    The archaeological dig at Göbekli Tepe in southeast Turkey is revealing many more remarkable discoveries dating back nearly 12,000 years. Hugh Newman takes a look at what has recently been put on display at Şanlıurfa Museum, and is joined by Andrew Collins to discuss the huge boar statue that has red, white and black pigments on it. Hugh also takes a look at a new academic paper from the site manager Dr. Lee Clare which details new finds published for the first time (in August 2024). Hugh also finds a possible winter solstice alignment in Enclosure D based on these new discoveries.

      From a Şanlı Urfa-based internet news site:
      It was claimed that the excavations in Göbeklitepe, which shaped the history of humanity and is described as the ‘zero point of history’, were stopped by global powers. While the allegations became TT on social media platforms, Müslüm Çoban, Secretary General of Şanlı Urfa Chamber of Guides and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of TUREB (Union of Tourist Guides of Turkey), said: ‘It is a good thing that Göbeklitepe is followed with interest by everyone, but of course there is also this; misinformation of the public affects Göbeklitepe negatively, of course.’
      Some allegations are circulating on social media. There have been posts that some people from abroad have prevented this excavation, of course this is not true. These are geothermal radars taken during Klaus Schmidt's time and the excavation was progressing very well. In the meantime, it is not the right approach to extract the finds there very quickly and put them in front of humanity, which Klaus Schmidt emphasised a lot with the excavation team. Because even in its current state, the finds there have changed the history of mankind and increased everyone's interest in Göbeklitepe.
      There are olive trees planted around Göbeklitepe. These have also been mentioned a lot with conspiracy theories. Definitely, this is also wrong, it is based on a wrong perception. Because it is known that these trees were planted by the field owners probably in 2005-2007 because the fee they would receive in expropriation was less when the field was empty. There is this; some parts of the excavation are under the trees, but we know that olive trees can be uprooted and planted in another area or in areas outside the protected area. In this respect, the information that these trees were deliberately planted to prevent the excavation is also very wrong. They are trees planted by the field owners in order to get more money during the expropriation phase of the first field. In this respect, all these conspiracy theories circulating on social media are false. Of course, there is also this; it is a good thing that Göbeklitepe is followed with interest by everyone, but there is also this; of course, misinformation of the public affects Göbeklitepe negatively. But Göbeklitepe has really changed the history of humanity and will continue to do so. As Klaus Schmidt always says; Göbeklitepe encourages us to ask the right questions.

      Prof. Dr. Necmi Karul, Head of Göbeklitepe Excavation Committee, stated that they started the 2024 excavation season about 3 weeks ago. Stating that they are working with a protection-oriented working strategy in Göbeklitepe, Karul underlined that they will continue excavations under the protection roof this season.
      Karul said, ‘As you know, the world's oldest known painted sculpture was unearthed in this area during last year's excavations. This statue, which depicts a wild boar in realistic dimensions, has already been exhibited at the Şanlıurfa Archaeological Museum with its renewed display. Similarly, excavations continue in Karahantepe. Although we are in the first days of the season, we have encountered new building remains and we continue our intensive work in this area.’

      @@incig In a couple of years a pine forest was planted on the site. Is this what they call "protection"? Earlier in history if they wanted to break big blocks of a castle and palaces to make disappear from the face of the Earth they planted trees on the ruins and it did job in 2-3 hundred years.

    Tourism trumps research and exploration...excavations have stopped and will not be resumed, leaving 95% of the site unexplored, and abandoned for the foreseeable future (they say: "it is for the next generation to pursue, because we are not going to pursue it". Who managed to halt the excavations? Newly planted trees and concrete poured all over the site insure that no more excavations will be allowed.

    My puzzlement is this: so many of the t-columns and other sculptures exhibit quite a degree of degradation. Since I have been led to understand that the whole entire site was METHODICALLY BURIED APPROXIMATELY 11,000 YEARS AGO, it would seem logical to conclude that this DEGRADATION occurred during a very very long historical period when the site was used and EXPOSED to the elements....possibly thousands of years? Wouldn't burial have gone a long way toward PRESERVING THE SITE?? So.....why are we seeing such advanced degradation and weathering???

  • @markd3250
    @markd3250 20 дней назад +9

    Sometimes the obvious is overlooked because people try way too hard to come up with something mystical or religious, when in fact the first thing to consider is the ordinary and mundane. Have any of you experts considered that the H symbol, like the animal symbols, is also referring to an actual object? There's an unusual feature of the H in that the vertical sides are so thick and wide, and consistently so, with the cross beam in the middle being thinner. The carved images that are being called a C or V symbol, look very much like pieces of rope or vine, and they are exactly the right thickness to fit in the middle of the H. What if the H symbol is an instruction symbol, that refers to a gate or blocking device in that shape, that can be lifted or dropped in say, a water channel or chute to direct and control water flow or the traffic of animals? It could have been made of wood, which would make it easy to move around. A rope goes around the center cross beam (which would give it a C or V shape with people holding each end), and each end is pulled on to lift or lower the H block. If you want to clean out a pen or enclosure, and that enclosure contains the animals on that pillar carving, like snakes, scorpions, boar, etc., then you clear them out through a channel first by lifting an H block, then dropping it behind them so people can safely go in and clean or service the enclosure.
    This site has nothing to do with religion. Everything about it speaks of organization and management, along with directions on what goes where and how to manage it. This site has all the appearance of a production facility, for the breeding and care of animals. You have flooring that can be washed down, chutes that can direct the movement of animals, and beyond all that is something else to consider. The number of carvings of all these different animals indicates a great amount of knowledge and familiarity with all of them, which indicates a people who traveled over very great distances. These aren't just images painted on the walls. They actually had all these creatures there, and built all this to feed, breed and manage them.
    Undoubtedly there would have had to have been wood and probably reeds used there, which of course wouldn't survive; all we have left are the stones.

      but why all of these T shaped things, I mean what for? there is no known logic ( to us) for this site at all. Also image all the effort to burry this all. Why was it so inportant to hide this place....

    • @markd3250
      @markd3250 14 дней назад +1

      @@inorogNL The T pillars would have supported a roof structure of some kind. Poles going up from the sides of each enclosure to the tops of the T, and held in place with ropes or vines wrapped around the ends of the T. Thatch, reed mats, or some kind of covering would go over the top.
      My personal theory is the original structure was built by Noah and his family, and this is where they took all the animals from the ark. They used the original mating pairs from the pre-flood world to breed additional mating pairs, and took those out to places around the world. This site is only 15 miles (24 Km) north of Haran, which would have been the shipping out point. Haran was hugely important in the Bible and the ancient world.
      Since this site would literally be the center of the world for all the generations born after the flood, either they buried it to prevent any one family line from claiming it, or they just decided to bury it after they were done using it for what it was built for. Haran was still in use all the way down to the time of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

    In recent years a pine forest was planted on the site outside the fresh concrete pavements. Is this what they call "protection"? Earlier in history if they wanted to break big blocks of a castle and palaces to make disappear from the face of the Earth they planted trees on the ruins and it did job in 2-3 hundred years.

    Some years back, a Canadian (I think it was) ngineer set out an intriguing proposal for the Pictish images you briefly showed, known as the double-disc and z-rod. And his hypeothesis is that it is an equinoxtal symbol, if I recall. He made at least one youtube video about it. Because he had no credentials in any field that counts with Britain’s archaeology/history scholarly community, they have just totally,mstudiously ignored it. There is a lot of tosh and mumbo-jumbo and fantasy talked about the Picts, so I can understand they would be cautious, but I always thought it deeply unscientific that they just totally ignored it. No argument against it, no effort to say why it might lack credibility, just behaving as if it didn’t exist - when it is clear that the guy can demonstrate elegantky why his hypothesis should be considered..

      Why are photos of all these things not online to be viewed? We are allowed one side of one pillar, two central pillars, selected statues and a few fragments. Then there's everything they won't excavate.
      If we could all look, worldwide, we could make some sense of it.

    In Egypt, it was Ammit 'Eater of the dead'. Ammit's head was a crocodile, which wouldn't be found in highlands Turkey. A Boar would.
    Was the enclosure the site of 'judgement of the dead person's life'? Would the person be honoured, or discredited and left to the vultures outside the boundary of Gobleki Tepe?

    Great video, but it looks to me that statue of a boar is really a hippo - do not the tusks curve up from the lower jaw, and dont go farther than the bridge of the snout? Also, the ears are small, and that snout seems rather short/stubby?With red ochre paint on the mouth, and black/white on the rest of the body, and its fierceness says (to me) its more likely an attacking hippo, not a wild boar which is much less easily riled up and not too many unprovoked human deaths as there are still today by hippos? So, when would there have been a river nearby, if not the headwaters? Also, and pardon me, but I couldn't understand your descriptive word for the very "modern"looking male statue with the "v" neckline? Wonderful visit to that Odessa museum, and commentary; thanks! Looking forward to your next presentation.

    Great tour and commentary. Are you familiar with the Mazzaroth? As described in the Biblical book of Job? Described also in Psalm, Isaiah, and Habakkuk. Where astronomical mapping describes animals, some similar to ones depicted, such as the lion, scorpion/snake, sheep/ram, and fish. Which the descriptions of Biblical origin story predate the symbols of Zodiac/astrology and polytheism, though would make sense given the order of Biblical account, which differs from secularist assignments of polytheism occurring first. Chuck Missler had studied it, and compared the original Hebrew, some uploads of his studies are found on RUclips. And I also find it interesting how the statues are circumcised.

      Noice. Shalim (Šalām, Shalem, Ugaritic: 𐎌𐎍𐎎, romanized: ŠLM) is a pagan god in Canaanite religion, mentioned in inscriptions found in Ugarit (now Ras Shamra, Syria). William F. Albright identified Shalim as the god of the dusk and Shahar as the god of the dawn.

    Wonder if the boar statue with the cavity in the mouth was for inserting a beating heart from a sacrifice. It would give off the most ghoulish sight to see that carving with a dripping bleeding heart. Be curious to know is any genetic material was found on the boar.
