There is a RUclips interview made a few years ago with one of the loriginal SAS guys, he complains that some authors try to portray Paddy Mayne as a drunk and bully. He states Paddy Mayne was a very fine officer who the men would follow anywhere.
Dear BBC. We few in Canada enjoyed the Rogue Heroes immensely. The series was so good that I stopped at Part 5, just to spread the joy out a bit further. (Watched Pt. 6 the next day). I would say that out of 511 comments, 511 people are "all-in" and looking forward to season 2.
I'm so glad I watched this series. It's just so terrific. It has a great script & a fantastic cast. I agree with the comments below about Jack O'Connell. He's so good in it, he deserves an award for his performance. He looks like he's having a blast playing Paddy Mayne. I can't say it enough - WATCH IT!!!!!

@@pohfromipoh No. underfunded as in how much money is put toward each mission rather than mow much each soldier is paid. Search Chris Ryan podcast, he was SAS during the gulf war, they were severely underfunded and accepted missions were there was little chance of survival. Chris is lucky to be alive, some of his comrades were less lucky.
Only on episode 2, but whoever put together the soundtrack for this is a fookin genius!!! War dramas are one of my least favourite genres but this is truly floating my boat!! Bloody well written. 👏
Really enjoyed this show. Has made me want to learn more about the war in Africa. I see lots of people criticising some casting/characterisation of real people as not being realistic - but this is a fictionalised version of the story. Not a biopic! This is Ben MacIntyre's take on events according to his research; other authors have other takes. I love this dramatisation! The three leads were fantastic, could not even pick a favourite performance. Ok I can. It's Jack O'Connell. 🙂 But seriously Alfie Allen owned the very difficult Jock Lewes part like he was made for it. And Connor Swindells struck just the right posh yet practical note. All round fab.
Yes and something I've noticed is I never see him much but all of he's latest projects in the last few years may not have been massive blockbusters apart from unbroken and 300 rise of an Empire. But they are all movies and tv shows that have great ratings and reviews. He has real talent that isn't being wasted. You may not see him in mainstream high budget films all the time but he's still "made it" and doing very well for himself. It's quite awesome to see how he has matured and made a very successful career for himself. Wow, can you believe it was over a decade ago since he played cook. Apart from the rise episode of course which still isn't far from a decade ago.
No Lt was ever so rude to a Maj. No Lt ever duffed over 3 Monkeys, who knew who he was, and didn't go to the glass house for some time. BBC pushing insubordination and a complete lack of respect for authority as hard as ever.
Attacking 3 monkeys like that would get him sent to the glass house. I recommend The Hill with Sean Connery and Roy Kinnear. The SAS may have been a little lawless but that is just ridiculous.

Jack O'Connell is an excellent actor. I read that the sign of a good actor is that you don't really notice them because they are so good and such a chameleon........think Gary Oldman at the beginning of his career in JFK, Dracula, State of Grace, True Romance. You have to Google them to realise they are one and the same person. Jack O'Connell is the same. He seems to be trying to play totally different people and succeeding. I'm sure he'll go down as one of the greats. And when I hear he's doing a film with the director of THE best film ever (in my opinion) ....Heat, I can't help getting excited for him. 👏
American here. i had finally gotten around and watched The Mummy [2017][took me so long becuz i had heard it was shit but i actually rather enjoyed it quite a bit]. i was also quite taken with Sofia. i did a quick IMDB search and wanted to see more of her, which led me to Rogue Heroes. In the last 3 or 4 months ive watched and re-watched the entire series about 4 or 5 times. Saddened "Reek" [Alfie Allen] was killed off but absolutely love the entire cast. waiting with bated breath for season 2!

The early SAS we straight out of Elizabethan England, they were basically pirates fighting a very private war. An eclectic mix of posh boys and geysers. If your not British you will have no idea of how lethal a mix that is. I just hope they get the tone right, these blokes were bloody insane.
Well, there was an old American TV show called Rat Patrol, which was probably inspired by the exploits of the SAS in North Africa. However, all the heroes wound up being Americans, though...

BBC, you've really outdone yourselves with this production. The setting, the outfits, the casting, the plot are all superb. This series deserves to be in the pantheon of A tier war series like Band of Brothers and Generation Kill.

LRDG stayed in service separate from the SAS until the end of the war when they were disbanded , but yes they were the start of the SAS as Sterling was part of the LRDG to begin with.
I don't think even this series could show what a crazy and probably deeply damaged individual Paddy Mayne was. An absolute force of nature and an incredible man but he had serious demons.
I'm hoping the show being a critically acclaimed success MIGHT get the government to revisit the long-denied Victoria Cross for Paddy. I don't think he would have given a shit one way or another, but Britain needs her heroes.
Hope they cover the SOE and the incredible Major Anders Lassen - a Danish aristocrat who fought in the SAS and SBS. He once submitted an after action report that consisted of 5 words: 'Landed. Eliminated Germans. Fucked Off.'
The SOE does need to get more attention. I wouldn't mind an anthology covering their operations in different theatres and how operations differed from each other along with the issues that the SOE had with MI6 due to the two having very different jobs.

Randolph Churchill joined the SAS CO David Stirling and six SAS men on a mission behind enemy lines in the Libyan Desert to Benghazi in May 1942. The Benghazi Raid did not reach its goals and Randolph severely dislocated his back when his truck overturned in a road accident during the journey home
AC DC for the Aussies and they did Thunderstruck. Nice to see the half ton Chevy (two wheel drive, I kid you not), where did they get that from as I'm sure none survived. The props dept had their work cut out.
At last! I remember reading some rather shoddily written fictional story inspired by this and wishing it were just the real story (fictionalised). I wonder how they'll deal with the first mission what would be the SAS went on. It didn't exactly go... well. They'll need to get past it to get to the better climax.
It wasn't bad, part 1 but I do hope they have a good enemy. A German officer played by Thomas Kretschmann who is just as crazy as Tom Hardy's "Mayne" character.

👍👍HELLUVA series. Jus finished the series and I thought it was purdy damn good. It was done very good and I was hooked by the end of episode 1. Plus it has a killer soundtrack. I highly recommend watchn' this series you wont regret it
Pretty good, bit self conscously post modern. At least the BBC didn't try casting Idris Elba as David Stirling and Jodie Whittaker as Patricia "Paddy" Mayne. Maybe one of them will show up as Kesselring in Season Two.......
Really impressed with the series, Ben Macintyre’s book was an incredible read and this does get most of it right, could have been longer but hey ho. Only issue was the Eve character who was fiction and not necessary to the story. Jack O’Connell was born to play Paddy Mayne. Roll on the next series, Sicily, D-Day and then Germany. I just hope we get to see Roy Farran!
Agree, it would have been odd to have zero women, but actually her character was just annoying. In a wildly implausible but true-ish story, she was the least plausible character!
When you see several machine gun laden jeeps, racing down a German airstrip in the middle of the night blasting everything in sight, with the sound of Motorhead playing on the soundtrack, I mean , how can you top that .
It got better as it went on. I again wager my life's savings that Sterling did not take Churchill's cigar off him and light his own cigarette as depicted.

The desert war is one of my 'favorite' parts of world war 2 (especially operation Compass ; Sir Richard Nugent O'Connor and his Western Desert force kicking Italian behind)

👍👍HELLUVA series. Jus finished the series and I thought it was purdy damn good. It was done very good and I was hooked by the end of episode 1. Plus it has a killer soundtrack. I highly recommend watchn' this series you wont regret it

Pretty good, bit self conscously post modern. At least the BBC didn't try casting Idris Elba as David Stirling and Jodie Whittaker as Patricia "Paddy" Mayne. Maybe one of them will show up as Kesselring in Season Two.......
Really impressed with the series, Ben Macintyre’s book was an incredible read and this does get most of it right, could have been longer but hey ho. Only issue was the Eve character who was fiction and not necessary to the story. Jack O’Connell was born to play Paddy Mayne. Roll on the next series, Sicily, D-Day and then Germany. I just hope we get to see Roy Farran!
Jack O'Donnell is awful as Blair Mayne. His accent is really bad for a start plus Mayne was 6ft 3in tall and 18 stone.
Agree, it would have been odd to have zero women, but actually her character was just annoying. In a wildly implausible but true-ish story, she was the least plausible character!

When you see several machine gun laden jeeps, racing down a German airstrip in the middle of the night blasting everything in sight, with the sound of Motorhead playing on the soundtrack, I mean , how can you top that .
