As a detailing enthusiast (and former semi-professional) I can assure you that the chamois is completely dead. The prevailing advice in the detailing community has been, for many years, throw them away and never touch your paint with one. Everything's microfiber now.
Last of the Summer Wine was popular in the States on PBS. Apparently, it was their money that kept the bath tub based antics going for so long after we'd had enough; a bit like when ITV sent cash to Hasselhoff to keep Baywatch going.
I've been using a chamois for 35 years and I didn't know it was supposed to be wet. I thought it was supposed to be dry so it could absorb the water and dry the car. I was always disappointed once the chamois had absorbed water and became wet.
Sad to hear the Mondeo is leaving us. My old man had a 90s mk2 when I was a kid, back when we had a car in the family, in the obligatory burgundy red and it was great. Since then I've always quietly liked the Mondeo for its quietly respectable and understated nature while remaining as a very attractive car as a result. Maybe one day it will revive if the world moves on from this crappy SUV obsession.
I've got a Mondy. 2009 Zetec 2.0 tdci. 160k miles. Good all round car. I did however prefer my S-Max which was essentially the same car but a bit more clever.
They're also really really well built and pleasant to drive. Great era of ford with Volvo helping them on that platform. My mother has one and it gets thrashed, and is still running at 260k miles.

I worked at a golf club when I was a 18. The Pro was in the PGA and got a 306 GTi 6 free. He let me drive it on sandwich runs to my delight! He told me stories of traveling Europe on the PGA tour, sometimes living out of his gold 80's SL500
Another car that sits side by side with the Fiat 500 is the Nissan GTR r35, also released in '07 and more or less in the same form ever since.
When you turned mondeo around into "deo mon" my brain parsed it as "Daewoo Mon" and now I'm imagining it as a generic late 90's budget saloon with an interior so cheap that it feels like the container for a microwave curry

My dad had two Mondeo Zetecs as company cars - the latter of which he bought from the lease firm and went on to be our family car for another several years. Neither ever missed a beat and I have fond memories of over a decade of family holidays in them. Both have sadly now been scrapped, but X67 BCF and NC04 HVP will always have a spot in my heart.
Re longest running cars:
Not strictly in the rules, but the Honda Vamos kei van ran from 1999 to 2018. A 19 year run which is pretty impressive!
The R35 GTR would have been goof for longest running car but I think they've just pulled it from sale. Think that appeared 2007 so around the same time as the 500.
And I'm very happy with my mk4 Mondeo to this day. Nearing 140k miles with the 2.5t 5 cylinder engine from Volvo under the bonnet. Favourite memory is probably an excellent family holiday in Germany which included a tourist lap of the nurgburgring and stretching it to 140mph on the autobahn on a quiet evening much to the panic of my parents in the back seats! I was pardoned after resuming sensible driving again.
RIP Mondeo, probably my favourite "car of the people". To this day my "attainable dream car" is an ST220.

I'm American and I know all about Last of the Summer Wine. Our public TV station imported it and I loved that show. You both need to sit down, watch it again, and see what a gem of a show you were lucky enough have and didn't appreciate when you were younger. Watch the garbage that passes for television here in the states and you will understand.
Shame about the death of the Mondeo (we got the first Mondeo as the Contour in the US in the 90s, and the most recent Mondeo in the US as the Fusion). We had a rather appealing "Fusion Sport" model a few years ago with a 325 HP twin-turbo 2.7 liter V6, all-wheel drive, and a special suspension that read the road and would soften in anticipation of potholes and speed bumps and stuff. Apparently worked brilliantly, then never heard another thing about it.
In Alan Partridge Alpha Papa, Alan drives a white 2012 Kia Optima with “Alan Partridge Drives This Kia Supplied By Fendales Motors” in pink letters down the side.
The arse protection is cycling shorts is called a chamois, but hasn't actually been chamois since the 70s. There's still radgy old blokes who swear by it, maybe it's good if you've got trouble with your Chalfronts?
Just got new noise cancelling headphones for working at home, and in the background of this someone keeps slamming shut what sounds like a uPVC door which sounds just like ours muffled through the headphones - cue me checking for someone in the house every single time.

A chap local to me is a professional golf caddy. Professional in that he is employed by a local minor level golf pro. So the car the caddy drives was paid by said minor pro golfer and its an 08 MX5. And its fully stickered up saying "official Golf Caddy to John Smith Professional Golfer"

Last of the summer wine lasted 37 years, it is the worlds longest run sitcom ever. It was hilariously funny in my opinion, it starred peter sallis for all episodes
Maybe apocryphal but Asa Hartford apparently had a ' hole in the heart ' ( does anyone have this condition anymore it seems to have fallen out of favour ?) and was once referred to by a commentator as ' a whole hearted player !'

I'm pretty sure the new one (from 2019) was treated to a new shell, but up until then it was a long running model. As you say it even survived a name change.
Another long lasting model, albeit not as mainstream as the 500, is the Maserati Gran Turismo, and in America the Chrysler 300 has been on sale so long it's old enough to be able to vote. All Stellantis and former FCA cars, funnily enough.
I missed the last episode of "The City's of Gold" due my 14" black white TV, with a dial, not "tuning in". That's right, it had a nob. Try explaining that!?!

here in the states our longest selling current design is the Chrysler 300 its been in production since 2004 with one minor update!

There's a lass down the road that has a Mondeo that would make a passable Blues Mobile, it has a bit of an attitude of its own :)

The harmonica player on 'Last of the Summer Wine' was the rather wonderfully named Harry Pitch, the session go to guy for the old gob iron by all account. Long list of credits and also gave John Lennon a tip or two before he recorded 'Love me do'.
