    seems strange to bring up the roadside assistance app via message. is there precedence for this? I can't think of another example.

      I believe it’s simply because the satellite communication is via text. But yeah, I see what you mean.

    • @j2simpso
      @j2simpso 9 месяцев назад +2

      How else could you bring it up? Maybe if it was a button on CarPlay I could see that but not everyone has a CarPlay enabled vehicle. Irrespective the satellite capability on the device is limited to text. Yes I know that sucks compared to calling, but look it's baked into every iPhone since last model year's. It doesn't require a subscription...yet and I reckon it won't be expensive when a subscription comes out since you are transmitting text in emergency situations only

    What if we don't have AAA? Can we use our car's roadside assistance feature, provided that the corresponding app is installed (for example, Mercedes-Benz Mercedes Me Connect)?

    • @j2simpso
      @j2simpso 9 месяцев назад +6

      If you don't have AAA that's fine, they will still come over and fix your car. Yes it won't be "free" since you aren't a member but it's better than nothing. It is my understanding that just AAA in the US is covered. Would it be nice to have more choice? Absolutely! But you know what? Just about anywhere in the US you can be certain to have AAA coverage. And look, if you are stuck in the middle of Alaska with no cell coverage, trust me you'll take the AAA service over standing on your principles of Mercedes-Benz service which you cannot get anyway since you have no coverage.

    How about roadside assistance for bicycle riders like me? Is it available?

    • @AshleyRyan15
      @AshleyRyan15 10 месяцев назад

      AAA provides bicycle assistance for all members, and likely also provides fee-for-service bicycle assistance through roadside assistance via satellite

    • @j2simpso
      @j2simpso 9 месяцев назад +1

      Fellow cyclist and apologies if I am naive but what sort of service do you need? As a cyclist you need to be prepared to fix the basic stuff like flat tires, or twisted chain. When I cycle (and I cycle just about everyday) I pack a couple things with me: a multi-tool, a handheld electric bicycle pump, an inner tube and a patch kit. The last time I had a flat tire was over a year ago, and I got that fixed in about 15 minutes. Oh and in case you are wondering how I avoid punctures, I changed my tire to a Schwalbe Marathon Plus tire which has something like 5 mm of insulation meaning unless you run over a nail, you aren't getting a flat. Yes it does add about half a pound to the weight of my cycle but it really pays off.

    Will this ever work for my new 12 Pro?

    • @Anandkumar-ie9yd

      No. iPhone 14 and above.

    • @j2simpso
      @j2simpso 9 месяцев назад

      It does not and there is nothing Apple can do to make that happen. The feature requires hardware the iPhone 12 or 13 for that matter just don't have - namely a satellite transceiver allowing it to transmit to data when you don't have cell service. The only time you'll ever benefit from this feature is if you are stranded in the middle of nowhere with no cell service.

      You need to learn to embrace USB-C. I think when you see what you can do with it (such as charging other apple devices) and the fact that iPhones are finally compatible with Apple computers your mind will be changed.
