"I was a hitman, I wasn't the money counter."
I love it when Jamie plays along with Adams shenanigans.
Sorry to burst your bubble but that line was most probably fed to him by the producers. Cause in one of the early behind the scenes special episodes of the mythbusters, you'll see scenes like that where the producers will pause the scene after Adam says something funny and tells Jamie to answer with a particular reply. That one episode ruined the show for me
@@adamthomas1222 maybe dont watch any behind the scenes for any tv show then lol
@@adamthomas1222The sad truth of television is that even gameshow banter and so-called reality tv feuds are scripted and/or created to cater to the "bloodlust" of the viewing public.
@@201bob but it wasn't shown as behind the scenes, it was an actual episode, it was a special tho.
@@adamthomas1222 irrelevant. your complaining that tv shows are edited.
So dont watch anything behind the scenes.

Mythbusters: "320 pounds...to put that into perspective..."
Me: "Oh good, they're going to explain in a measurement system I understand"
Adam: "It's about the weight of your average Linebacker"
Me: *Cries in European ; ;*
149,150 kg, you’re welcome
@@jelbecornelis3139 got that about, around 2.2 pounds per kg. But would've expected them to compare it to a washing machine or something like that.
@@HappyBeezerStudios 1350 bananas
it's not even accurate, Adam might have meant to say average lineman not linebacker.
Similarly, 100ft sounds far.....
30m is just ahead of you.....
They use American measurements to sound extra special
I remember watching this episode when I was in high school, after this I pranked my classmates intercalating the pages of their notebooks and saw them struggle trying to separate them, they thought I glued 'em, 😂😂.

"you need a pair of tanks to take apart the phonebooks"
dang, there goes my money, no jets this week
20:23
"This is one of those really, really cool myths that anybody can try cuz everybody's got a phonebook" Well that sentence aged like fine milk :'D
Phone book friction is one of those simple but awesome things.
27:24 their reaction to the buoys LOL
I feel like the phone book one is confirmed because it said that it’s basically impossible to separate them and if you have to get 2 tanks to separate them then that is an extreme nobody can do. Getting 2 tanks to do it is basically the definition of ‘basically impossible’
You don't need tanks, just 8000 pounds of force
@@mmmdawe how is getting 8000 pounds of force something reasonable 😂
@@MrMonkey2475 with elaborate system of pulleys and levers you can achieve this
@@mmmdawe umm no
@@mmmdawe Even if you are right, thats not exactly what I would call reasonable xD
Well that didn’t age well. Everyone can try because everyone has a phone book... 😂
Lol nevermind the fact that everyone needs 2 phone books to try this lol. Good luck finding one in most homes 😂
Maybe you can ask your mates nicely if you can ' borrow ' there Phones for a ' science ' experiment including 2 rental cars😮

Dude I haven't had a phone book since the 90s, that's what the Internet is for
@@LeonAshley2754 I'm good, I'll leave the homosexual mating to the Brits, Scotts, Welch, Irish, Ozzy's and kiwi's. Speaking of, is that why there's more brown babies in England now? All the white guys only mate with other guys?
What a piece of history this one is. Back in my day, we had books with phone numbers in it.
Same here
And me
Good old yellow pages
20:28 "everybody's got a phonebook" that's how you know it's an old episode
And then you rotated the numbers one by one to make a phone call. ☎️
So... how many mythterns had to clean that lake of foam? XD
Interestingly, it seems the phone books ultimately failed by tearing and not by the pages sliding with respect to each other. That means the total friction force exceed the tensile strength of the sheets of paper. I wonder if this kind of joint would be useful for some practical application other than phone books.
Obviously the phonebooks are not completely impossible to pull apart from each other, but the amount of friction they create is just so strong that anything even remotely close to functional won't do it.
I imagine if we'll look at Google like we look at a phone book.
Also, shoutout to the man that suggested what amounts to one of the best moments in Mythbusters. Certainly among my favorites.
4:11 its also sort of the same way the deep pile foundations in a skyscraper work
A big fan of the series from Colombia
Woahhh a season 6 episode has appeared
"This is one of those cool myths that anybody can try, because everyone has a phone book"
Time flies past so quickly. I don't think I've seen a phonebook in 10 years.
While the explosion is cool, it’s unbelievably dangerous, especially since they blew the shark to bits with the second blast.
That turn from excitement to dread was so telling. Everyone on the boat could have been obliterated, and Tory’s comment ‘this is like the worst experiment ever’ shows off just how much dread they’re under. All for a ‘test’, to satisfy audiences. The second blast was sufficent to do just that.
they had shit bomb teams, that bomb team fucked up blasts every episode, normally youd barelly have an issue those dudes had issues every single episode, either that or the producers added it in post to create artificial tension. So yeh, either really shit pyrotechnics or just producer shit,
They actually created the same "V" shape problem in their last phonebook pull test. Im sure it weakened the setup many times. If you look at the video in slow mo, you can see that the middle pages are all under tension, but the edges are slack. So, it first breaks a small chunk in the middle, then it keeps cascading outwards, one chunk at a time.
Editors must have loved Jamie wearing the same outfit everyday.
28:49 My absolute FAVORITE ADAM QUOTE 😂😂
I love how wildly off base Tory Grant and Kari were on the height of that explosion 😂
I love when Adam laughts when he get out with the tank 😂😂😂
at 19:05, you know they can tie the phonebooks to a wall and only pull on one rope, the force will be the same.
2024: what is a phonebook?
2050: what is a phone?
2080: what is a book?
LMAO at Jamie's "trying to make a phone call" joke!!! 🤣
14:50 what a shot. And that was Tori's first try. Why is nobody talking about it? Lol
pretty sure that "first american tank" is a license built renault FT 17 ;) the very first tank in service with a turret! it pioneered the concept of a tank as it still is today! engine seperated from the crew and a central turret! many countries used it in the interwar period and it still saw some action as a tankette in WWII
This is so cool, I wish phonebooks were real
4:24 maybe that Chinese rocket company should have looked into this for their tie downs?
The shark explosion looks like it has a couple different distances. In the underwater view it does look closer to 50 feet. But as a former train conductor, the wide shot that shows the tower of water looks a lot closer to 150 feet.
Also for the phonebook I feel like the separation should have been cleaner to be busted
It's a quite big jump from cars to tanks. A freight truck may have worked as well.
As another commentator has pointed out the peak force was actually 14,000. Seen at 47:29
I really want a life-sized foam shark like the one Tori made. It looks so cool! 🦈
Heisenshark
Would love to see what a team of Clydesdale draft horses could do to those phone books, since they are bred for pulling strength. Just out of curiosity and because horses are incredible ❤🐴🐎
...back in the day, when everybody had a phonebook ;-)
TNT Dynamite was probably more focused maybe creating more pressure. I guess the wave would be higher, but less wide
'everybody's got a phonebook' not that kind anymore. heh...
Didn't check the rupture disks after the 680g of black powder. They probably made it look bigger in the movie for theatrics.
46:12 love when the narator laughs, makes them feel real, rather than just a voice.
I understand what u mean...
Lifeless AI used these days

Great episode as always.
One of my favorite episodes
one of the best episodes
Great episode as always
Sounds like the start of "Killing In the Name" by Rage Against The Machine, at 29:27.
I thought so too, then it seemed to change to something similar but different
People don't even know what a phone book is now. Ah the yellow pages.
the avg weight of a linebacker is not 320 pounds, Adam meant to say linemen. Jack Lambert 240 pounds, Dick Butkus 220 pounds, Brian Urlacher 258 pounds, Ray Lewis 240 pounds. these also are not examples of average linebackers but some of the biggest to ever play.
I dare say this is one you probably can no longer try at home. Phonebooks have gone virtually extinct.
I wonder how much a mint condition phone book from 1988 would be worth 😂
41:24 the worst experiment until the day they express delivered a cannonball into somebody's house.
I love this myth so much,
Why do I feel like the shark explosion got some changes in the script during the filming.
the 2 1/2 sticks of dynamite worth gave an impressive explosion that took out the shark. So the dialogue in the movie works out right.
But someone said the explosion had to be bigger. And they cut down on the taking apart stuff to get powder part.
21:06 what episode was this?
Jamie is in charge of safety? Why isn't he wearing proper foot protection? Scandalous!
I'm not sold on the phone book myth being busted. If you look closely, when the tanks pull the books apart, the pages are actually removed from their bindings, as opposed to the interleaving being undone. Still a cool episode though.
Does anyone know where I could see that original phone book parody video?
Why would you need 2.5 sticks? 1 would be more than enough.
When you realize that Grant actually fixed his buckteeth in the later seasons when you compare what he actually looked like in the earlier seasons, lol.
I wonder what has become of the poor intern that had to weave the phonebooks.
Two things - I love to check out the tags on all the boxes in the shop. That's cool to imagine what they use them for. (and what "toys" entails). Second - I am so weirded out by the fact that Tory (mostly) has to have his caps or t-shirts censored. Wth is on them?!?!
Probably brand names, I don’t think that discovery likes having brands obviously on display, why the car badges and number plates on the rental cars are also taped over
its called "greeking" in production, essentially removing brand names or logos to stop companies from claiming lawsuits etc for any reason
10:40
Now while tory finishes up, hugo grant and I start testing the first part of the myth.
Where is hugo grant?
Gen Z: "What's a phone book?"
I've been watching the full series again, and I have to say, I think Jamie had a sense of humor that Adam just didn't understand. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Adam Savage, but I think he got irritated a lot when Jamie was trying to be funny. Also, I'd imagine Adam's ADHD didn't help matters much either.
ADHD meets Autism
autistic person meets someone whose 1% more autistic
I had noticed that in other episodes as well, Adam sometimes visibly sours up and changes gears, or steps away from the scene so that Jamie is in full focus and usually chokes up.
But i can also kinda understand it if Adam was not always very cooperative of Jamie's moments, because Jamie was rarely cooperative as well, even though that was his shtick.
Then there's those moments like the powder keg where Adam pushed Jamie away from the gunpowder and preventing him from kicking it out, on the other side of that is Jamie's repeated bellybutton paintball shot on Adam.
It's a tug of war.
19:41 UMMM 😐 WHAT THE TRUCK !!
At long last Jamie is home.
It's not just the surface friction of the pages, it's also the slight angle of every page that amplifies the friction.
Standing right beside tow chains under tension is one of the gravest of H&S violations. These guys are smart enough to know that, so the fact that they would so casually hazard themselves is an indication of fuckery afoot.
Good shit.great episode
3086 ft lb to a nutritional calorie so 8000 lb is semi low
Underwater explosions are terrifying beautiful
Can anyone understand what explosive they use in the end? 4000 lbs of _____?
400 lbs of TNT
A phone Book?

Many people seem to miss the fact that the phone books didn't neatly separate in the end. They ripped a lot, which wasn't allowed to begging with.
I need that Mythfits shirt Adam is wearing!
I thought he said big boobs, not big booms
33:47 so big and WHAT? 🤣
weighty 😊
29:27 RATM - Killing in the name
No more phone books but stick two Bibles together and watch as all your friends suddenly start believing in God again.
but then someone brings two tanks and everyone becomes atheist. and 20 years forward nobody knows what a bible is
what happened to the channel
Is this fiction or a case of friction, need to know
the myth was cool but i dont understand why they always try to link it to some shitty movie nobody ever seen. It's so odd. it was fine without the crap movie. And the book thing always annoyed me, it clearly ddint separate the pressure to hold the spine together broke the pages, half the book flew off. It didn't separate the back broke again.
In the 21st century, printed phone books are increasing criticized as waste. In 2012, after some North America cities passed laws banning the distribution of telephone books, industry group sued and obtained a court rulling permitting the distribution to continue. In 2010, manufacture and distribution of phone books produced over 1,400,000 metric tons of greenhouse gasses and consumed over 600,000 tons of paper annually.
They are no longer printed since 2014 in Czech Republic. You wont find a phonebook anywhere around here. So yeah, mythbusters were kinda lucky that these things still existed back then. Now one would have to use two big books or something.
20:23 Oh wow that's dated the show. Anyone got a phone book now?
When was the last time anyone's seen a phonebook?
What is a phonebook?
Which deep blue see movie is this one ? 7:54
Jamie is a wimp.
I'm here to comment about grocery store line, the serpentine one u need to put 2 people in the casher so after the one there's one coming and no time to waste, try to re-create it and use 2 people each cashier after the one leave the next one and then the other one come so no time wasted by just walking...this is not debatable this is my only opinion...
the explosion should have been the last segment of the episode not the phone books lol
