      To sharpen with this correctly also requires practise since you need to apply constant pressure while rolling that thing along the entire length of the edge, which is not so easy with two moving parts. A flat whetstone is so much easier to work with.

    The German company HORL that invented this system (and that has taken legal action) has a bunch of useful accessories and the ability to swap out the discs for finer and coarser grinding. It's more money, but it might be a better long term investment, particularly if these guys lose their legal battle and go tits up.

      Work Sharp Precision Adjust would probably be a better system for pocket knives, and cheaper ($120usd) than this Horl, and comes with 7 different grits of diamond stones, and strop. This Horl system doesn 't seem like it would be as fun on shorter length and shorter width pocket knife blades. Makes sense for large kitchen knives though.

    @UkuleleJayBBQ Good review. Thanks! One thing to note... Diamond sharpeners are currently made with diamonds only on the surface of the metal substrate (as you say, "coated" at 0:10), not "the entire thickness of the disk" as you stated at 4:47. Diamond sharpeners are either made by bonding the diamond dust with adhesives to metal plate or using an electroplate process to embed the diamond dust into the newly formed metal surface. Eventually they wear out with either method.

      @@UkuleleJayBBQ The correct way to operate the sharpness tester is to place the knife in the holding block groove and slowly and carefully lay the sharp instrument onto the wire. Once its on there, slowly let the weight down and/or lightly push until the wire breaks. In some of tumblrUSA videos comparing his knife to another sharp instrument, he would too quickly push down and slice the wire, causing it to be an inaccurate reading, then turn around and do it correctly with his tumblr sharpened knife, skewing the results in his favor. Deceptive advertising. People have called him out in the comments but they choose to ignore it, or answer with an evasive corporate reply. Hope this helps

    Just an FYI - I received the Tumbler and was quite disappointed because both sides of the magnet holder would not hold any knife even reasonably well so that it wouldn't move during sharpening. Even without using the sharping roller even the smallest of knives barely held on, no matter what was its steel composition from high carbon to stainless. I work with magnets daily and I took Gauss meter readings of the Tumbler magnet block and it was quite weak. I sent back the Tumbler for a refund. I was also surprised that Tumbler didn't even comment on the weak magnet issue, or offer a replacement.

      Hi there, before and after on one my hand position may have been different on one but before and after watch the Hexclad is the same. There is no trickery here if that's what you are looking for. Watch my other videos, lots of them, held the same way. The BESS Tester is the real test (see my video on paper tests). That's not a "sharpness test" that's a apex feel test. The BESS tester shows you the real sharpness which I do on all my recent videos, this was a year ago. I'm here to tell you, for as easy as it is to use, I use this before my Tormek. That's not to say the Tormek sucks, it's just a bigger 'to do.' This system will get your knives razor sharp. I find it a bit challenging to get flared/curved tips as sharp as the main length of the blade, but I would HIGHLY recommend this productd.

      @UkuleleJayBBQ  Год назад +1

      On smaller ones it is hard the magnets are not strong enough in my opinion to hold the blade edge up higher without it falling down and move if you apply pressure. Something with a fat blade like a Civivi Baby Banter maybe but I would definitely use my Work Sharp Precision Adjust Elite for my smaller pocket knives like 3 inch or smaller EDCs. While they may show that, you definitely won’t get the blade by the heel as the roller may hit the handle. Just depends but definitely designed more for kitchen knives a 3-4” pairing knife is probably the smallest. If it had stronger magnets as I have heard the HORL system has, then maybe.

    I just received mine this morning. There are several well thought out features however, after several hours of sharpening just two knives, one one them a high end Japanese single sided kitchen knife the diamond edge was worn to the point that it was only honing the edge….. not cutting it.
    Two, the single diamond end is not even close to coarse enough to effectively “ train/ cut” knives into the 15/20 angle. Trust me, it would take hours and hours to make the initial angle creations on just a few of your knives.

      @UkuleleJayBBQ  Год назад

      Hi Luc and thanks for the comment. No the tip wasn't rounded off. It's actually nearly impossible to do that unless you are working the tip and sliding at an angle. All my knives are belt sharpened or whetstone sharpened. I can't see the rounding you are referring to, but the results have been great. The only caveat, and it's not bad is that this is 2000 grit so you need to start with a dull knife that is not damaged with chips or other issues because it would take forever using this grit. Most people do not have damaged knives. For regular kitchen knives (I did a pocket knife on it and it worked too) it works really well> If it's super dull it will take you longer to get the burr. The nice thing is all my knives are sharp now so once you feel it needs some sharpening, 2 minutes and your back to super sharp! Appreciate the comment! Hope you follow as I'll have more videos with different knidfe brands coming up soon.

    This device, same as the one it's copied from, claims to make sharpening knives easier, but in fact it doesn't. You need two hands to press the magnetic holder and the blade against each other att the same time you need to pay attention to apply even pressure and roll the sharpener along the full length of the edge. Not to mention that fixing the blade edge-up is pretty dangerous, and that the two-piece design takes up more storage space. A decent whetstone is much cheaper, way easier to handle and to store away.

    • @UkuleleJayBBQ
      @UkuleleJayBBQ  11 месяцев назад

      All these device are quite safe actually. A weak magnet makes it less safe. A whetstones takes a lot of practice and many non-knife folks do not want that. These devices allow correct angle consistency without worry. It’s a great concept when executed correctly.

    Disclaimer: I sharpen knives and other tools professionally using the Tormek T-8 system exclusively with a total cost of over $2,500 for the extra diamond stones and most of the jigs.
    While the OP has taken time to post this video, I feel as though it's a plug for this tumbler system. I would never pay that exhorbitant amount for a limited system that has so many user variables in producing a quality edge.
    Having said that, NEVER hone a bevel until both have been ground....this is so incorrect information.
    And, listening to the sound of the knife passing through the paper, I'm not impressed with the sharpness quality. The sound should be almost inaudible on a truly sharp knife.
    The correct sequence of sharpening for a quality edge is as follows:
    1. Grind one bevel till a burr is felt on the opposite bevel.
    2. Grind the opposite bevel until a smaller burr is felt on the first side you ground.
    3. Hone the bevel with the smaller burr first till you feel a tinier bevel on the opposite side.
    4. Hone the tiny bevel till no burr is felt on either side.
    5. Steps 3 and 4 may need to be repeated.
    6. Strop both bevels.
    7. Scope both bevels (if you have one) for looks only...i.e. that "polished" look. Not really neccessarry, it's just a visual thing.
    8. Repeat step six if you really need to for looks.
    You can thank me later😁

    The paper test is pretty bad.
    Even a semi decently sharpened knife will succeed on the paper test.
    I just tested these tumbler rollers myself and the grit they have is something akin to 300-350.
    Without going to a higher grid you really miss out on sharpening those knifes.
    Yes they will succeed on the paper and nail test, but the moment you cut something like a tomato you will feel that the edge is lacking.
    Over all these tumblers are far too expensive for the fact they are angled block with magnets and a rather small diamond stone and a stainless steel plate connected via wood or a stainless cylinder, obviously not forgetting the bearings.
    If you got like a second tumbler in the set that had higher grids on them it would be okay, but for a small diamond stone plate in only a 300-350 grid that only really forms the basic geometry of the edge they are too expensive.
    For the price you could get a stone set that you also use too sharpen tools like chisels.
    You could get a lansky sharpener that clamps you knife/blade and allows you a wide degree of angles and is also fast in sharpening.

      Tumbler has been surpassed by HONE (honesharp.com) by leaps and bounds. See my reviews and tests using a BESS digital tester.

    It's a really good tool for sharpening knives but it cost 100$ you could buy a worksheet for 30 bucks cheaper and it does the same thing just as easy it's a great tool but four hundred bucks I wouldn't buy it but if you want to buy it go ahead I'm just talkin for me

      Agree the HORL at $500 is a premium and at that price you could buy some of the best belt sharpeners. I think the no power option, this style wins over a lot of sharpeners when it comes to a “learning curve” such as. Whetstones or even the angular sliding sharpeners you have to assemble.
