐉 What a nice little trip! The weather looks like it’s been so nice in Paris. ☀️
Man I love these day trips Jay. Thx sir
You bet
So cool to see my city through "tourism eyes" :)
I'm just back after two weeks on a road trip through Paris ->Tours-Ile d'Oléron-La Rochelle-l'ile de Ré-Nantes- Rennes-Saint Malo. The last cities we should have visited were Caen and Rouen but we were so tired that we come back home directly. Hope I could visite that city one day soon !
Seeing Mark on RUclips is such a blessing
Some might say it's a curse 😂😂 Glad you're happy to see him! He's always a treat
Rouen looks an incredible town. Another to add to the list
I mean, I'd go just for the Butter Tower alone
Gotta get some butter too =D
Omg I took a day trip here while I was in Paris! It's such a beautiful city!
Also, yes. Definitely a dragon.
🔥🔥🔥 Great spot for a day trip!
Ah Jay's vlogs are back, how wonderful!
Thanks!
I love Rouen, it has been a long time since I last visited. Thank you for this Jay 😘
My pleasure 😊
I have gone to Rouen several times. I don't know about "the Welsh", but I had one of the best meals of my life in Rouen--Moules Normande, made with mussels, cream & Calvados. Normandy is well known for its dairy products & its' apples. It is coastal so it has wonderful seafood as well. Also important, the Cathedral was made famous by Monet who painted it several times. Really a beautiful town .
We could see how the butter consumption might lead to affording such a nice tower haha
Yes to a dragon 🐉 nice to have you back! That cathedral looked amazing!
Happy to be back at it!
I definitely see a dragon. Rouen was on my planned itinerary for my canceled trip this year. Thanks for the virtual trip.
I ve had been in this place 15 years ago but i never come back again only memories in this video can remember
Loved this, Jay! It was nice to see blue skies and such amazing historical sites. I really enjoyed your narrative and fun interactions with Mark, as well as the artistic filming. One of my favorite vlogs so far!
enjoyed watching this trip from start to finish, thanks!
1) I would take that bike.
2) Pause video at 8:59. I would put that picture on my wall. The light in the first church was amazing.
Great video.
Yes it looks like a dragon to me too. Love the crickets in the background whilst exploring the cathedral 👍
🔥🔥🔥 Thanks! It was nice to explore a bit =)
I’m happy to watch and listen to anything you feel like chatting about😀 I need to scroll back as I haven’t seen the mobile phone reviews results so I need to hunt them out x
I love it. I’ve been there about 15 years age, too long. It’s so beautiful.
I remember Rouen being very bustly. We could hardly get the car down the street with all the people and cars. Ate wonderful fish. Imagine if there were a rule: no pizza during Lent!!!
Great video with brilliant music. honestly the best music on my youtube subscriptions
Glad you enjoy it! And thanks =)
I could totally hang with a dude not afraid to wear a Pokémon shirt.
Thank you, one of the many smaller cities in France I hope to visit!!
I'm gonna get to all of them ;D
Oh my goodness, I so needed that trip! Thanks 😊 👌👍
Thanks for the memory. It's been many years since I was in Rouen. I had forgotten about the dragon church. But I didn't buy a bicycle that day.
Yes, it does resemble a dragon. Thanks for the trip to Rouen.
Wow ,what a beautiful place, I hope we are allow to travel soon!,, take care and thank you...
I understand the beautiful stairs inside the cathedral led to the library; built in late 1400's..
Jay, thank you for your Vlogs. You are in an ideal location. Even if I can't be there, I can see beautiful places thanks to you. When I was in Paris last year, I did use a lot of your tips and they helped so much! Even though I did get lost because one of the metro lines was closed.
It looks like it could be inspired by a dragon 🐉.
That wheel looks like a time trial wheel.
The last time I was in Rouen was in 2015. It’s a great town. Next time I’m in France I need to spend a few days in Rouen.
Mark's finding all kinds of bike goodies lately
Hey Jay!! So glad you went here!! We are going next year!! Yes!! I see the dragon!!
🔥🔥😆
Beautiful tour!
Thank you!
Coming from Rouen: the dragon church was built indeed to be special...but I heard it represents the flames in which Jeanne d'Arc died. Secondly: it's good you noticed the different styles in the cathedral. For example, the tower on the right side (when facing it) is called the "butter tower" (tour de beurre) as it was financed by taxes on butter during christian fasting periods (don't have the english for it: "carême") Good you had some good time in my home city ☺️
"Swapping sides" is such a nice phrase for death and destruction by war...haha. And yes, dragon. Your ex was deliberately trying to NOT see it.
😂😂
I saw a dragon when I first went to Rouen many years ago, but then again I love dragons and look for them everywhere.
amazing cathedral
Bicyclist here. Going nuts wanting details about the bike!!!
I did that -: Cathedral and Flunch ...brought back happy memories and also we went by cathedral lite up at night beautiful golden lights. 😙
it's not a dragon , Its shape evokes both the flames of the pyre and a boat at the top for the maritime world of Rouen; and the rounded vault with its wooden frame recalls the shapes of Viking longships. The church was inaugurated on May 27, 1979 by Valéry Giscard d'Estaing on the market square, the place where Joan of Arc's pyre was placed on May 30, 1431.
I still see a dragon ;)
@@JaySwanson I m sure this dragon will be in your next book ?
I loved this town!!!
I live 1 blk away from the "Dragon" :-) vieux marche Rouen
Yeah for a great outing! Very nice!!
I was wandering around with a friend the same very day. The thing in the cathedral was a bartender marathon. lol
I can see where you caught dragon vibes with the church.
Haha, me too 🔥
Super photography. Rouen seems really interesting ❗️
Thank you! It really is =D
Jay Swanson 👍
I saw a dragon. After you told Mark. And then it came into view.♥️🌠
Pokémon! Puppy! Jay! What a great day! 😂🚲
Yes it was!
Rouen actually belongs to the decendants of the viking rollo and his bloodline, the name Normandy is because that land was given to the northmen in an agreement with the crown. It was stripped from them in the Napoleonic era and is yet to be returned.
Thank you Jay, another wonderful early morning for me beautiful historic city. I would have to see more of the church to decide, does have scales.
Jay, have you gone and/or would you be willing to go to Saint Denis Cathedral? I missed it and would very much love to see it. I have a horror story regarding it/the Saint Denis train station on the way into Paris/ a poor woman and her dog, but I never got to see the actual cathedral inside. Have a great day :)
Re: La tour Beurre, Normandie is the French dairyland....And your Welsh dish was a take off of their rarebit with normand sausages!
Ooh, good to know
Love the day trips. Saw a dragon. Was that Gare St. Lazare?
It was St Lazare! Good eye
I live in Rouen! I like your videos
I'm on team dragon! I totally see what you're seeing!!
Did you realize that the tomb you filmed is the tomb of Richard I of England (aka the lionheart)? :)
Missed that one! I need a longer stay in Rouen for sure
Jay Swanson If you return to Rouen, you have to taste a speciality from the « Auzoux »chocolate factory, it’s called « les larmes de Jeanne d’Arc » so « Joan of Arc’s tears »
Absolutely a dragon. When he pointed out the nose, I was thinking'dragon, yes, but that's not a nose'. We were seeing a short square jutting out a little bit. But when you passed it and it was behind you in the shot? There was no 'do you think it could be a nose?' because that totally IS a dragon nose! And you walked past the dragon and stepped into the belly of the ark! And there had been the uber gothic gaudy (ie Barcelona) church. What was the time frame we are looking at for those buildings? I want to see the City Charter and the rules the city planners worked by. Because I love those buildings and I think every stick in the mud city council/city planners and government architects who can't tolerate anything outside of a box (literally) should be required to sit in on city meetings there for at least a year until they round off their own corners a bit. That has SO jumped up in the top 5 places I want to visit when I get to Paris. Depending on where I am coming from, I may stop there first. Great vlog and this visit is much better than the last one so no worries about not filming that time. Just promise me that you weren't the one who got pissy because she (?) didn't see the dragonway. Some people are just very binary and cannot see things. They have my sympathy. But I can't see some things. Like fairy rings. I have to bite the left half of my tongue to resist saying 'are you feeling okay?' Now I HAVE to go to Roeun (sic) to see the building again and see the ship and tribute to Jeanne D'Arc as explained by Stephen10 below. But that is still a dragon's nose.
However you see the dragon, there it is ;D
What a beautiful place👍
Definitely a dragon. Welcome back!
🔥🔥🔥 haha, thanks =D
It was a pretty nice video, I really like seeing how people react to my city :) But I have to explain something quickly: the church isn't meant to look like a dragon but a combination of a viking boat and somewhat of a fish. Honestly, I only see the boat ;)
The church is inspired by drakkar of viking , to a french Normand Man @Jay Swanson
👍
Excellent video. Thanks!
You are welcome!
Absolutely looks like a dragon. Rouen looks interesting....Great vlog Jay. X
🔥🔥🔥 It was a ton of fun =D
Nice.. day trips en France .. go next week to Liege ... ecoute la languee francais .. waiting for the next trip from you Jay...
Im planning on visiting Paris once travel is a real possibility again (maybe summer), would you recommend a 28 year old man and his 25 year old brother to visit Versailles or Rouen as a side trip from Paris? Versailles look amazing and all but it seems that while Rouen is very beautiful as well you can have more "fun" there than in Versailles.
Ask Mark where we can by child pajamas tops in adult sizes. Sorry couldn't resist. Rouen is beautiful. Monet thought so also. Be well and safe
It's officially a dragon if there's a 🐉👾 across the street or otherwise in close proximity! {Also: Who was that on the wall at 13:10? At first I thought it was George Harrison, but I blame my husband's GH obsession for that....}
Such a beautifully moody city!
You GOOD!
Morning Jay good vid again hope u ok
sorry I live in Rouen and basically this church is inspired of a boat hull and a fish form. ;)
I live in Rouen and i like butter... nice to see you not far from me lol
Dragon 100% what a beautiful city. I’m obsessed with Joan of Arc. Merci
this was so fun
Dont say Garcon, but doesn't recommend what to actually say instead. Thank you for the useful tip.
If you're trying to ask the simple question, "What should I say instead of Garçon?" Happy to provide an answer. "Pardon" or "Excusez-moi" always works. (Being polite)
No Dragon sorry if I remember rightly from my school trip it's meant to represent the flames from Joan of arc burning.
Andrew Sharp it'´s a flame and a boat at the top for'the maritime world of'rouen and the interior represent the shape of a viking boat.
@@stephen10. Thank you the school trip was in the 80's so not a bad memory😂😂😂
Andrew Sharp very good memory... me i live in rouen lol
Definitely well worth a visit =)
Totally a dragon, an abstract dragon :-)
It's in there ;D
Il y a plusieurs cathédrales à ROUEN :
Nôtre-Dame-de-Rouen, Sainte-Jeanne-D’Arc, Saint-Maclou, Sainte-Catherine, ....
😃😎👍
it's so pretty....imagine it in christmas season 😍
Absolutely dragon with a pirate ship inside to boot.! #TeamDragon
What’s the fastest way on train to get to Rouen on the train from the Arc de Tromp?
Didn’t finish the story on Joan or did I miss it?
Rouen is my hometown
Glad you enjoyed it! =D

Definitely a dragon!
🔥🔥🔥
Jay, where do you put a bike when getting on a train?? 🚂
There are special cars in some (most?) regional trains where you can hang your bike.
