You are kidding right? Work Sharp is always garbage! The diamond abrasives fall off immediately and the ceramic disc is a joke. This dude gets paid to say otherwise! I bought the work sharp, Hone, generic and Tumblr. The Hone was the best by far.
These rolling sharpeners are (wait for it...) revolutionary. I bought a set off Aliexpress with 2 diamond and 3 ceramic stones. It's so easy to keep your angles, which I had a lot of trouble with freehand... and it's so much more simple than the fixed angle jibs.

I do like the portability and the fact you get 3 easily replaceable stones but that sucker is SHARP..I'm ordering one! Thanks for a most competent review and instructional!
Thank you! Excellent video. I used to sharpen chisels and blade planes, using a guide to get the angle and stones. Still have them. Been looking at sharpeners for my kitchen knives, and just want simple and easy. The worksharp is priced reasonably. So, I'll likely go with that one. Thanks so much!

Awesome little set up. Do you think that you could elevate the roller by putting it on a cutting block, so that you could clear handles and plunges? My thought is that it would be the bottom side of the circle giving you more room before it hits a handle or plunge.
Depending on the option you can get a really excellent set of sharpening stones with a sink bridge for about the same or even less money. A good set of stones, although maybe not for everyone, will be able to sharpen every single knife without fail, and won't need any additional "hacks" to make it work with certain knives. I highly recommend it if you're passionate about your knives and you have reasonably steady hands. Start with a cheaper knife to practice, and once you get the hang of it you'll be sharpening your chefs knives in no time.
A 10 bucks diamond stone and a strap with a compound is all someone really needs. Oh and some way to make sure they hit a consistent angle. Like a thumb at the back of the blade with a sharpie mark where the knife meets the thumb to keep it consistent.
1/2 way through the video and went to Amazon to check it out and I’m shocked by the price! I thought it’d be like 80 bucks. Been outta the loop for a bit so this is the first time I’ve seen these rolling sharpeners. Thought it’d be cool to grab for the kitchen. I’ll stick with my bench stones for now
I have a Lansky system and like it but I usually wait until I have several knives to sharpen because it takes a couple of minutes to set up and get the knife in the clamp. By the the time I got one knife set up ready to start sharpening I would have it sharpened with this simple system. I'd probably still only use my Lansky system on my best knives but for the kitchen knives that need sharpening fairly often (my sister has some inexpensive kitchen knives) this would be great, could even throw it in the same drawer with them. Great video!
Cool idea. I use the Block sharpener that I carry on a string around my neck for about 40 years or more. A little sharpening device no one's ever heard of.
Looks like a pretty good system for the kitchen, but for my folders & outdoor fixed blades I'll stick with my Lansky & my Wicked Edge. Thanks for the video!
I would say it’s similar but a little bit better than the original 1:it have 4 angles to choose instead of 2 2:you can change the sharpening disc for a different grit But the downside is still there! It still miss the tip of some knifes and it can’t sharpen tall knife like a cleaver without stacking up the drum .
I have the Ken Onion Work Sharp system and love it. I thought this might be good for just a quick touch up... until I saw the price! It costs more than the electric ken Onion system? Wow, I'll pass. But thanks for the video, great job.
I think a better comparison (price and functionality) is the regular Horl 2 ($189), not the Horl 2 Pro ($429). The Pro is probably a bit over the top, but the fast rotating planetary gear is kind of cool. I think you have presented the advantages and disadvantages of these rolling sharpening concepts very well.
Quick solution for kitchen knives where you end up hitting the handle before getting all the way to the heel is to use a board or book to raise the sharpener. This will actually give you a better angle of attack as the wheel will contact the blade at a more perpendicular angle.
For someone whos horrible at sharpening cnt even get an edge with a pill through and cnt get it cutting hair sharp or even close off diamond plates i think i jus cnt hold a consistent angle, would you suggest someone like me buy one of these rolling shstems or would i be better served to buy the worksharp field sharpener u showed and some angle jigs like the lil pyramids or wedges?? This is the first sharpening system that doesn’t scare me, so I look forward to getting it eventually. Also, since I’m not that plugged into the “knife world,” I didn’t even know rolling sharpeners were a thing until WS published their first vid comparing them. Before that, I was thinking I’d eventually get a coarse/fine DMT stone when stropping finally does me no good with the Kizer Swagg’s Swag Back, never mind reprofiling my five year old Good Cook chef’s knife. But this seems a like a way to get a good edge with as much control and patience as possible.
If you have a good set of kitchen knives like Wusthof which are already sharp and you just need to fine tune them, do you have to go through all 3 blades or can you maybe use only the ceramic to keep the knives extremely sharp quickly?
It feels like, perhaps, the Horl system MIGHT be better with the very important exception that this one has an option for a 17 degree edge. I have a Nakiri that is pretty specific in its demand for 17 degrees…so I am a fan of this. I wonder if they also might come out with more grit options if it sells well
This is a great video and you gave great information on this system. I really do wan to get this, but the price is keeping me away for the moment. Still, it's a killer system.
Yeah it's definitely prices on the higher side, I do wish it was around 110 to 120. However your paying to not have to learn the skill, the ease of use. With any system there's a learning curve this has the easiest one by far
when hitting a handle on some knives, would it make sense to lift the sharpening roller up by placing on a cutting board so the sharpening will be done by the bottom portion of the roller?
Raise the wheel on something even more so you're contacting the blade with the lowest portion of the wheel you can and the widest part of the disk should be above enough to clear and get a grind at the very back of the blade
This comment is similar to my last comment. We have the Wusthof sharp knives and we use a honing rod after each use to keep it sharp as new. However, making sure you sharpen at an exact 15 degree angle is not nearly as acccurate honing as it is with your 15 degree magnet angle. If we use the 15 degree roller after say 2 uses, will that be sufficient enough to keep it sharp as new or should we start with the 600 and then use the ceramic. I'm thinking along the lines of keeping the knives sharp at all times vs letting them degrade to needing to use the 320 or 600. Thx.
With this system after you have set the bevel to your preferred angle on your chef knife then you can quickly and easy put a new edge or just touch up in min or seconds,
I'm thinking of getting one of those rolling sharpeners, but I don't know which one is the best. I was thinking Horl 2 from your other video, but now I'm confusing. Any advice between Horl2 and Work sharp?

Can I or should I use this on a Miyabi chef knife? I have the 1000/6000 whetstone and been practicing on a Zwilling Henckels chef knife. I can’t get it sharpen to the point that can easily slice off a paper. This rolling system just seem so much easier.
I received mine yesterday Jared and the 17 and 15 degree magnets came off while removing my vosteed kitchen knife. Work sharp is replacing my block for me for free. Really odd the happened. Noticed very minimal glue holding magnets on
How is this on slicers w lower blade heights? Did you try 2 bevels per side to see how it microbevels like spyderco used to promote w the triangle system?
Would this work on OTF's like an infidel or a combat tradoon? i am desperately wanting a quick efficient solution to get a combat edge on those two knives with my horrible sharpening skills. I cant even use a wicked edge system i payed half a grand for. I hope this one can work on OTFS anyone know?
Why not put a block under the knife holder so that the wheel is making contact an the lowerr 1/2 or 1/4 of the wheel. That should allow the wheel to reach all the way to the end of the cutting surface?

Yes I have a lot of Sharpening system videos, depending on your budget would depend on what I would recommend the work sharp professional is really good and you get everything you need, all in one
Love my WSPA V1. If I spent more time sharpening, I'd definitely upgrade to the V2. But I have a bunch of aftermarket 3D printed accessories for my V1 that make it just as capable as the new V2 Precision Adjust. It just takes me longer because of the smaller stones.
I like it. The horl was way way too much. I was looking into the tumbler, but wasn't sure about thier quality and service. So this might be right up my ally.
Price is higher than I was expecting coming from work sharp, but may be worth it cause it takes considerably longer using their precision adjust sharpener on kitchen knives
Hey Jared quick question, in the scenarios where certain folding knives wouldn't work because the handle/scales/bolsters are making contact with the end of the stones, would disassembling the knife and just putting the blade by itself onto the magnet system work out? Would the blade be able to be full sharpened? I totally get that there's still the possibility that the stone is gonna hit the plunge or the ricasso and that the handle/scales aren't gonna be the problem in those situations, but I'm curious if in the situations where it's just the handle making contact, if disassembly would fix that issue. Thanks for the video!
yeah you could make a handle for blades like this. something as simple as a thin piece of plastic and a screw that goes through the pivot hole would probably work for most knives. you could make a clamp version to
I have always been impressed by the rolling knife sharpeners, but I just don't see this being a better deal than the Ken Onion Worksharp (Which I think is either the same price, or cheaper?) Or just getting some mediocre whetstones. At half the price I could see myself buying it, but I get there's a lot of engineering that went into the design, and that isn't free.
the work sharp belt sharpener is great for fixed blades etc but its a convexed edge the roller will give you a better quality edge on certain knives but both are good
I wish they had something lower than 15 degrees. Higher end Japanese knives sharpen to 12 degrees often, and the steel is hard enough to retain that edge without rolling.
@@NeevesKnivesthis shit ruined a one of a kind custom knife, bro. I bought it for my mom bc she can't sharpen knives. It scratched the surface of the blade from the tip to the base. This shit is absolute trash. I bought it per your recommendation. I don't even know if I can get these scratches out. Could very well be permanent damage.
i wouldnt so no, if you were very carful its possible, but you might not sharpen all the way to the plunge so you would have to add a notch in front of the plunge with a dremel or something, so id just say no
Question: from diamond stones to tradition whetstones, how can you compare the grit? Like how diamond stones go from 150-1200ish, but whetstones start at 400-high thousands
so diamonds are almost always more aggressive than whetstones, also the scratch pattern is slightly different, i usually base grit off of diamond grit,, because also depending on the country they use a different rating, like venev 1200 is really 5k, japanes use the j rating, we use the g rating and russia uses the f rating
As NK said, diamonds are a different animal. Firstly, you have to understand that diamonds are *_WAY_* harder than anything else. They are more than 10 times as hard as aluminum oxide. Even if the diamonds are exactly the same shape as another abrasive, the diamonds will cut better, they will just stay that shape and not dull. Not only that, but because of their strength and hardness, they tend to have a sharp, angular profile to start with and stay that way for a while. Which will not only carve out more metal with each path, but carves a deeper path too. Diamonds biggest problem really is that it's hard to keep them stuck to the substrate well enough to keep them from being pulled off. (don't by really cheap diamonds stone/files, if you do, use light pressure) It's an apples to oranges comparison from the start; furthermore, none of the orange orchards from one country agree with any apple orchards or any foreigners on how to grade their crops.
I like how you planned out this video so we were getting info while you were completely sharpening the knife with no speedups. well done!

How is this on slicers w lower blade heights? Did you try 2 bevels per side to see how it microbevels like spyderco used to promote w the triangle system?
Would this work with a boning knife, or is that too narrow of blade width?
you just have to use light pressure because the spine will be near the top of magnet
I can see them coming out with a some finer disks if this system takes off
Does it work with standard sized Swiss Army knives and leatherman charge?
probably not i would say a work sharp precision would be better for that and more affordable
Why not put a block under the knife holder so that the wheel is making contact an the lowerr 1/2 or 1/4 of the wheel. That should allow the wheel to reach all the way to the end of the cutting surface?
WORK SHARP STORE

AS ALWAYS THIS WAS AN HONEST REVIEW, WORK SHARP DID SEND THIS PRODUCT TO ME REQUESTING AN HONEST REVIEW AS WORK SHARP ALWAYS DOES. THEY HAVE NEVER ASKED ME TO SAY ANYTHING IN PARTICULAR WHAT SO EVER WHICH IS ANOTHER REASON I LOVE WORK SHARPS PRODUCTS, THEY APPRECIATE HONEST FEEDBACK, OF COURSE IM CRITICAL OF ALL SYSTEMS AND IN ALL REVIEWS REGARDLESS HOW MUCH I LOVE THE COMPANY. THANK YOU FOR WATCHING.
Did you research the original product ? The one they copied...
So is there a system you recommend for folding knives 🤔
He has a bunch of sharpening videos. He’s a great resource for all sharpening info
Yeah I did a video comparing the horl and tumbler, the tumbler is lower quality in many ways
Thanks for the video!
yeah you could make a handle for blades like this. something as simple as a thin piece of plastic and a screw that goes through the pivot hole would probably work for most knives. you could make a clamp version to
Thanks Jared 😎
I have always been impressed by the rolling knife sharpeners, but I just don't see this being a better deal than the Ken Onion Worksharp (Which I think is either the same price, or cheaper?) Or just getting some mediocre whetstones. At half the price I could see myself buying it, but I get there's a lot of engineering that went into the design, and that isn't free.
the work sharp belt sharpener is great for fixed blades etc but its a convexed edge the roller will give you a better quality edge on certain knives but both are good
Thanks for this review.
Hey buddy will this roll sharpener work on a Spyderco Yojumbo.
I personally wouldn't use it
Would like to see how stainless steel sticks to a magnet????
I wish they had something lower than 15 degrees. Higher end Japanese knives sharpen to 12 degrees often, and the steel is hard enough to retain that edge without rolling.
do you have any cupons for this device? I tried on the links on the video description, but they were all standard prices. thanks!
No I'm sorry I don't
@@NeevesKnivesthis shit ruined a one of a kind custom knife, bro. I bought it for my mom bc she can't sharpen knives. It scratched the surface of the blade from the tip to the base. This shit is absolute trash. I bought it per your recommendation. I don't even know if I can get these scratches out. Could very well be permanent damage.
i might get my camilus carni this have their handheld w strop
Nice review. Sad to see you cutting up the new Smoky Mountain Knife Works catalog, but at least it was a Benchmade page. 😂😂😂
Cant you just tape up the spots you dont want to hit tho?
Love me some work sharp!
Jared, can you use this on a Spyderco PM2 and PM3
i wouldnt so no, if you were very carful its possible, but you might not sharpen all the way to the plunge so you would have to add a notch in front of the plunge with a dremel or something, so id just say no
Question: from diamond stones to tradition whetstones, how can you compare the grit?
(don't by really cheap diamonds stone/files, if you do, use light pressure)
It's an apples to oranges comparison from the start; furthermore, none of the orange orchards from one country agree with any apple orchards or any foreigners on how to grade their crops.
In your review would of been awesome to see a before and after of a dull to sharp knife
Very interesting system if the price was half of what they sell this for...
