"Self-Reliance" is an 1841 essay written by American transcendentalist philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. It contains the most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes: the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow his own instincts and ideas. This channel will approach self reliance from a modern perspective. and will focus on various build projects using modern amenities, and tools to build a completely self reliant lifestyle.
Many people ask me where I am from and where I film my projects. I am from Northern Ontario, Canada, and live in an area where off-grinding is easy because I have lots of land to build on and experiment with different buildings and materials. Everything I do is to try to be more self reliant, and to depend less on others. But that doesn't mean I don't like working together with other people on projects. Knowing people who have skills is part of being self reliant, and trading skills is a great way to get more things done!

Nice work Kevin! The Chick-Inn looks awesome and should provide a nice cozy place for all your chickens to live :) I like how you strive to spend as little money on your projects as possible. I am very much the same way with how you plan and stash materials til you’re ready to build. One suggestion would be to use wood chips rather than straw for the bedding. It absorbs much better. Cheers from north Bay Ontario 😊

Nice chicken house. Pine shavings work well for bedding the turpentine in the chips helps keep mites and lice off your birds. Lice kinda likes straw. Wood as in a wood box in corner of yard for them to roll n natural parasite control. Thanks for sharing

Really nice build. Those are some lucky chickens! I would live in that coup. One thing, please wear a mask when you are in an enclosed area kicking up construction dust. I want to follow you for many years to come. Ops! Second thing, the window that leads directly into the coup needs wire to keep out predators. It would be easy for a fox to push it open and have a delicious chicken dinner.

But it is bought and paid in full before I got to me. And now I can make special wood boards that you can not but at Home Depot. I also shop @ Princess Auto but here Alberta Canada. A mans store that is what my wife calls it lol. You got keep a sharp watch out to keep them homeless one at bay or else they will move in . them lazy will move in and take over free power free heat lol

Great job Kevin, love the whole design. We have kept chickens for the last 12 years. One tip, chickens lay eggs according to how much sunlight they get. Summer = Tons of Eggs, Winter = Sad face. You can stimulate more egg production in winter by adding a lightbulb on a timer. More light, more eggs. Since you have power onsite, it should be an easy fix. Love the channel and all your positive content. Full stop

A little late to finding your videos - but having fun. BTW - in case you haven't already figured it out - chickens can't see in the dark (less rods & cones thing). That's why they put themselves away at dusk and like to roost high up to be more protected from predators at night. That's why they wouldn't go in the ducting - they couldn't see out - most chicken 'tunnels' are made of wire so they can see as they go.
