    I think this chap is a superb teacher. I have listened to his 3 part “great courses” series on the Middle Ages 3 or 4 times.

    His name in English is "Charles the Great" His name in German is: "Karl der Grosse". . . . "Charlemegne", (Charl le Magne), is FRENCH!

    3:15 "Clodwig", became "Claude" in France, and "Ludwig" in Germany. The French created "Louis" from Clovis. The two nations share a common origin.

      And the Spanish created "Claudio" which contains within itself the word "audio"

      @@marceloestebanmauricio4934 If you understand Linguistics, you know that words evolve. Spain, (Iberia), played no role in the history of the HRE.

      @@kennylong7281 Spain absolutely played a part in the history of the HRE. For one because it was Charles V (Emperor and king of Spain among others) who removed the low countries from it and gave them to, Spain.

    Always funny to see medieval European maps with the Dutch province Flevoland which was only taken from the sea in the second half of the last century. And it even shows the dike closing off the large body of water in the middle (the IJsselmeer nowadays) from the North Sea.

    According to 23andMe a large % of the population with French & German ancestry are defendants of this king.
