- I add a roof over top of the outdoor kitchen to protect it from rain and snow. I repurpose the top of a grain bin. If you are interested in a sawmill, Norwood HD 36 Portable Sawmill, or other, please use my custom link: bit.ly/3O9SnXA
I build an outdoor kitchen for the offgrid property down by the pond. It has a reclaimed sink, cherry solid wood island, and much more to come. The outdoor space at the offgrid is shaping up to be a pretty sweet location for hanging out.

"Self-Reliance" is an 1841 essay written by American transcendentalist philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. It contains the most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes: the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow his own instincts and ideas. This channel will approach self reliance from a modern perspective. and will focus on various build projects using modern amenities, and tools to build a completely self reliant lifestyle.
Many people ask me where I am from and where I film my projects. I am from Northern Ontario, Canada, and live in an area where off-grinding is easy because I have lots of land to build on and experiment with different buildings and materials. Everything I do is to try to be more self reliant, and to depend less on others. But that doesn't mean I don't like working together with other people on projects. Knowing people who have skills is part of being self reliant, and trading skills is a great way to get more things done! - Развлечения
*I use my Norwood HD 36 Portable Sawmill a lot on this channel, and highly recommend it. If you are interested in a sawmill, please use my custom link:* bit.ly/3O9SnXA

"It's a lot harder to move holes after you've dug them!" awesome!
True Blue
Ha ha,
My grandpa told me that. I've found it a very sound piece of advise☝️😉🤣
LEDs around the inner circumference might be nice. Just a thought for night time stuff and filming.
You know what we need for a video? Everything. I don’t know how many hours of video it would take, but I want a tour of everything you’ve done on the property. The minivan treehouse, the hobbit hole cellar, the rain shower, the man shed, the spider hole, the three different cabins, and the sauna, and the lake
Totally agree, and don't forget the cube, the plastic cabin or the tarp cabin or the chicken coop, or his workshop. Also, the Glamper and the boat. So many projects that I would love to see the update on.
P
I'd love to see a small map of the area that shows where everything sits in relation to all the other projects you've done.
Nice having your father/brother and//Don 2helping U with the build.😃😃😃🤗
Stone Masonry has been in my family for several generations, even today it’s what my Father, Brothers, and I do. So naturally when you mentioned building a new fireplace my ears perked up! Everyone has different levels of skills with different trades, but I’m really looking forward to seeing what you come up with. There’s so many beautiful designs and routes you can take to make them unique.
Time and time again I see people just chucking rocks in a circle and calling it good. I demand more!!! Haha. Great video as always man, this made my morning.
It would be slightly better then chucking rocks in a circle. ;-)
@@ModernSelfReliance with you my friend, I have no doubts 😎
I took down a grain bin in France 30 years ago and learnt the words for nut, bolt and washer: "ecru, boulon y rendel!" I was the guy on the inside. Love what you do. It's really relaxing viewing and I always have a laugh. My allotment buddy Marco built a smoker like yours, his hasn't burnt down yet. Keep doing it your way, Kevin.
Love the patina! Repurposing is so satisfying and sort of honors the history and reignites the excitement that must have accompanied the original install decades ago on the farm.
Your creativity knows no bounds! What a great way to repurpose that grain bin!
True Blue
Of course you were gonna make a roof for your kitchen out of a grain bin. I wouldnt have thought anything less. Works darn well too. Another successful venture.
Farmers must love you guys, I could imagine normally they get stuck with one of those silos rusting away because they're too busy to haul it off themselves.
The Canadian brothers just keep banging them out good job guys, awesome videos.
Oh my gosh….Kevin…..😂. You intro had me laughing. These are so cool. I have to say I’m shocked you didn’t decide to use the 2nd one as a new “cabin”. 😉. I mean you have the opening in the center of the top…would be perfect for a chimney. Fireplace in the center will help evenly put out the heat. Would be cool if you could install some windows in the top for natural light. The snow would definitely slid off the roof in the winter. You are like those employees who worked for Disney at imagination land. There are no limits as to what you can build , how & with what materials. ❤. I love how you are always thinking outside “the box”. 😉😬✌🏼. PS…..you should totally sell cutting boards to us subs. I would totally support you & buy one!!!. You can surprise your wife & make her #1 of course I get to buy #2 signed by you on the back since I gave you the idea. 😬. Seriously I would totally buy one ‘ I’m sure there are a lot more who would also be interested . 😉. Kevin you should put a lift “cap” above the top opening. So if it does rain the cap deflects it ‘ doesn’t come inside the roof. You can put some hooks along the support post to hang various tool. Hot dog forks, frying pans etc. Heck you might even be able To attach a hammock between 2 of the support post. Turned out amazing!!! Let me know about my future cutting board . 😬😬😉
Kevin, that turned out so cool!! When you asked Don what it reminded him of all I could think of ( because of the patterns of rust/patina) is a big circus tent!! Sorry I did not see the Apollo 1
Amazing use of an old grain silo
Looks incredible
I just realized how much your videos are similar to the Red Green show, only everything you and your friends do works and you guys know what your doing.
You should totally use one of those round porthole style windows as your skylight! Maybe some air holes just below the window for airflow. And if you find out you need more support in the middle you could always use those curved 'angle iron' pieces to build a kind of 'outdoor umbrella' style support in the middle where you have one central log and a few angled supports attached below the window.
Always fantastic and creative ideas! I'd love to build one of these too once I can get myself some property so we can have a little community outdoor kitchen just like you guys!
Doing what we do, where we are with what we have. Who doesn't love this!!!! This is genius!
Property is so cool you have turned it into something really cool. Really enjoy the content never disappointed have a good weekend and stay safe Jimmy from North Attleboro Massachusetts
Love it. You asked for ideas. How about some strings of battery-powered LED lights, either around the circumference or radiating out from the central peak? In a big structure like that, they look nice even during the day.
That looks good and great recycle project!
I’m always amazed at the lengths you go to make things work according to your vision, and this one is a great one! Simple in design but far from simple in execution. Also another point for “the right tool for the job” with the giant steel easels 😁 that’s what I call them anyway.
No mention of the goose egg you likely got from losing that hammer mid-swing!? Ouch!
The hatchet could have been way worse.. those giant steel easels are called Grainbin jacks.. for some reason I own them.. I looked at renting them then got the opportunity to buy them... Because who doesn't need grainbin jacks.
Love the new cookout area. That’s a great cover out there. Great for shade or when its raining. You put that to great use. The ponds also looking really good. It’s nice and clear. Only thing that would make it look better is weed eating around it. It’s getting a little tall out there. A fireplace would be nice out there.
WOW!!!! This is amazing!! What a great idea!!
Nothing like a good laugh first thing in the morning. I was thinking about going into the light 😂
I love your channel so much Im an older viewer never built anything Im scared of power saws but Ive had to take a break but I have been building a barbie doll house, I am waiting for some product prices to go down...Ive made so mistakes along the way but live and learn.
Definitely gives the area a tropical look, like those circle huts you see on beaches. Cool. You could always paint some rust fighting paint on the outside surface, but I like the look of it as it is. You could add some 'free solar lighting' as well, maybe a small solar panel out the top of the roof or something.
You need the use the other grain bin for a tiny house. That's a build I'd like to see. I love how you repurpose things. Very cool.
This looks great! A wonderful reuse of something being discarded.
Plus, it's always fun watching you and Don "play with your nuts". 😄
Great addition to your home and your channel.
Thank you.
Be Excellent and Party on. 🤘🎸😎
I'd add some concrete to fix the posts in place, then bolt 'em all together so a bigger wind can't just steal it :D I'm pretty sure you'll nail it design-wise, and later on you could even host some weddings under it!
I think the kitchen roof looks cool.
This is amazing, excellent idea for repurposing resources! Out of all the home improvement and DIY stuff I watch, I love how realistic your channel is. It’s like one of my projects, only performed by someone with construction knowledge! 😂
I love all the creative projects you guys do .
Very inspiring to see your creations !! Seeing opportunities and building materials out of recycled items is awesome! 🎉😊
Now you need some lighting on the interior circle and a way to lift or open your "window" to vent out the heat and smoke... Great job, guys!
Add a couple Hammocks between the posts would be a great addition for those nice breezy Summer evenings
Man i wish i could edit winter to spring that quick right now. ;)
The king of reclaim does it again!
Maybe use the remaining space under the “Grainbinzebo” for a picnic table?
Awesome video again Kevin.
Morning Kev, Chris & Don² ❤
20 seconds in and you have me laughing out loud twice already. 😆😂 Gonna watch the rest now!
I love this project! It looks amazing and there’s so much potential for upgrading - not that it really needs it, but string lights…a fireplace, etc. would be amazing! 👏🏻
Just a thought from an old fire insurance investigator.Your rusty metal canopy is the perfect host for grease laden vapors derived by your outdoor cooking.Without scheduled maintenence the airborne grease will accumulate in the dome, leaving it subject to flash fires.
This often is the case in diner fires caused by not changing the grease traps in the canopy above the grill.Just a friendly reminder.
Funniest intro yet. What Flavor is your kool-aid? Just a great way to start any Saturday. Big fan from Ottawa. 👵🐶🇨🇦🥰
At first glimpse, I thought you were going to build an amphitheater type structure, like Chris said, semi enclosed. A screen material around it would definitely help keep the bugs out, kind of like a screen enclosure without framework..lol 😂😅 Love what ya'll are doing ❤
Love the channel keep the content coming
A roof turbine would be a great idea, I love how repurpose things that would usually go to a landfill.
It is fine to meet more of the family! Don and your Dad appear to be brothers. I believe you might need more lateral support to stabilize those three posts. How about making it six posts plus lateral support?
Sorry but they’re not brothers. Both their names are Don. Lol.
@@jacquelinewells7575 Could be like Darrell and his brother Darrell? 😁
You could also use radiant propane heaters in the winter. Two or three of them should make it very comfortable. Good repurposing.
the intro makes me feel like i had a stroke, incredible i love it
What a cool addition. Love seeing Chris from another angle from his video. And the Dons. Yall are doing great for the fans. Your ideas are so creative.
Omg I would love just one of those Walnut cuts for a guitar body! With my Son passing away last week I've been planning a guitar dedicated to his memory.
Good Job kevin you and Don mister nailed it,
Just dropped in to wish you and your family a happy Canada Day holiday weekend filled with gentle seasonally appropriate weather and restful evenings together. Peace Kevin
I love the channel and outdoor kitchen space you made Kevin. I can not build nor adventure outside like I used due ne disable now. I am glad I found your channel thru Zack's channel and keep finding a home for old things. Because reclaim pieces are a piece of art with story to tell.
A safety and decorating idea:
put Pool Noodles of different colors all around the bottom of your “Grainzebo”. Just slice them once longways and slip them on! This will also protect, from the sharp, rusty corrugated metal, the heads of any giants who might stop by for a free fish dinner.😊
speechless,i can only say awesome !!! man you got some talent !
Don is an incredible blessing! Love your ideas!!!
That top on the geound would be perfect for the homless
Ditto on the "indoor" lighting, but also maybe some curved bench seating around the edge? If you wanted to be fancy about it, it could have shelves for storage.
Don seems like such a good friend
You always find and make some of the neatest things. I would love to get a small one for a shower.
I'd add a trellis wall with ivy along the back wall opposite the pond, and put in a couple lounging chairs.
Edit: Oh if you're going to add a fireplace I'd add natural stone wall with base cabinetry on either side, and a couple upper shelves to store some cooking supplies.
Also, stucco over the corrugated metal walls would make it look pretty slick. Add Copper Patina paint on the roof panels and the whole thing would look great.
Love it. I imagine you'll paint and add lights. I see an opportunity to make it look like a hovering flying saucer. 😅 Btw I don't think you have too many round things. If they were all the same size it might look strange but I think everything looks great.
I agree. Different sizes, different heights and different materials allow the same shape to make sense. (Like grouping flower pots for an eye-catching display!)
Looks great! Build a semi circle rocket stove bench.... somewhere warm to sit under there during the winter plus it would be awesome to see you build it!
I love the round and round and round and round, round and round you go.
I think you need to make a trip to Princess Auto and procure some lights for the Grainpollo off grid kitchen.
The second one is the perfect place to build it as it was on the farm, with the walls attached to the ground, nice wooden floor as you always make, and make it a living space, could be used as a hunting cabin or blind, the options are seemingly limitless.
Beautiful Kevin!! What a creative guy you are Kevin, love to watch you wonder and wander and BUILD! How was the fish? Tasty? Great job Wooded Beardsman!! How about add on walls for the winter/snow with warm fish cooking inside! Lovin it!! Go Team!!!!
A pizza oven in your rock fireplace would be awesome!
Add.lights and spice rack and a table chairs you make the chairs👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Fantastic idea some bug screening in the future would be an idea also for your sawmill how about an extended sheet metal nose and hang a 5-gallon pail to catch the sawdust and easily dispose of it in a compost pile saving on major cleanups.
A touch of paint and some led lights, done! 🏴 👍
But that is a really good idea now you’re out of the rain
couple coats of paint and some lights, and i think you should build some small Muskoka chairs and your off to the races,, i love you creativity and ideas, kevin you are an amazing builder keep it up and be carful love you channel
So cool! You guys are part Rube Goldberg and part MacGyver. Love your idea of screens on the sides.
As usual, you deliver amazing content. Keep doing what you do!
It looks great and marries in with everything around it nicely.
You come up with some of the craziest and coolest things 😂
Lighting around the inside for use when it’s not so bright out. I’m loving it you’ll be able to use it in winter also with some side curtains .
Thanks Kevin really enjoyed this one. Llove that you used the grain bin to make a shelter. Take care.
Hey Kev, give it a nice coat of Silver Paint then add lights to make it look like a spaceship. Make the lights Blink.
Bet there was "Cussin' with Kevin in the Forest" after that blow! ❤ Geat idea & beautiful, too!
My outdoor fire side entertainment for this beautiful Saturday night!! Love the channel. Hey to Don.
I think a stone pizza oven along with the fireplace would be cool. like one of those giant mountain lodge outdoor fireplaces with a pizza oven built into the side of it. Could make a firewood storage off to the side as well
Add a log beam from post to post To mount maybe outdoor fan and lights for the center isle 👍
Fireplace is cool and a Curved table between two of the posts would give you a place to eat without blocking the cooks table.
Ok... the Glass A-Frame WAS my fave build... til now! I think that outdoor kitchen grain bin cover is the coolest thing ever!!! Thanks for sharing and yes I will watch anything you do with that space.
The A-frame was a heck of a lot more work then this.
I'd want some storage built into the ceiling of that thing. Like, some shelves along the edges, at least. Maybe one of those bigger shelves that hang from the ceiling and can be lowered down when needed. Just somewhere that's going to be safe from the elements and most scavengers, to keep some shelf stable stuff (like that spice mix), some towels, and maybe a basic first aid kit. Could also store some pots and pans and plates and cups and utensils up there, you've got the space for it. Maybe a dedicated shelf for the battery and stringing some lights around the rim? I don't know, I'm sure you'll keep working at it and make it look nice, those are just my thoughts. 🙂 Great job as always! 😁
the humor was turnt all the way up in this one haha
Looks awesome, cant wait to see the finished product... Is anything ever finished lol
Cool I love it. A lot of things u do I can't because the soil is just rock
Really cool. Adding some lights around the interior of the bin that wrap around would be nice. Like leds or some. Then you could be out in the winter when there is not as much sun light.
Kevin you really have a brilliant mind. Another great build guys.
i think the wind turbine idea for the top hole would work great
Lights,really cool lights
Thanks for your vid 😇💟💟💟 Love and bless you all guys, Wow what beautiful good work 👍😁💪👌👏👏👏🐔 coop.
Good thinking it works perfectly for a roof.
Very cool and very practical, Kevin. I like your idea of a large fire pit at the edge of the roof.
Its so cool to watch these things take shape!!
