I build an authentic Japanese military spider fox hole with just a few basic tools including a small army shovel, some metal buckets, and some rough saw timbers to help create a safe place to sleep overnight in case of impending war.
A spider hole is mirrors the hole created by a trapdoor spider who will tunnel and then cover the top of the door to conceal itself.
A spider hole is usually shoulder-deep, and round, protective enough to camouflaged lid a solder from attack. A soldier will be able to stand upright and then fire a weapon without being overly exposed. A spider hole is different than a foxhole in that a foxhole is usually deeper and designed to hide or conceal a fighter.
A spider hole is usually hastily dug, whereas a foxhole is done with more care.
Spider holes were used during World War II by Japanese. Saddam Hussein during the Iraq war was captured hiding in a spider hole.

"Self-Reliance" is an 1841 essay written by American transcendentalist philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. It contains the most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes: the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow his own instincts and ideas. This channel will approach self reliance from a modern perspective. and will focus on various build projects using modern amenities, and tools to build a completely self reliant lifestyle.
Many people ask me where I am from and where I film my projects. I am from Northern Ontario, Canada, and live in an area where off-grinding is easy because I have lots of land to build on and experiment with different buildings and materials. Everything I do is to try to be more self reliant, and to depend less on others. But that doesn't mean I don't like working together with other people on projects. Knowing people who have skills is part of being self reliant, and trading skills is a great way to get more things done!
You should stow a “dig out kit” under the bed in the steel cylinder. Along with some water and a small supply of food. You know, in case you’re sleeping and the hallway caves in.
You could also build a small cabin over the new entrance.
Make it look old and abandoned.
Ooh. With a secret hatch to the bunker.
@@oakland2949 EXACTLY!
Brilliant idea!
put an old abandoned vehicle on top, and make the tunnel hatch the hood of the vehicle.
One of the only channels I watch adds in their entirety in hopes it gets you paid.
Just get youtube premium, its less than 50cent a day, once you try it you can never go back.
Even if i do something else, i make sure i do. Well done Mr LeClaire. Great Video, you are brilliant.
I always stress to other users how important it is to just spend the short time to watch the adverts. It’s money for something you both enjoyed and it doesn’t cost you anything but a few seconds.

Love the "Colin Furze ambition" line. I think many of us who watched that video series want to do the same thing, but the concrete cost alone is scary, let alone steel, excavation and build time
Concrete isn’t that bad as long as you got a deal
Cut more garage door sections so you can sleep stretched out, better sleep, you could paint the hatch camo to hide it better. Awesome and creative always entertaining Kevin
FYI plastic can be chewed open by mice and rats.....glass jars with tight fitting lids, or tins with lids with zip lock or resealable mylar bags inside are the way to go for that kind of storage.😉
We bought this shed at the beginning of July. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxe81Bz076USDt6sYU1rDcNa2LwCIKADgB It’s built now and just needs painting. The instructions were clear and concise. All the parts were there and in excellent condition.
who cares
Can’t get enough of the underground builds, please more!!! ❤❤
This is definitely a fun upgrade from the old container bunker you made a long time ago. It’s very satisfying seeing the shelves stocked with food as well! Only thing you’re missing is toilet paper 😉. Awesome video as usual keep up the good work.
This is so cool Kevin. Love the upgrade. Your mind must work 24/7 to come up with all these great projects that you create. And I absolutely love watching each and every one of them. I appreciate you sharing them with us. Take care.
This is so awesome! Once you get the water leaks under control and finish the inside with some paint, it's going to look great!!
Like it when he mentioned colim furze
Spiderhole to bunker it's a lot of fun
this build was really cool to see watched the whole playlist. I worry you are in an area where the ground water level changes seasonally cause of winter and will keep having issues with flooding and dampness unless there is a lot more waterproofing. In Canada we usually get big tubs of sealant even for concrete basements and cover the outside in it; you could get enough sealant for that build for like $30-40 at home depot
That’s so cool. You made lemonade out of lemons!
I think you need another section of garage door for your bed. You look extremely cramped.
This is so nice. You could lower the bed so there's more head space for you! OR weld a bed on the side so there's more room for your feet.😊
The Jeep ought to be a great addition to the property, especially considering you got to put use to something that otherwise likely wouldn't sell well.
The point with rat rods is more that it isn't particularly even built from 1 "car". It's actually very close to what you do in principle, what can I do with what I already have/ can find/ or can get as cheap as possible then make it cool. There are guys that will "restore" the paint but a lot see it as like painting a hardwood floor because it's got a stain that won't come out. Also my apologies if any of my comments have came off dickish, nothing but respect and admiration for the work you've done my man!
Pretty awesome! 1. What about a toilet? If you are stuck in there for days/weeks, you will need to go. 2. I would but a lock from the inside of the hatch if you are going to use it as a bunker to keep someone from coming in while you are sleeping.
Are you thinking of adding a composting toilet to this build? A 5 gallon bucket and sawdust would work in a certain capacity if you wanted to include one on the cheap. Also might be a cool idea to integrate a well build to this bunker.
Awesome video!!! This is what I am always excited about!!!
Good stuff man.. Sure woulda been nice to pressure wash and paint the inside of the tank before dropping it in the hole.. Add yourself a few more panels and you will have a queen size bed with sit up room.. feet towards the opening.. maybe nightstands on the sides...Like Granny's attic in a 5th wheel camper..
Its shaping up nicely.. Keep up the killer work there brother..👍👍
Seeing that shaft torn out so easily was a little sad remembering how it was dug buckets at a time by you and Don. Is that weird? I totally get the improvements needed for longevity, and it’s more satisfying to see it done with more than just structure in mind.
Ha! Colin Furze energy! I agree!
Glad that you’re enlarging everything too, it should make lots of activities easier😆 more room for activities!
Do you have a plan yet for filtering incoming air that might be radioactive? If you get hit with fallout, surviving the blast is irrelevant if you don't filter out the fallout particles in the air.
Love the spider hole. I was wondering why you didn't put the rubber water barrier between the earth and your boards. Like they do when building an underground basement. I think it would help keep your wood from rotting and keep the water out. Just a thought. Keep inventing. God bless ❤
When you had the lights on white it looked like you were in a music video from the 90’s😂
Yea! Happy to see what you are going to do. I will be watching.
I know your gonna read this alot. but I'd get some amo cans to store the foods like chips penutbutter and anything mice and rodents can chew through.. As those little buggers can smell the food and chew through plastic and bangs with no issue.. By putting those kinds of foods in a amo can its not only preventing them from being able to chew through them but also prolongs the food longer when you ad ox observers and have proper fitting lids as there typically water and air tight.. Agin I know your gonna here that a lot.. but anyways encase you don't ... also this was a cool build I cannot weight to see what you have next up your sleeve.. thank you for creating and sharing this with us..
To be the best, you must start from the beginning, just like Colin Furze. you will get there one day, with persistence.
before you buried the cylinder I'm surprised you didn't put screws through the ring's existing holes into the timber frame
It's awesome like always but I would probably do a bed lengthwise so you can fully stretch out and do some small bookcase style cabinet on the back wall right next to a bed
Are you able to add more garage doors to the cylinder so that you can lay down length wise? That way you would not need to bend your knees when you sleep. The benefit of multiple doors would be that you could stack them when you are not sleeping to keep it the same profile of your current setup
He needs a longer bed. 😂
I think you need more of those panels so you can lay down the long way instead of cross way letting you stretch out. Or put in hooks to hang a hammock or two in your steel tube, glad you started using the excavator to dig the hole out.
Wow, you never give up that hatch is definitely gonna need some sort of seal to keep the water out😮
1:28 POV: You are a corpse in a coffin buried in a forgotten cemetery that is getting turned into a Wendy's parking lot
Maybe build a gazebo over top of the entrance.?. It’ll help disguise the spider hole and keep moisture out.?.🤷🏻♂️
So, with enclosed areas, moisture is an issue. You can run a dehumidifier down there. And, create clean water too...
Vienna Sausage - my dad called them Monkey Peter's lol.
Bushcraft dump truck, sick! Should put a dozer on the front, strip the back end to make it like a truck bed. 🔥
pro tip for ventilation ... use fire... a candle will for air up so make 2 vents and place a candle under one and it will circulate air
I love your “holy moly” expression- feels like home. Yes indeed everyone loves tang!! Fabulous underground apartment!!!
This is an awesome upgrade of the spider hole Kev. Keep upgrading this one to make it comfortable.
I'm not sure if you've brought this up in the past, but couldn't a tiny wood burning stove help to dry the area out pretty well?
A weeping tile is a great idea though, you could make one like a french drain with clean rock around your drain pipe wrapped in a geotextile, you could also add a bucket as a sump basin and make it a bit lower, and then have a small pump to evacuate water if it ever starts rising.
A friend of mine and I built an underground box about the same size under my parents backyard when I was 12 while they were gone for two weeks one summer! We stole wood from the mill, 😂We knew nothing, we lifted the grass off and placed it back on after we finished the build! We got it done before they got back! We didn’t think anything about water, lol! My dad came in after dinner one night about a week after they got back, he had been out watering the lawn, after a few days you could see the shape of the box where the water was running down into the box! Boy did I get my arse whipped! 😂😂
Nice Lil addition. Wonder if it would be better to cut a few more garage pannels. And make a longer sleeping ledge. And maybe box in under it. And hinge a door pannel. And have storage under it.
Why not make a pair of full-length beds in that steel cylinder ? Use a steel pipe and weld hangers on both ends , and legs that can fold in when you raise it up and latch it . That way there's room for you and your wife with enough room to have your daughter lay across the top or bottom of the beds !
Glad to see you're not giving up on the bunker....Hopefully you're right about the water .
So is Kevin going to open a themed bed and breakfast with all the odd sleeping places?...
You made a make shift flow hood, nice. I’d be wary of mold. Might put a dehumidifier down there too🐸
You Amaze Us! WOW!
Gonna have to wait a couple hundred years for that extra degree or two.
I really like your modifications to the jeep to use your trailer hopefully you hooked up the battery to your vehicle’s charging system so it keeps battery charged when you’re driving or running the engine in jeep .
Now you need to drill holes the back hatch of jeep so you can keep back hatch closed and have quick connect fittings on both sides of hatch so you can still use the door when not using the trailer not hard to do
I just leave the gate open while using the trailer... Really nice view for backing up
What a great upgrade! I can’t believe how well that fit! Thanks again for great content. Enjoyed Water World, too!
awesome as always.thanks for sharing and taking us along
i like your saying "colin furze ambition, but not the money" that probably describes a lot of us.
@ 8:35 yeah! the world famous DON is on the job, go Don go, you are the man !!
I really like this show. Thanks Kevin 🐸
i think you got a good plan that otter work real good to remedy the spring water issues... NOW, it'd be really cool if you could somehow connect your other "habitats" to your bunker/spider hole... make a whole complex/ network of it all...thanks for sharing your projects... it's always fun to watch your videos
Love me some Red Baron pizza 🤤, and the word you're looking for is patina, the oxidation color that occurs on metal surfaces, definitely looking forward to the next video 😁🤙🤙🤙
love these underground builds
Good morning from Minnesota USA! Fun episode!!
My suggestion for an easy water intrusion fix is a sump and a bucket/ pump. Much less digging! Thanks for the video and keep it up!!!
A sponsor like Mountain House for storage food would be a good idea, in my opinion, for the competition of the fall out bunker.
Three times I laughed out loud.
1- saw in kitchen.
2- mechanically separated pork, "that sounds delicious"
3- "Anybody wanna have a seizure?"
Another great video.
I enjoyed your tang program. Most excellent.
You do some amazing things. Great work .
wow Tang I haven't seen or had that in a LONG time but it's extremely good from what I remember lol
He's gotta realize (maybe the hard way) that the moisture will cause the Mason jar lids to rust. I wonder what insect will eat through the cookie packages? Oreos, lol.
@@brendag2891 I was thinking thing wondering how he's going to prevent a squirrel or chipmunk or w/e from going down there and eating up his goodies that aren't in a can
@@TheJeracuda I know, right? Lol
Fun!! I hope you get that corner of the hatch figured out ❤
You need to spray MEL-ROL waterproofing on the walls on the outside concrete or wood or whatever is underground to keep the water out! Then on the top of the concrete before you backfill it in! It’s about 75-100 a 5 gallon tub!
You could put a box to cover the entrance of the bunker waterproof box to cover the door of the bunker.
I always enjoyed watching this man work
Nice bedroom!!!😊🎉❤
It I s so much fun watching your builds. You make it look so easy! I would need to build a tree house since my place floods, but I sure wish I could build a bunker. I really need a passively heated and cooled place to stash my preps and canned goods😅!
Dig out the entire area of the tarp. Then use the tarp to line the ground and walls, then start over.. just a thought
I liked this video. One suggestion. You might want to get a melt can( the kind that popcorn is sold in) or a tote. Need to keep mice away from paper wrapped food.
Love the weeping drain idea. Might consider a filtration system and maybe a small storage tank instead of just running it down hill. Then maybe you could use some of the water. Turn a problem into a solution. Another back-up failsafe you could do for your bunker is dig a little hole and drop a sump pump in it on its own battery backup... then if/when water rises up or drips in it will hopefully collect there and be pumped out.
I just watched zacks video and i decided 2 watch your latest video first. U definitely have a new fan 👍🏼. Im going 2 watch your video for water world 2.0 next.
great entertainment Canada!
Definitely add a well down there use the weeping tile to lead to it that will give you a water supply
And add a roliet
A coat of paint would have done wonders to that steel container.
I drove to Calgary from Montana, but am drawing a blank on the bank with a red sign. All that comes to mind is BMO or the Canadian maple leaf, like the flag. Some body please refresh my memory!
Scotia Bank
Awesome! I love the new improved whatchamacallit...lol 😂😅 I hope you can get the water drip issue figured out, this build can be improved on in several ways. Love what you're doing 😊
That looks pretty cool. Why didn't you put your bed the long way instead of across. Aren't you kinda cramped in there. Anyhow, it looks like you could stay in there for an extended time if you had to. Great video.
Never let failure detour you.❤👍🤯
Really cool. Thank you for sharing
Great video Kevin!
Great channel man! Good work!
Control the water with swales running from top of bunker outwards....to bottom of hill. This will drain faster and farther away from ug structure.
9:26 dude that was perfection
I really love the problem solving and enginnering showed here 😎... and also you got certain charisma you know? Greetings from cuba
More waterproof than Oceangate's Titan
Nice shelter that way you can hide from Chris, rotten meat foul odors LOL
Awesome! Great content!
The faster you get that drain tile in the gap under your floor the better.
Nice improvements on the bunker. I, for one, would not be able to sleep in the 5 foot pipe, but that's just me. Hope you find a solution for the hatch door. What are the chances of getting a shipping container or an old dumpster down there for some added space?
"Amazing? How did this work so well?" jinx you owe me a coke.
Might be worth giving it an anti mold treatment and maybe run a dehumidifier?
Very cool!
Run bed length wise of tank....install false floor.....storage under floor for food or tools etc... Much like a submarine.
The tarp should have been little high above the structure , so that no rain water ever seeps below the tarp n leaks into the structure
It sounds like the chat wants you to build an entire underground complex.
