    That makes sense. So the difference between secondary intention vs tertiary intention is that secondary healing is never approximated via mechanical action, the tissue just builds up until it’s closed. And 3rd intention is when you allow the tissue to build up/or at least to a point that it’s easier to initiate a primary healing action via surgical sutures. It’s called tertiary bc there is a pause in that healing process where waiting for the wound to heal just a little bit before closure is needed. Am I correct

      Yes! Secondary is left to heal "from the inside out," while tertiary will eventually be approximated when it is appropriate :) --Meris

    My daughter had a deep hole from an abdominal surgery done 4weeks age. Still draining serosanguinous thick fluid. We’re told to do wet to dry dressings. The wound has tunneled 6 inches according to the HH nurse. I’m concerned this is not healing as it should. Please advise.

    Could you please explain a bit more why a saline-soaked gauze is needed? I am just not really understanding on the isotonicity. Thank you.

      Because it would be like actual fluid from the body… has sodium like the body would. Keeps it moist, clean, and healthy until it can be fixed.
