How to Fix that HORRIBLE Trim at Your Door..

  • Hey Gang! A little different style video today! Be sure to hit the like button if you like this style so we can make more for ya in the future! We'd love to put out more of these where we're tackling unique challenges that there aren't very many videos on!
In this specific video we're trimming out this front door, specifically, the side light. This is a detail that we think it's pretty botched in a lot of older homes and this is how we tackle it. This doorstop trim on the floor ties the entire area together and really distributes the mass of the front door from the top to the bottom and gives it a nice even and "planted" look. Let us know what you think or how you'd tackle it, respectfully of course. Thanks for watching and we'll see ya in the next one!

I like both the short and long videos. As long as the description of the video has all the details of the different jobs you showed in it, that's good so I can go back if I need to when it comes time for me to do a similar job.

Agreed, the short ones are great and the long ones are too. If I had to pick one a short video covering 1 topic is preferred though!

Love watching the videos... I appreciate all of the details that you demonstrate and explain. My home was custom built by several incredible carpenters, and the finish work that they did is absolutely amazing. After several years in the home, I still find detail work that just makes me stop and look. Thank you for taking the time to show that craftsmanship that is NOT very common in today's homes.

I like both formats, longer for full projects and tying multiple tasks together, and short for specific tasks that could come in handy with our own remodels (not that the longer videos haven't helped immensely). The solutions you guys come up with for these one-off/oddball issues are excellent. Always a job well done! Also, congrats on the 100K+ subscribers, well deserved!

I've been a replacement door installer for the last 20 years and I like the way you solved that problem. As you suggested it works well with wide flat moldings used for the mull posts and transom to hide component connections. I've run into a related problem because many of the houses built in my area over the last. 30 years used Peachtree doors which are about 1/4" shorter than doors made today. I've been using cabinet scribe because it's 3/4 x 1/4 with 1 rounded edge and has the added bonus if reinstalling the existing casing it can raise it up the 1/4 needed to cover having to lifting the casing off the floor to get the correct reveal at the top of the door.
    Keep up the good work.

Paul, I am 73 and been doing DIY all my life. Learned a lot of things the hard (and costly) way. All your little tips, tricks, and advice (and colorful expressions) are "money". And when your son says, "send it", it reminds me of back in the Army and calling in a SPOTREP, when the TOC would say, SPOTREP Send it! Anyway, I'm now addicted to Stud Pack how to videos. Keep'em coming!

Excellent video. Nice professional touch that you added instead of a typical caulk job.
It's crazy to think about the thousands of dollars people pay for a remodel that's all a magician's trick of caulking and shimming.
When a job is done like this it's easy to spot the difference.
I did something similar with a floating floor and ran the molding across the full span of the entryway. The full molding against the aluminum threshold really stood out.

I used stop similarly in my master closet, where the new walls met the existing finished textured vaulted ceiling (holy adjectives, Batman!). Tidied things up nicely and avoided a big pain trying to tape the corner and redo the texture. It tied in beautifully with the freshly painted beams in the closet.
