  • Welcome to I’ll Knit (& Spin!) If I want To! I asked y’all to send in some of your questions (from everything from fiber arts, to designing and on!) so I could put together a little video for y’all every Friday doing my best to answer your questions!

In this week’s episode we cover:
    1. So listening to you talk about spinning finally got me hooked and I recently added dyeing and spinning to my wool related activities ☺️ Of course I would love to join the attune shawl kal with my own handspun. Working on my plying seems a prerequisite for that for where I am at my spinning now. So here is my question ( one out of many 😅): what do you do when a single breaks while plying???
    2. Hi Andrea! I love seeing all of your handspun FOs! As a fairly new spinner, I am struggling with what quantity of fiber I need to buy and spin in order to make full projects. For example, I love your handspun DRK Everyday cowl and Harlow hat that you showcased in episode 117- how much fiber would you recommend spinning for small to medium projects like those? Do yo have any tips for stretching a precious 4oz bump of hand-dyed fiber as a combo spin?

    3. I've been participating in Farmer Daughter's Fibers sock squad this year. I'm really enjoying it and now have a lot of partial skeins of fingering weight yarn and some unused mini skeins. Do you have any pattern recommendations for using up these or other scraps? They don't have to be socks! ;) Thanks!

    4. I was wondering how you do your yarn organization on the steeking stitch column when you're going across those stitches to the other side? Does the colorwork yarn stay on the side and get picked up later, does it follow the column down? Like with the Shifty, or Stone Crop.. do you take the colorwork yarn across even with the MC rows? Thank you so much!!!!! I got hung up on this on the Shifty Cardigan haha
    5. Hi there!! I’m trying to learn quicker knitting techniques and wondered if you have tried a yarn tension ring? I think that’s what it’s called, it holds the yarn higher to pick it up? Thanks!! Love all you offer and i’ve learned soooo much watching your videos and tutorials.

For the person looking for scrappy projects, I started this year trying to get rid of my partially used skeins from doing sock squad a few years ago and here are a few more ideas to think about. A lot of folks do blankets with scraps (in either crochet or knitting) and there are a lot of patterns for those on Ravelry. The other thing I did was make a Seaglass Tee from Wool and Pine which is all about using up scraps and it was pretty fun. I did a few more pairs of socks, the tee, and I'm doing a long term project crocheting granny squares that will eventually become a blanket.

The colours in your handspun DRK Everyday Cowl coordinate so beautifully with the shirt (jacket?) that you are wearing. I think it's a lovely colour on you.
Like you, if I have a single break while plying I just poke the end back in there and keep on plying.

The yarn tensioning ring (aka Norwegian thimble) has been a total game changer with colorwork! I personally found that catching floats when using both hands was kind of finicky and that trying to hold both strands with my left hand made it hard to maintain color dominance, but the ring solves both of these problems for me. It definitely takes some getting used to and playing around with, but once you do I think it’s a pretty amazing tool.

I have never taken a spinning class. I bought my wheel, watched a couple videos on RUclips and practiced on about 4 ounces of fiber until I got the hang of it. I never know what anything is called, don’t know what kind of draft I’m doing, I’m just making yarn, and that’s the way I like it. I thought your explanation of what to do if a single breaks was perfect! I do it the same way, and it works!

I’m laughing at your view on spindle spinning. I said the same thing; I have no desire to learn to spin on a spindle. Then I saw Rachel show a spindle with actual bobbins to hold the cop and I was inspired. I’ve ordered one so I’m going to give it a try too. Never say never! 😁

  • @janatherton9194

With the spindle if you start feeling your singles drift apart and the spindle dropping more frequently, that is a good time to wind your cop off onto a storage bobbin, or a cardboard tube. I love my little Turkish style spindles for travelling, they have been to Scotland with me a few times, they dismantle completely and fit into a small project bag cushioned with a braid of fibre, or some small mini batts and the turtles can be plied, or knitted from straight away.

Thank you so much for verbalizing exactly how my knitter's brain works. I am definitely an intuitive knitter and have adapted patterns...just because it seems the right thing to do. It's also the reason I started some designing and I, too, do it on the needles as I go. The technical scientific side I figure out as I move along. You've been an inspiration in helping me jump into designing. I just published my first sweater pattern and it was truly a labor of love, with a lot of anxiety as well, LOL. My hat patterns were a piece of cake compared to a graded sweater. Thank you for my weekly shot in the arm from your podcast. Stay well and knit on.

Andrea, it was great to hear about how much you are enjoying learning to spin with your drop spindle. I have been thinking about learning to spin for awhile but didn't know where to start and the expense of a wheel for something I wasn't sure I would enjoy always stopped me form make the leap into spinning. A friend suggested drop spinning and it must have been fate because a week later I received an email from my LYS and they were offering a class on learning to spin with a drop spindle. I immediately signed up and will be taking the course next week. I hope I enjoy the process as much as you seem to be. Who knows one day I may be able to participate in your spin it to knit KALs.

All crafting (and other skills) begins with learning some techniques I think, but art and magic happen when technique interacts with the human being! What we produce is unique, of course, but our way of getting to that product is also unique. Hooray for diversity!

I purchased a Norwegian thimble but unfortunately couldn’t use it as my fingers were too small and it just flopped round. I was even gonna try to learn continental to use it but was useless. I’m an English knitter and hold two yarns on first and third finger of right hand so can throw each individual finger during colourwork 🙂

I've tried the metal ring before. I actually made a video of me testing it on my channel (sorry it's in French though) and it did not work for me. It's too big to stay in place and it forces me to hold my finger too high. I prefer just placing both colors on my finger without any gadget.

I need help. I really wanted to try one of the tension rings to put on my index finger on my left hand while doing color work. I have arthritis in my last joint of my index finger making it impossible even to get a “large” ring on that finger. The rings I have purchased are very firm and I am unable to stretch them to make them fit. Does anyone have any ideas? I’m not sure I really want to buy a custom made one, but it seems I might need “an extra large” help.🦊🤨
