- Four-time teen champion Tony Duncan (Apache/Hidatsa/Arikara/Mandan) of Mesa, Arizona, captured his first adult title at the 21st Annual Heard Museum Hoop Dance Championship Contest on February 6. In fact, four brothers from the Duncan family won or placed during the world championship. An estimated audience of 10,000 came to cheer on one or more of their favorites from a roster of 43 hoop dancers from the U.S. and Canada. The Jay Kahn Memorial Fund sponsors the youth competition prizes and the Arizona Commission on the Arts is a supporter of the contest.
I came across by chance and was instantly mesmerised. The Indian dance was familiar from watching Hollywood films years ago. But this had a different dimension. The stamina! The sheer concentration! The imaginative artistry! Thank you Duncan, Tony - wherever you are.
A true artist, thank you Tony for this most wonderful entertainment, I never get tired seeing and hearing you dance.
I never get tired of watching this performance. The chanting, drumming, and dancing are just beautiful!

I suoi antenati si staranno rivoltando nelle "Tombe"
I loved watching and listening to this. I'm born and still living in Puget Sound and I'm afraid I don't know anything about the Navajo culture or their history. Which brings this question to mind. Is the Hoop Dance part of the Navajo history? You did the dance beautifully keeping in rhythm with the drums. I wonder what it was really like to be a Navajo before inventions like the car. Or better yet...before the pioneers arrived. I'll bet you're a good story teller. Thank you for sharing.
Tony duncan is Apache.

Is the the traditional dance or a modern version of the traditional?
