Oh man, that's brutal that you missed this incredible opportunity. Thanks for your friend getting this footage and thanks to Tindi for providing the invite!
I flew on a Time Air Dash 7 back in the day. I was the only passenger and we were landing at YXD / Edmonton Municipal. I talked with the pilots about the incredible short landing capabilities of the aircraft and since I was the solo passenger he did one of those “Watch this.” landings. Four props in full reverse…unbelievable!
Nitpick: Bombardeir started to liquidate its de Havilland assets years before ( Viking got discontinued model maintenance contracts and it decided to restart production of the Twin Otter). It also offloaded the water bomber planes which were still produced at North Bay at the time. I beleive the Dash-7 was offloaded to Viking early since it was like other models discontinued. Bombardier sold its downsview facility for condo development with eviction notice built-in. When it finally sold the Dash-8 to Longview, it included the lease to Downsview that incorporated the eviction notice and Longview knew ahead of time that the time there was to pack up and leave. COVID happened and both deHaviland Canada and Bombardier remaining business jets got extensions to the leases. Surprised Bombardeir busines jets is staying till 2023. As I recall, 2021 was the original eviction notice. There are plans to restart the water bombers (with upgraded CL-515 but no decision that I know of whof where to build it, and same for DASH-8. With FlyBE going belly up, it released a whole litted of Dash-8 to the second hand market and I a curous to see if deHaviland Canada can restart production and make it competitive (which Bombardier had lost interest in)
I fondly remember the AirBC Dash-7's flying in and out of YVR. Great event bringing all the De Havilland Canada aircraft types together. (Looks like it was also a BYOTB - bring your own towbar (5:01) - kinda event 😉and there were a couple of stowaways (7:18) on the flight out of YZF 😜) Great video Alex and Brandon! ❤
My Dad designed a number of the flight training modules for the Dash 6, 7 and 8 during his retirement back in the day. Our entire family and some aviation friends got to go to the Flight Safety open house and visit the simulators. I remember being surprised to see how difficult it was just to get into the pilot's seat without touching something you shouldn't :) They are all amazing aircraft and you have done a great job with this video.
In the early eighties, I was a Dash Seven copilot for Golden Gate Airlines based in California. We operated 21 of these four engine beauties. We were very proud to be billed (at the time) as the largest operator of Dash Sevens. We had T-shirts printed that said “Four Screw Air Crew”. After the airline failed I was part of a crew that ferried one of the Dash Sevens from San Jose, California to Downsview. We also stopped only once for fuel. The aircraft was then prepared for export for Wideroe Airlines in Norway (if I remember correctly).
Man Out of All the Dash 8 Turboprops I haven't got a chance to fly on There Dash-7's but that's life Awesome Video Alex keep going and dream Big on Aviation man 100%
I was also invited to the closure open house this past year and have many photos from in the hangars. Just watched the entire video. Flying into Downsview felt like coming home.....thank you Alex.
Great video; great planes. Made in Canada eh ? Flown on many of these rugged airplanes, the Dash 7 with City Express out of Toronto's Billy Bishop Airport in the 1980's. Air Tindi is kind of like Buffalo, they're "Plane Savers".
This was great!! What an opportunity. I like the use of iPads in the cockpit to update the avionics. There were some nasty Canadian bugs on that flight. My first real job was working at DH from ‘77-83 at the Downsview plant. It was huge money at the time for a young guy. I joined the flight club and started flying there. I was initially on the Twin Otter assembly as a production scheduler and later moved to Dash 8 test flight. Watching the video was a real treat. Thanks!!
What some people don't understand is the prop blast from a four engine machine like the Dash 7 keeps more of the aircraft's wing energized at slow speeds which tricks the wing into thinking its flying faster than it really is, which gives it amazing STOL capabilities
Cool video. Nice to see all the types. I've been working closely with Dash Eights since 1988. The Buffalo didn't seem to be the only type absent. I didn't see the DHC-8 Classic. I know there was a DHC-8 Q4 there but that's a different type.
thanks Alex for such a wonderful video. Canada was a monster in the aviation industry. Sad to see another great legacy of our country fly away, such as these wonderful machines did on their fly by! Every type of aircraft built will last a 100 years knowing how wonderful Canadian manufacturing was.
I’m originally from YQT - and literally just before you said it in the video - I had thought to myself, ‘there’s no way it’s going all the way, and where else would it land on that route but Thunder Bay’ 😂
Hey Alex, as a footnote, the Arrow was built at Malton. My uncle Tom Higgins was involved as an engineer with the development of the Arrow and all De Havilland product line up. He stayed up north and many of his engineer buddies went down to work with NASA. I still remember the day he brought the D7 to Sarnia as part of the press tour upon its release... some very cool memories. Thanks for this!!!!! You were correct Gary to say Malton, not Downsview. In any event, amazing video.
Terrific video Alex. What an amazing trip. Like most people here, the only time I flew on a Dash 7 was on City Express. In my case it was from Ottawa to Toronto Billy Bishop airport way back in 1991.
wow such an amazing video 🥰🥰 I born and rised in Eilat. The main aircraft to Eilat was the uniqe Dash7 for 29 years! So, Dash7 taked a huge part in my childhood. I hoop that I will get an opportunity like that in the future too- I have to get a flight on Dash7 as long as they are flying :) Dash7 foreverrrrrr!!!!!! 😍✈✈
Love this video, as you saw in Thunder Bay just bear runway 25, there was a wasaya dash 8-100 and a perimeter dash. Those are just some of Thunder bay’s usuals :)
Wish I had heard about this event so I could have attended. Lived as a boy nearby Downsview and we used to play in the hills and fields just south of the then 4-lane 401 where Yorkdale would eventually be built. Among us, Murray McLaughlin who would write a song about those days (16 lanes of highway). Aircraft spotting as the AFB was operational...mostly Hercules but also deHavilland's various planes on their test and delivery flights.
When I went to school for my millwright ticket, theire were a a couple of guys who were building these at the time. They had lots of stories about how they built these.
Hey ! This is stunning history ❤️😳😮🙂 a deja vu to remember right now. I actually flew on an Air Niugini Dash 7, could be this very one. This was on my way with my Scout troop to climb the South Pacific’s biggest peak Mt. Whilhelm in 96’. In fact, on this very flight I asked the Pilot if I could turn the aircraft mid flight with the Yaw damper switch on console between Pilots. The Pilot agreed🙏🏾🙏🏾 thank God for their kindness. I turned the plane to the right using the yaw damper, and the Dash 7 dutifully followed my input and turned, banking to the right. However the Autopilot kicked in afterwards immediately and while the wing was damped to the right, the Autopilot countered with left rudder in order to keep aircraft on previously set track in what was a resultant side slip maneuver - until I placed yaw damper switch back in neutral position. It was therefore on the Dash 7 that I first ever turned, maneuvered and flew an aircraft. THANKYOU so much DeHavilland for building outstanding aircraft. #DeHavilland 🫶🏾
Thank you, great video. I have been fortunate to flown in two Twin Otters and a Dash-8, but wow how I would love to fly in a Dash-7. I have seen some Dash-7 operated by Brymon Airways at LHR which I believe I also sore in BMA colours (one of my former employers), a Antarctic Survey aircraft at Duxford and if my fading memory serves me well RCAF at LGW. On your fuel stop did I see a YS-11 or was it an Andover? Anyway, you made me smile and remise
MIA, DH.98 Mosquito, DHC-3, Otter (radial piston), DHC-4 Caribou (radial piston), as well as the mention DHC-5 Buffalo. All beautiful aircraft! I would still have wished to have been here. I remember watching the 1st Dash-7 painted Red, C-GNBX being tested out of CYZD, Thanks for this report! 👍
On another Thunder Bay front.. easily Canada’s Prop Capital. Air Canada, WestJet, and Porter all fly the Q400; Bearskin and Wasaya operate Dash-8s, Metroliners, a few Hawkers and some ATRs. There are a few DC3s based here with North Star. We’ve also got Ornge’s fixed wing base, a Pilatus maintenance facility, and the Pickle Lake water bomber’s urban office. If you’re into prop planes, it’s the place to be!
I remember my flights into Penticton on the Dash 7 in the early 80s. Also on AirBC. It is too bad they were on a route and runway they were suited for. Short and small. The Dash 8 ended up being better suited and cheaper to operate, but I am glad that I had the opportunity. Very neat and capable aircraft.
I used to fly with the Ontario govt in older piston otters... lots of time in the far north. Those big yellow birds with the radial engines could be heard for miles!
A great commemorative video...great job! I vividly recall the last flight of the 727 to its museum facility. I actually teared up; as it was the first jet I had ever ridden (a little piece of childhood gone forever).
I remember flying Calgary to Edmonton in the early 1980’s, likely with Time Air. Amazingly short takeoff run. I timed the takeoffs in this video and both were about 11 seconds. Unreal!
My Dad worked for Time Air in Lethbridge, I remember flying on these when I was a kid. I started my aviation carrier in 1990 with Time Air, they were just phasing out the Dash 7 when I started.
Used to fly this going to some sites in Borneo. Nice smooth flights. Most remarkable is the very short takeoff and landings. Always amazes me how quick this plane can takeoff.
Its unfortunate that the RCAF didn't waiver 1 more flight for the one buffalo in Trenton waiting to be transferred to a museum. It is still in flyable status, It's just a shame she wasn't able to make it out for the flight
While it's sad to see the historic site at Downsview close down, the newly reformed De Havilland Aircraft of Canada Limited is building a new airfield/production facility in Wheatland County, Alberta, near Calgary that they are calling De Havilland Field. Production of new DHC-8-400s and DHC-6s is expected to commence in 2025. I am very curious to know why a company so dedicated to preserving Canadian history chose to relocate from the historically significant original production site at Downsview, especially with Bombardier leaving for a new site at Toronto Pearson, it would on the surface make more sense to consolidate everything in Downsview rather than move the whole operation to Calgary... Perhaps land is cheaper in Alberta, I did read that they're waiting for their lease to expire at Downsview.
Wow… Trans Capital is (think still) owned by the same guy who owned City Express (OU) back in the day out of YTZ. So some of those DH-7 I flew/work on! A small note, that emergency window exist under the wing, during a mock (3 MOT staff on board!) evacuation, I popped that one and me and the 2 guys + a 1 MOT guy up front got out that way! Everyone else went the east way, the air-stair door! I got so into it, almost threw it out the aircraft 😳👍
oh hey i was there
Me too! @14:00 :)
Oh man, that's brutal that you missed this incredible opportunity. Thanks for your friend getting this footage and thanks to Tindi for providing the invite!
Always happy to work with Alex, Brandon and the community that follows him!
I wish Downsview announced this event to general public. I would have loved to attend.
Even the two mosquitoes stood still behind the windshield to appreciate that landing 😂
Wow... that mosquito @ 7:05 got a free ride all the way from Yellowknife to Thunder Bay.
Brilliantly executed. Thanks to your good pal.
Great aircraft, great event, great video! Excited for the future of the reconstituted DHC at YYC!
15: 49 I believe that there is a YT video on the rescue and restoration of Olivia.
I flew on a Time Air Dash 7 back in the day. I was the only passenger and we were landing at YXD / Edmonton Municipal. I talked with the pilots about the incredible short landing capabilities of the aircraft and since I was the solo passenger he did one of those “Watch this.” landings. Great video by Brandon! Great you were still able to capture this.

There are plans to restart the water bombers (with upgraded CL-515 but no decision that I know of whof where to build it, and same for DASH-8.
With FlyBE going belly up, it released a whole litted of Dash-8 to the second hand market and I a curous to see if deHaviland Canada can restart production and make it competitive (which Bombardier had lost interest in)
I believe the CL-515's are slated to be made in Calgary, but I would accept corrections if anyone has better information.
I fondly remember the AirBC Dash-7's flying in and out of YVR. Great event bringing all the De Havilland Canada aircraft types together. Look at Market Place this afternoon and report
Could not help but notice the two "special" northern stowaway passengers, Candian north mosquitos. Pilot window corners.
Buffalo would probably purchase them to replace the old props, but maybe they are not on the market.
This was great!! What an opportunity. I like the use of iPads in the cockpit to update the avionics. There were some nasty Canadian bugs on that flight. Great video and very enjoyable...I guess you now are running a franchise?!

What a bittersweet event for a legendary manufacture and airport. Thanks for helping ensure it was documented.
I’ve got a couple thousand hours in the dash 7. One of my favourite planes ever.
Thanks Alex and Brandon. Worked a few of these in SEA as Air BC...ramp...now I have the inside view. Great !!
The mosquito in the windshield proves it’s thunder bay .
That last approach was serious
these dash-7s look exceptionally clean and well maintained.
You forgot the Q in the DHC Dash-8 Q400
Beautiful video " Oh Canada"!!
Boy !
She is looking good for such an old gal !
And so many amazing planes at the end !!!
3:10 'Advance Throttle' 3:27 'rotate'. 17 Seconds from 'go' to 'gone'. WHAT THE HELL PEOPLE?
Cool video. Nice to see all the types. I've been working closely with Dash Eights since 1988. The Buffalo didn't seem to be the only type absent. I didn't see the DHC-8 Classic. I know there was a DHC-8 Q4 there but that's a different type.

Super cool but man, it must have been painful for you not to there in person. Great footage of some awesome aircraft!
Conheci na DHC o Sr. Charles Smith . Em abril de 1969 . Grande amigo
Wow, glad I caught this. Thanks again 🇨🇦🛩️
I’m originally from YQT - and literally just before you said it in the video - I had thought to myself, ‘there’s no way it’s going all the way, and where else would it land on that route but Thunder Bay’ 😂
Use to fly on these back in the late 80’s early 90’s on paradise airlines. From paradise island Bahamas to Fort Lauderdale. Miss the dash 7
We had the chance to have a few visit from that beautiful machine in YVO this summer

The Arrow was built at Mallon Airport.
Thanks Alex
Plot twist: you were supposed to be on the Dash 7 to depart but they left without you and you act like everything’s fine…
That was just awesome thanks for sharing this great send off
WOW WOW
That is absolutely gorgeous. Cool event and flight
Watching a Dash 7, while flying a SAAB 2000. Rare aircraft inception
Terrific video Alex. What an amazing trip. Like most people here, the only time I flew on a Dash 7 was on City Express. In my case it was from Ottawa to Toronto Billy Bishop airport way back in 1991.

Fantastic video. The Jumpseat shots were awesome.
just saw one of these fly over YWG yesterday, very cool aircraft.
Wow, 9 hours? That’s like the same distance from Toronto to Athens! Amazing!
Great video!!
Flew on Time Airs Dash 7. This brings back many memories. Great video.
Love this video, as you saw in Thunder Bay just bear runway 25, there was a wasaya dash 8-100 and a perimeter dash. Those are just some of Thunder bay’s usuals :)

Wow! I didn’t know this had actually happened. I’m glad I can say I’ve been there for a tour and seen a piece of Canadian aviation history.
Thanks for another great video ..Lucky Brandon !!! Being based in the UK I can never get my head around just how big Canada is .......

I really enjoyed this, thank you very much. I have ridden in a Dash 8 many times back in the 1980's and enjoyed every trip back then.
Happy trails! P
This really made my day. Thank You.
Worked on both Canadian Forces Dash-7's 001 & 002 in Lahr West Germany. ( 5 Air Movements Unit )
Excellent videos Alex!
Thank you, great video. I have been fortunate to flown in two Twin Otters and a Dash-8, but wow how I would love to fly in a Dash-7. So much fun. I had the pleasure to ride one in ARC configuration over Afghanistan. Great plane.

Sad to see Downsview end it’s long history with aviation. What are the plans for the property afterwards?
FMI invasion. Mass immigrant Condos brought to you by the dumbest government in the world Sold for nothing you pay billions in taxes. Get it?
Sell for scrap or refurbish for new purpose.
Thanks that is a great video. Love the Dash 7.

Flew on Dash 7’s many times between Vancouver and Kamloops with Air BC. Bloody things climbed like you were on an elevator!!
I got to fly in the cockpit of an air Kenya dash 7 in Africa. It was incredible!
I remember my flights into Penticton on the Dash 7 in the early 80s. Also on AirBC. It is too bad they were on a route and runway they were suited for. Short and small. cool that i came across my home YQT lol. Wasaya and Bearskin, Porter are popular here.
Never had an opportunity to fly on a Dash 7; thanks for sharing!
City Express used to fly those out of CYTZ all the time.
A great commemorative video...great job! I vividly recall the last flight of the 727 to its museum facility. I actually teared up; as it was the first jet I had ever ridden (a little piece of childhood gone forever).
I stood under the first 727 that came to Malton Airport.
I really wish Air Tindi uses the Dash 7 on regular scheduled flights open to the public!
Look at YZF-YHY!
^ what he said ;)
I remember flying Calgary to Edmonton in the early 1980’s, likely with Time Air. Amazingly short takeoff run. I timed the takeoffs in this video and both were about 11 seconds. Unreal!

Fantastic video and you got footage of what would be considered my home airport of YQT! Thanks for the footage.

Departing YQT, noticed it rotated around the 1100' marker, airborne at the 1200' marker. It's like a Twin Otter on steroids!
BTW, this Canadian born and bred Canadian citizen is very PROUD of DeHavilland Canada and the pilots/ airlines who operate all their awesome aircraft!
Hey Alex. My Sister built alot of those planes. I Rember when it was known as CFB Downsview. too. Great video. Sorry you were no availble.
Great video, and wonderful aviation history!
Flew in dash 7 the late 90s. Sebang (KL) Malaysia to Pangkor and its 730m runway with Berjaya Air. Interesting flight as I had to sit rear facing!
Great video. It would have been cool to get a closer look at that Caribou as it's pretty rare to see those these days outside of Australia.
I would recommend you fly Wasaya from
Thunder Bay (YQT) to Fort Severn (YER) sometime.
A return flight is pretty expensive lol it’s over $2,000.00 one way from trout to Tbay 😆
Flew on these in new Zealand awesome fun 😊

Great airplane!
Hawaiian Air had a few in the late 80s I flew Maui to Kona.
Those are some BIG mosquitos!

Eu voei buffalos na Força aérea Brasileira. Maravilhoso.
