A small electric current is passed through the saw. Should your hand come it I contact with it, some of that current will be used and this will be detected by the system. The saw will then retract into the table extremely quickly and a stopper will be launched into the saw blade to stop it.

Because the saw moves at such a high speed it has this piece that absorbs the energy, it has to be replaced every time you use it which is about 60-80$ and it can sometimes damage the saw blade which is at minimum 80$ and if it is a specialised blade can cost anywhere up to 210, I would say 90-120 is the average, closer to 120-150 if it is on a bandsaw or has a double blade

It's called a saw stop, and they are good for educational places, but they can be touchy. If the wood has a high moisture content, it will trigger the saw stop. Best thing to do is always act like there is no safety and proceed with caution. Newer saw stops have gotten better about moisture in wood which is good. Lots of people have kept their fingers thanks to them. If your saw stop activates, it needs to be replaced, and the blade should be replaced as well. Even if the blade looks undamaged.

Another reason to not do this on purpose: it breaks the saw and depending on the type, the stopping mechanism, if you set it off. All saw stopping mechanisms like these have a high chance of damaging the saw blade. Some saw stopping mechanisms rely on an explosive charge that basically breaks the whole thing and drops the blade down into the table, and can only go off once, then you'd have to open the whole thing up and fix everything and replace the charge if you want to get it back up and working with the saw stop. The kind in this video uses a block of aluminum and a spring, which is resettable, but not necessarily as reliable as the explosive charge one, due to the fact that it's relying on an aluminum block to stop a speeding saw, and doesn't drop the saw down into the table.

However, depending on what kind of saw it is, you can adjust the sensitivity of the detection system as needed, for different materials. It's a called a SawStop and they're pretty accurate. The mark you'll get from hitting the blade is similar to a paper cut. Problem is, every time the stop is activated, a gear will mangle itself and sometimes the saw blade so that you cant get cut. Cost about 200$ each time it goes off and takes a heck of a lot of time to reinstall.

As someone who works constantly around wood, it really is best to just act like everything and every mistake can kill you, because it can. These aren't a joke, I've heard so many stories of blades exploding randomly or because the safety measures were activated. It stops the blade, but that blade is holding A LOT of energy. Stopping it is one thing, whether the blade remains whole is something else entirely.
