Loving the puzzle advent. Hoped Bailey enjoyed the escape room today! I know she was hoping for a Potter escape room, but we unfortunately already had one, we may randomly host it again one summer but that's unlikely. If she'd like to go over the riddles sometime, I'd be happy to share them. Also get in touch with the teen librarian if Bailey and Jacob would like to help create our next escape room, we'd love the help and could use their creativity!
Christopher is the perfect amount of different lol. Not a bad way! A very good way! Not many ppl can pull of the magician personality without seeming like a weirdo. He so kinda, smart, & a great daddy. He seems like a real nice fella!
We have been doing fruit and veg gardening for a few years, after renovating our house. We found a potato skin peel about 2 inchs/5cm long in the composter that had sprouted. We planted it not knowing about hilling and got over a pound of potatoes. What i did learn is that they are nitrogen fixers and love blood, fish and bone. It wasn't on our list of things to grow this season but was really exciting to see the results in our science pot. Just make sure to cover any visible potatoes with soil. Don't eat the green ones exposed to the sun. Cut any flowers so it can put the energy into making potatoes. After about 120 days of planting, or when the plant is dying back, cut the green plant to the soil and harvest the potatoes 10 days later. No need to water after cutting. The roots will shoot its energy to the potatoes. The skins will also start to harden off. In our other science pot, we re grew leeks. Cut about an inch off the base of a shop bought leek and put it in water so it just covers the base. Get the kids to replace or top up the water until it has roots about 1 inch long and plant in a tub. You can keep cutting down to the soil once about 12 inches tall or leave it to fully grow. Baby leeks are more like a cross with spring onions (scallions). I am from London, UK but my fav YT'ers from your area are Epic Gardening in San Diego and CaliKim Gardening and DIY in South California. What i didn't expect the kids to be interested in was the wormery that i built in Feb 2021 from a black storage container 45 x 30 cm so about 18 inches x 12 inches in old money. We collected the red worms (a mix of standard red wrigglers and tiger wrigglers) from the garden. They usually are found near vegetation or under trees and are nearer to the surface than earth or "slow" worms, which are usually about 6 inches down. Earth worms aerate the under ground old soil and create the drainage systems, where as the red wrigglers, who are slighter smaller and move more live higher up in the soil layer eating the fallen leaves or old plant material at the top. They are also great at eating uncooked, non acidic, veg food scraps. They also love use coffee grounds for nitrogen and ground up egg shells for calcium. We started off in Feb this year with 20 red worms collected. When we got to about 200 worms we transferred about two handfuls to the main composter and then subsequently added handfuls to the bedding area. In the UK, they sow down eating and breeding when it gets colder. Fun facts about worms that kids love: Worms have both female and male sexual organs. They can live up to 8 years. They also have 5 hearts! If a worms bum is cut off, no worries. It grows back! When a worm lays and egg, it's not an egg, it's called a cocoon! They are semi transparent, with a yellow orange tint. Snail cocoons are slightly bigger and are like a milky white and are normally laid together like turtles. Baby worms are cute and are as little as 1cm when hatched! Worm castings is actually worm poo! Garden shops sell this stuff as a premium fertiliser! You can also make worm tea as a fertiliser. Excess water from a wormery should be thrown away. It's not actually worm tea. It's acidic from rotting veg and worm wee. Ever see a curly wurly hill on grass after it rains? It's not worm poo but the worms trying to burrow out to get oxygen to breathe. Hence, "early bird, catches the worm". You also see it on the beach too with razor clams and sea worms. I really love teaching the kids about the eco system of the garden and how it is similar and different to other creatures both in the dirt or in the sea. They also get to understand how it works with growing food.
I miss having a fresh Christmas tree. Unfortunately I'm allergic to christmas trees. But, it's always so uplifting to see the wonder on the faces of the younger kids. It really shows how special these type of moments are and will be carried with them for a long time.
I love you all!!.. such a wonderful day!.. please tell Bailey how proud I am of her accomplishment, and each of the boys are so smart and clever.. good job Mom and Dad👍🥰🎄🎄✨
Fascinating! I have a pretty bad bee allergy and just make sure to carry epi pens but never considered getting immunotherapy to build up immunity to bee venom. I learn something from so many of your vlogs!
Yesterday I read somebody’s comment saying Duncan gives off major stoner vibes and after seeing him wear a beanie and saying “I love Christmas space million” confirms it
Bailey is so brave, getting a shot every month even though she had a fear of them before that! i can’t imagine doing that, especially at her age. she’s so strong 💪
@@Madis_vlogz yeah its immunotherapy, basically they are just giving her doses of a specific amount bee venom each month to slowly make her more immune to bees so she wont have to worry about having a life threating reaction from a bee sting. It's not like vaccines though.
My dog who is only trained to sit couldnt care less about the Christmas tree, maybe have the less breakable ones down low and more breakables one up high, we have a bell that we put in the bottom ti scare off the dog if she gets into it.
Yay Bailey! I get immunotherapy too, but for 3 allergies, so three shots every time. Yikes! As you can imagine, shots don't really bother me anymore either, haha!
Christopher's advent calendar is the best😂 Never fails to make me laugh out loud! I just have to say how much you guys' Vlogmas means to me! I am a college student and live about 3.5 hours from my family alone in a tiny studio apartment. My family is so important to me, they are really like my best friends, and this time of year it is especially hard to be away from them. The time between Thanksgiving break and finals is always brutal, but I know that for about 30-45 mins a day I can watch the Ballingers (including Colleen's vlogs) and laugh and feel joy and connection. So THANK YOU!❤️❤️
I have the Lego Advent and I look forward to Jacob doing his because I might have been a wee bit confused on a few! All the Advents calendars are great. However, Christopher’s is next level amazing 🤪
My grandma and I would take the potatoes that were on the way out or sprouting, we'd quarter them and then plant the quarters in separate holes (a few inches apart). We'd then just let them do their thing and once the plants got big, we'd dig them out. (Be careful if you use shovels, but if you do ding them with a shovel, you can use those ones to start your next crop.) We live in N.W. Washington, right on the Canadian border, so we get more rain and different weather. I'm not sure how the different weather between my state and yours would effect the growing of potatoes but I hope you guys find some things that work! Carrots, corn, sweet pears, pumpkins and cucumbers are all pretty easy vegetables to grow. They yield quite a bit for a 99 cent package of seeds too. :) Gardening is a great skill to have and I have many great memories with my family in the garden.
