@@FigsForFunSA it doesn't end when they graduate from university, it goes on even when they're job hunting, 500 people would come in for an interview and a very small number would get accepted, they literally fight from school until they retire, it just stresses me even more

Say I was born in Korea, but I hated school. Did terrible in it. However, what I did enjoy, was engineering and programming. Say I self taught myself all the way through high school then even beyond high school and decided not to go to a university. Then, by two years after graduating (or not graduating) high school, I’m a genius software engineer that has multiple interesting projects to back it up. What’s stopping me from getting a great job as a software engineer or even an entrepreneur of a tech startup?
The most genius people I know here in America decided not to go to college and are doing better than those that did. Why can’t Korean people do the same? If I am employing somebody, I want someone who has proven themselves in their field, not somebody who just got a degree. Everything you could possibly learn is online now. The only exceptions are medical school, law school, and some engineering fields.
In the end, the emphasis on education seems to be hurting Korea. As someone who seems to be familiar with Korean culture, I would really like to hear an explanation about this from you.

K K - They were included yeah, but I work in the Software Engineering field and some of the best programmers I know did not go to College and learned to do it on their own.
@@cadescableshow the demand is high in America for programmers. In Korea almost every job sector is oversaturated with qualified applicants. That's the main difference. Take for example teachers, theres such a high demand for teachers in America that they are even recruiting from the Philippines and other countries. In Korea there are too many teachers so many teachers are unable to find work. Frankly too many Koreans want to be doctors, lawyers, CPA, etc. so the job market is oversaturated. If the job market is as competitive as Korea then companies are only going to pick the cream of the crop. There are so many Americans who don't even graduate high school or have a GED. American society isnt competitive and that's why America has an incredibly ignorant portion of society and the biggest prison population in the world per capita

@SandboxArrow it is true the average korean is smarter than an average american but top schools in the world are still based in America.Say one person graduates with a CS degree in korea and another person in Korea. The guy in America will not only make more, but will live a healthier lifestyle (mentally) than the person that works in Korea. Average Koreans make less than average Americans and work longer hours. This is just showing us the competitiveness in Korea and how useless college truly is. This is why suicide rate among teens is one of the highest in Korea.
It’s sad that people’s lives still depend so much on passing an exam. I wish this guy can find happiness through other means.
If only we could overcome that stigma of not having a degree. Ego and elitism are more insidious than we think.....

@@lalakuma9 Unfortunately there were a lot of document forgers in the 1990s, with a lot of English teachers showing fake degrees to teach in Korea. Now, we need to get all qualifications notarized and apostilled, so there might not be much trade as a document forger anymore!

That's just so sad. I feel horrible for everyone who is giving their best but won't be accepted. Maybe I'm too weak to live in a competitive world, but I admire people who fight again and again in order to pursue their dreams.
I actually was in a similar case, too. I wanted to become a pharmacist, and in order to access to the pharmaceutical studies, I had to pass a very difficult competitive exam. Still, it was less demanding that the SAT. You had to be within the first 10% or so to pass. But it was kinda hard too, a lot of memorizing, and dumb question only to select people and not really to make good professionals of them.
I failed the first time, so I took it again. The second tome was the hardest. I knew like 90% of the required knowledge, the 10% left were all ridiculously specific details, but you have to memorize them as well because that was the tricky selective part.
There was no curiosity left at this point. just endless, boring memorizing. I wasn't studying for me anymore. Just for that dumb multiple choice questions. So I shut my feelings up and keep on studying anyway.
I passed, though. And I actually did great.
But when I saw the results, I didn't feel anything at all.
This was supposed to be the day of my life at that time ! Where was my victory ?
I could finally study in my dream field, the hardest part was done, but I couldn't feel anything anymore.
I couldn't even enjoy my classes anymore.
This was supposed to be my dreamed university life.
Two years later, I am told to stop school because of severe depression. I stayed at home the following year and never went back to that university.
Even if my mental health is better now, this whole thing still feels bittersweet to that day.
So seeing that guy ruining his mental health scares me. Seeing so many young people doing so, I feel so sad for them. Because passing the test doesn't mean everything gets better afterwards.
Sorry if that was discouraging.

I really hope you are doing well right now. Keep pursuing your dreams if you have a clear vision of what they are, even if that means going back to the university (if that still is the case and if that still is the possibility, because I assume that it requires much dedication and deprivation from every day normal things...). I hope you are not depressed anymore and that above everything else you have your family's support throughout whatever you are going through, because both emotional and financial support is an important one when going through such hardships. I myself have been there and am going through semi-depressed phases from time to time, because I have not yet myself figured my life out. I did not have a clear vision of what I was going to study (I had some ideas getting into software development but math was my weak point and could not pass math exam that was necessary to get into that faculty program and my parents couldn't financially support that option, so I did not even try it), so I just went into law, and even though I finished it and were doing academically really great and am studying for bar exam now, I do not find any joy in it and am really worried if and how I can keep doing this and how is this all gonna pan out, but will see. Wish you all the best and I hope that you will find your happiness :D

Thank you for sharing your story. It killed me a little when you described how your passion withered even when you attained your goal. Worse, you developed depression during your university days. I've always been thinking....has the education system regressed into a hazing process? Just because I spent 4 years getting a degree means I DESERVE TO GET PROMOTED!! I have seen useless people with degrees get promoted because they have degrees while those with diplomas who have contributed the most were held back by an arbitrary glass ceiling. So in order not to get held back, people get into degree programs that don't interest them at all, which inevitably leads to mental health issues as humans need to know that what they're doing has MEANING!!! The time spent writing essays that no one cares about and doing rote learning could have been better used elsewhere. Gosh I really wish a radical change happens someday. At this point in time, the greatest enemy against this change seems to be elitism.
I get that feeling... I'm taking the MCAT for the second time and i'm still not meeting the score I need to make my dream come true and make it to medical school. It's been 3 years for me.. and I'm almost 30.. 화이팅, 종현씨..! Let's do our best and make our dream come true.

not really, he doesn't have to work for money. a lot of people can't even go to college because of money or at least they have to work part time.

As a Korean, the worst part I think is that it is like an endless competition. Even though you entered prestigious university, it isn't easy to get a so-called great job.. Luckily if you got that job, it wouldn't be also easy to survive in there.. you have to graduate great univ, look "not ugly not fat", be extroverted, humble at the same time, diligent, get great job, and also you have to get married, have a child,
And then your child have to enter top university in the future. THERE ARE NO ENDPOINT

We all know it's not efficient, effective and not right, but as an one individual in a big society that values education level, we can't change the mood and atmosphere:-( actually it started almost hundred years ago. @Edward Tay no the endpoint is politics. What does investing in North Korea and other foreign countries have to do with anything. To change that stupid system of theirs it needs to be done through politics.
@Edward Tay seeking solutions outside isn't that effective I think. NK is SK's enemy obviously but it has nothing to do with that. Our problem, meritocracy, is about perspectives and customs. It means the problem could be solved through social way such as politics, laws, government and education.
wouldnt applying for foreign schools with high prestige like harvard be easier? because American SATs are easier than Suneung I heard, if thats true then wouldnt that take at least a lesser load for your life.
I cant imagine revolving your whole life with competition , I mean I myself spend my whole life in it but not to this extent. Its basically wilthing away your own life. What a stressful society, very different than our laidback one. wish you guys the best

First, applying foreign presrigious universities is a little bit different issue because it involves money issue.
Ironically, tuition fee in Korea is much cheaper than US(about 3-4000 for literature~6000 for STEM per one semester). And for preparing English, visa, house,,etc. , studying abroad can be done by only the rich.
Second, unless you want to emigrate, graduating in Korea is better I think. There were some cases in which foreign univ's graduates could get jobs easily several years ago, but it was a little, and Korean prefer Korean univs in terms of coordination and networks

I’m also in my second gap year preparing for exams this summer, this video hit different. All my friends already starting their second year of uni and I’m still preparing for these tests, I’ve been feeling so alone but seeing others in similar situation as me and still pushing through is inspiring me to work hard and keep going. I hope next year I’ll be at uni, this is really tiring 😔

LOL, me too, then burst into tears. I took a very difficult professional licensing exam and failed it the first time by one point. I cried myself to sleep, lol! I took it again and aced it. It's stressful and I feel for him.
+chigasaki06, oh gosh! I remember my first board exam too. I only needed 0.20 to pass. It was also my first time to fail in a major exam. It hurt like hell especially when I read 'congratulations' messages on my friends' wall because they passed and my wall was silent hahaha. I cried for a week and cut my hair short.
+Carat Suji, in my case, after I failed once, I took a year off. I diverted my attention to somewhere else - took farming courses. I then decided to take again the exam without pressuring nor hating myself. My main reason was: I had to try once again if it will hurt a second or a third time. I did not want 'what ifs' in my old age especially on this matter.

+Anna Elisabeth, I did pass the second time. The irony was, I studied so hard on the first try and failed - maybe that's why it hurt like hell. On the second time, I did not study well and did not take the pre-board exams at the review centers. Maybe one of the factors that I passed was I became too relaxed on the second try.

Grzy Ruth As asian myself, I’ve been through all this for a year with Korean students in Beijing (preparation for Tsinghua University in China). For me it wasn’t an easy year where you literally have to study all day. I just think he’s doing it excessively, that’s why I felt toxic.

From my experience, it's what one DOES at university that is more important than what SCHOOL they attend. If you do internships in the summer, get involved in extracurricular activities, & work hard; you will end up in successful places. Regardless of Ivy status.
This is a very different university and hiring culture though, that may be the case in the U.S. but in places like Korea, the university you go to really can make or break your future job prospects
That might be true in the US, but perhaps it's different in other countries with varying cultures. Like maybe they place more emphasis on academic achievement, rather than experience
If you live in america, it seems correct. But, in my country (a country in southeast asia), it's not totally correct (but not wrong too), because some office will "take" fresh graduade from top university, rather than other university. But, some office will "take" some people with good skill, rather than people who only have tag "graduate from top university".
Not true, some top/prestige companies only recruit at top university. For example, Mckinsey and Company typically only recruit at Stanford or UC Berkeley in the Bay Area. I graduated at UC Berkeley with a 3.1 GPA and got a job w/ google w/o a formal interview. My friend graduated at San Jose State University with at 3.9 GPA and didn't even get an interview with Google. In fact, I got offers to all the engineering jobs I interview for out of college while my friends at SJSU had trouble landing interviews.
I agree with this, but only for the United States lol. You simply don't know how things work in Korea. It's literally all about the school name. This applies to China, Japan, Singapore, and essentially all East Asian countries.
The SAT doesn't determine your life in the US, not even close. The Suneung literally quite determines your life.

I have a doctor friend who constantly takes the yearly terribly difficult and competitive IAS exams despite repeated failures. It's her innermost desire to pass the exams and be a civil servant. She wants to prove something to herself. She believes she can do it. She works triply hard. And I will always be here to support her.
She wants to give up being a doctor to become a civil servant. Why?
@@Threshk She told me that a career in the civil/public service will fulfill her heart's life-long passion. Personally speaking, I'm a licensed lawyer/civil servant, but I pursued another career in the behavioural sciences/academia. Career change can be spurred by your heart's truest passion. And needless to say, knowledge and skill in one's original profession is not laid to waste and can be applied as one pursues a different profession esp. if you're in the field of governance or public service.

As someone who looks at his academic studies or career as more lenient, it’s always surprising hearing the pressure and standards of schools from other countries.

Pancake Circus same with England it depends on the course your going for and the university. But Ull still get in as long as you have *English/maths* and a qualification from ur sixthform/ college course to get in to uni. in England The rank of your university doesn’t matter. u will still get the same job as a person who went to Oxford or Cambridge university, however they might have a higher pay tho.
I'm dutch and our universities don't even really have a ranking, they are just all held to a certain standard which seems good enough for international standards too. I didn't really have to do a test to get in, just show that I successfully completed the highest level (most difficult) of highschool. Not even be the best at that, just sufficient. There was a lot of dropping out the first year but there are special provisions for that too. None of these things ruin the rest of your prospects of having a successful career or life. You could live on minimum wage here always and still live a decent life and there is less judgement based on your job. I hear in the U.S there is a lot, asking what job you do being very common in a first meeting. It becomes part of your identity in a way it's not here.
Of course all exams are stressful but we think of them as mainly showing what intellect you were born with, you do your best based on what you were given. So it's okay if your strengths are not the same as those of others.
@@dogie1070 I hear that more often actually, haha. There are a lot of countries that are worse places to live these days than our quiet little one with all the rules. Though back in the day poor people here would leave for more space, they'd go farm in Canada or Australia and maybe that was a better life for them there at the time. You certainly don't get a lot of space here.
I think we have to do better at exporting the mindset, that healthcare is for everyone, that there shouldn't be such a thing as a "bad school" and it being so expensive that you don't have enough doctors because the smart kids couldn't afford to become one.
Places like the U.S govern a lot for the "right now"instead for the betterment of everyone for the future. It's very annoying. I'm very glad I happened to be born here, I'm genetically very mixed though (from colonialism) so I'm actually very short for here. I was the tallest in class as a kid and then everyone else kept growing and now I'm forever looking up. I do fit into spaces easier, haha

I felt like I was the laziest person there when studying in Korea. Everyone has to work so hard just to get there in the first place while I got in the back way through overseas exchange. Yikes

Zane C. my university did exchange program with Yonsei and the requirements were not hard to get accepted so definitely not b or c rated schools for international students to study in korea
You have to have a 2.5 GPA or higher to be eligible for Yonsei Uni exchange student program lol
My uni has yonsei exchange i never pursuit it because the unit points were not equivalent which means i would have to take more classes just to make up for the points.

"My whole life is revolving around this one test" I felt this on a spiritual level. I finished my SATs and got into multiple colleges, but, still, I'm so unhappy with where I am, and constantly blame myself for not studying hard enough. The extreme expectations of society or just the pressure we put on ourselves is so ridiculous. I hope people like us one day find liberation, live without worries, and enjoy what we do in life while being happy. Nonetheless, I hope he doesn't lose courage. You will get in! Ya it's very stressful and irritating in India too. There is always chaos to have a better life. Even rich gets richer and poor get poorer. Many Indians are preferring to go abroad these days to study by taking study loans and many are even settling there and r not willing to come back. India has alot of issues. Idk when will get a better system and better infrastructure.

It's kind of like this across Asia. In my country, jobs are reserved for graduates from the top few universities, 80% of spots in these universities are reserved for students from the top 10 schools, and admission into the top 10 schools is determined by a national exam you take at 12. I go to the #3 school in the country, and there's so much infighting and pressure. Everyone's aiming for the top because you'll literally be expelled or barred from activities if you're not in the top 70-60%. It really is because your life depends on your grades, here.

I wonder if they realize burnout is real thing when you're studying this much for so long. Maybe they do and just push through it and its just more destructive than constructive at that point. Plenty of other things to say but most of it is wishful thinking at this point. Hoping for his best.
Burnout doesn't exist if you are motivated enough you just have to never lose vision of the goal

There are studies that say your brain can only truly retain what you're studying during 4 hours at average, much more than that and you're really not doing yourself a favor... So the key would be to learn how to study efficiently and manage your time wisely between topics. Having a rested mind and body is essencial, I hope these students remember this.

I feel so lucky, I was so incredibly stressed during my final exams but it was spread out over 10 days with no more than two subjects a day. I can't imagine taking exams of 6 subjects in one day.
How about 22 subject (both technical knowledge and non technical knowledge) in a single day (with in 5 hour)

Our syllabus is so Vast ,competition is so high and the cut off of exam ...Although we study for atleast 12-14 hours a day still its difficult to succeed for us.Sometimes I feel like 24Hour a day is too less 😔.Mood swing ,suicidal thought and thoughts to give up is common .

Same thing happens in Brazil. We take one exam divided into two parts , one with 90 questions(history, geography, philosophy, etc.) and a 30 line essay about a random topic (usually a social issue) which has to be done in 5 and a half hours, the other one is also 90 questions long(45 math 45 natural sciences ) but we only have 5 hours to do it. It's really stressful because you can only take the exam once a year and you compete against 6 million people across the country.

Here it's also a determinant in a student's life, it's the only way to get into a federal public university(which are the best ones in the country and are free) and the only way of getting a decent job and a decent salary. Wages are really low around here but if you don't have a bachelor's it gets even worse. That's a big issue, the exam requires a lot of training which only rich kids can get because they can pay for a good school while the poor can't prepare for it properly. So poor kids don't get into the good unis and don't get better paying jobs. This is getting a bit better over the last years, since public universities started to implement a quota system for poor students but it is still very hard to get a good education.
@Carlos Renato Hertel Sim, os estilos de prova são completamente diferentes. Pra mim, o suneung seria mais fácil pelas questões serem mais teóricas e mais curtas. Dei uma olhada na parte matemática e todas as questões são bem mais conceituais e requerem maior aprofundamento em disciplinas que a gente nem chega a ver por aqui. O que fode no ENEM é o tempo e o tamanho dos enunciados, é mais uma maratona do que um teste de inteligência, e é por isso que quem não tem acesso a uma preparação adequada não consegue ir tão bem. Eu tinha amigos mais ricos do que eu que frequentavam uma das melhores escolas do estado e faziam 3 cursos a parte. É um sistema muito injusto que deveria mudar.

KPenn I remember reading suicide rates were incredibly high amongst young adults (18-24 around there) and now I understand why..such a sad situation

I've seen the types of questions on the English portion of the test. They are very good questions for comprehension and high level reading. The main issue is the ridiculous time limit. You gave around 1-2 min per high level question IN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE. I think it would be a better representation of their comprehension to have a bit more time on those sections. I can't think of a single time when someone will ask you to read a scientific article, analyze it, and respond, all on a time limit. But you can bet that people will get back to you later and ask things related to your understanding of the article.
Giving more time will not make it any easier since your competitors will also be given more time.
@@johnl.7754 Yes, but for those who are able to understand the reading, but just aren't great test takers, or just might need more than 1 minute to answer it, it gives then a more fair chance at an appropriate score. That is assuming that the schools care more about comprehension than speed though. This would, in turn, give the schools a more varied applicant pool to choose from.

@@xeerenaidus2820 There are people who just get really nervous when taking tests; others may have a disability that make it difficult for them to take a test. I have a friend who is at a top university in the U.S., and she has dyslexia, which is a reading disability. One of my professors has ADHD, so he admits that he has a hard time focusing when taking tests, especially if it is for a long period of time. He still achieved a PhD, but it is because many schools in the U.S. accommodate students with disability. Both my U.S. and Canadian universities have note takers and other services to support students. Some students need to take test in a separate room, without other students around.
So many of them can take on high level English questions , but they can't even speak proper English.

Damn this is actually so ridiculous. I feel so grateful I live in Canada. Even tho we also have tests in order to enter university, each subject is on a separate day and we have 6 hours for each. I can’t even imagine the amount of stress and anxiety Korean students go through. I wish this guy all the best, and I hope he finds success in life.

I am not korean but i am a turkish student who is retaking the exam for the second time . When he spoke i felt like i could understand his emotions and thoughts really well . I see lots of people on comments section bashing this kind of system and yes while its a very sad situation we ( all the students suffering because of university entrance exams ) know this . Rather than that i wish people encourage us and say "You did well , you studied hard and sacrificed a lot " I hope Jong-hyun best . Same thing here in Romania,to get admitted to a Medical College you need to pass 2 exams:
1.The High School Graduation Test(known as a baccalaureate,which consists of 3 subjects based on the curriculum of your high school)
2.The Admission Exam for medical institution(which is extremely hard and it has 3 sections:Biology Chem and Physics),which contains 100 questions which you need to finish in 2 hours and you need a score of above 90 to qualify.
@@iminsideyourwalls9432 same here in India, after graduating from high school we need to give national level entrance exam (single exam for all the medical cllgs) , and same as your 3 sections (PCB) contains 180 questions in 3 hrs and cut off for average universities are more then 80% or for good university you need to get around 95% or 99 percentile.

We have similar experience. Retaking an exam multiple times. I failed twice in my CPA exam. The usual passing rate is around 14-16%. At my third try, I reached the passing grade but failed 1 out of 6 subjects. Luckily, I only need to retake my 2 lowest subjects to finally get my license. Failing is very difficult for us who experienced it. It is a vicious cycle of hope, agony, and despair. Not to mention the judgment from other people who look down on you and the feeling of being left out or falling behind your friends. But to continue taking the same path amid all these challenges takes so much courage and determination. People may say that we have impractical choices in life but it all boils down to individual calling and self-satistaction.
imagine spending 8 years cramming 16 hours a day every single day just to score high on the korean sat and realized that you wasted the most precious part of your life

I'm an undergrad who is aspiring to get into The Central Service in my country, while I spend inordinate amount of time studying my friends are busy partying their lives away. You are wasting your ‘youth’ is exactly what they like to say. Only I don't consider my youth wasted, even more so, I enjoy the process of working towards a goal that actually matters (to me).
John Wayne time invested is not the same as time wasted. U might not feel as if u have wasted time but that might not apply to the person who sat the test 8 times

When you take exams it doesn't really feel like you are working towards your goal because the knowledge is only for the test results, by itself it is near useless. I need to work hard for my exams to be able to enjoy my university experience but until then it's really not enjoyable at all at least for me and many others. I consider it to be wasting my life away in a sense, as I will never look back on this time fondly.

Native English speaker here and I had no idea what the English question was asking 😂😅
It's funny, because when you speak to koreans they sometime have really good and advanced English vocabulary but at the same time they can make very simple and obvious grammar and pronunciation errors.
And I believe it stems from this way of studying language in way so that they can read scientific articles.
They focus on the wrong things and it's not practical and useless in the real world. They come out thinking they speak english then go overseas only to realise that they cannot.

Alex Oh to be fair, a lot of them can speak conversational English they’re just too shy to do so. When I started speaking to Koreans, a lot of them could converse relatively well, just that they always think their English is too poor.
@@kac0809 The education system is to blame for the problems I was outlining. If you are privileged, you can afford private english classes where you will learn it properly. Just take that question in the video for example? The guy didn't know what he was answering...Just the answer. It becomes a memory test for the most part.

I’m also a college student right now and I totally understand him. I didn’t get into a school that I wanted so I went to a community college for 2 years then I transferred to a state university. Being a student is hard and stressful but I just want to remind everyone that this world is just temporary. We never know what will happen tomorrow so please don’t be too hard on yourself. Stay strong! 💜

In certain countries the school you go to determines how likely you'll get a job. 2 degrees at a low rank school wont equal the same level of job of 1 higher ranking school.
@reshi p it matters if someone graduates from a top school or not quite often. When I hire someone our hiring algorithm shows us your work history education and duration from job to job. We determine all these factors and more to decide if we call you for an interview or just pass on your application. The system can even tell me how many times you apply and if you interviewed before your results of the interview and whether you are a possible candidate or to automatically decline you.
@reshi p The problem isn't only the government.. Companies look at people's CV and they will hire the ones coming from top universities. The government could completely remove university entrance exam but then the whole economy will collapse. Korean education is a flourishing business, hagwons make fortune by prepping students to p ass Suneung.

Well, I think one of the factors is that they can only apply to 3 schools at a time, so if they don't pass any of the 3, they might not even be able to start a degree program...
The hiring culture in Korea is also slightly different compared to more Western countries. In SoKor there's a lot of emphasis on rank & prestige, so it's harder to get a decent paying job if you got a degree from the C rank schools... I mean even a degree can't guarantee a job in other countries, how much more in Korea i guess...
