Lancia built a 4 cylinder car engine that fitted within an A4 sheet of paper about 65 years before Ford managed to build a 3 cylinder engine that fitted within an A4 sheet of paper. Impressive achievement by Ford non the less.
I also just returned from Menorca Johnny, sweet sweet little island isn't it! I'd saved up the last couple of podcasts to listen to on the beach and was looking forward to all the odd looks I'd be getting as I guffawed away with my headphones on. I soon realised it was too hot to wear the old bin lids OTSOT and ended up binge listening on my return yesterday. Thanks for softening the blow as I get back to reality, you SSG's.
Cambelts aren't just rubber - they have stranded reinforcement (generally nylon or Kevlar). Absolutely agree the sentiment of the stupidity of putting them inside engines is monumentally daft. A bit like saving fractions of a penny using plastic cylinder head dowels with entirely predictable results... Modern chain setups are arguably worse than dry cambelts, they're so penny pinched in terms of cost & weight along with barely adequate tensioners made from plastic which becomes incredibly brittle owing to heat & oil exposure. Replacement is often an engine out job too. So long as they are cheap, give an on cycle emissions benefit & last long enough to get out of warranty then manufacturers are happy!
Im currently working on a version of Mambo No 5 but with TVR models instead of womens names (yes I am obessed, and no I have no life)... its work in progress but here is how it stands right now: Mambo no5 One, two, three, four, five Everybody in their cars, so come on, let's drive To the stately home around the corner The boys say they want some din and views But I really don't wanna I had a slave bust just last week I must dig deep because talk is cheap I like Tuscan, Tamora, Typhon and Tina And as I continue, you know they getting sweeter (uh) So what can I do? They use the same jingle in the USA: “Safelite repair…Safelite replace” Round about 1995 our pizza delivery guy rocked up in a clean, original paint, black mid 60’s Ford Galaxy 4dr. hardtop. It was summer time so all 4 windows were down. Very cool looking ride
Particularly funny pod this week guys! I just part-exed a 2017 Fiesta before it could give me any trouble. Such a shame, lovely engine to drive...until they die.
Been a S&S member since nearly the beginning but this needs be saying:”There would have been no drama with the broken window mechanism if Jonny didn’t get such a hardon over AC. It is nothing short of rude to have exposed his friend’s car to such terrible abuse with such obvious disregard. (Shaking his head in ground down disappointment “G, g, g… ”. “
How did I never notice that? I've had a British car windscreen replaced in Britain at Autoglass, and then having moved to Germany, had a "windschutzscheibe" replaced at Carglass, and not observed the name situation. Even being bored sitting in the waiting room for an hour when collecting my car, I still never noticed. #DisappointedWithMyself. Didn't understand the Algol references in today's podcast. ...and finally, speaking of PE teachers, my sister, who left secondary school in 1978, spotted her PE teacher walking towards here on the street last year. He totally still looked like he did from schooldays, except older and greyer. Spookily (creepily?) as they walked past each other he said "Hi Annie - remember me?". It had been 45 years and she was only 16 when he last saw her, but he remembered her and her name. In our school, there were about 300 students in each year. Imagine remembering 45x300 students names and faces. She asked "how do you remember me and my name?" - he said he remembered all of his students and encounters several each week. I'm thinking spooky rather than creepy now.
@@KurisuBonsai If my brain had heard it as "algal" I'm pretty sure I would have figured it out, too late to know how. However, my brain was hearing "algol" 🙂
Wet belt is such a stupid idea. These 3 cylinder Puretec motors Peugeot and Citroens are a real liability. When new the manufacturer said cambelt change at 100k miles or ten years. This has now been revised to 6 years or 60k miles due to how many killed the engines (not the owners !) due to rubber debris clogging up the oilways and sump strainer at low mileage. Peugeot fitted loads of replacement engines . Ford now having the same problem with 3 cylinder eco boost engines in fiesta and focus. Also new shape transits have a wet belt 4 cylinder with the same stupid wet belt design thousands of them needing new engines. Just utterly stupid design.
Feeling quite misled that this wasn't an update on Jonny's Honda Insight and some tale of misadventure around him trying to fix the well documented wet seatbelt issue with these. Other than that, another fine pod' lads. Thank you.
The Autoglass/Carglass thing is a trademark issue. You can't trademark a purely descriptive name, so "Corn Flakes" isn't a valid trademark and anyone can use the name. If you haven't heard the RUclips compilation of all the different Autoglass jingles, you're missing a treat. CMTMB.
I did a study on the HRV for a marketing class in college, circa 1999. I think I chose the HRV as the marketing literature was quite interesting - I guess there would be nothing interesting about selling a car as a lifestyle accessory now, 25 years on.
I think it’s probably the case that Carglass is such an obvious name that someone else had already copyrighted it when they took the brand overseas, hence the need for another name.
I would say that the wet belt had two perceived benefits. A microscope improvement in mpg but probably enough to shift the needle fleetwise and NVH. I wonder what the carbon cost of replacing an entire motor is compared to the mpg savings from the belt?
In Peugeot and Citroen petrol cars they are the PureTech engines. In Ford they are called the EcoBoost engines. But both are largely the same design and same flaws, ie. wet belt, / cam belt lying in oil. Load of video on youtube about it
Because algae produces 50% of the oxygen on earth I think if you do choose to grow algae on your vehicle you should not have to pay any emissions tax. I hate washing cars anyway.
O'Brien's in Australia are a long-term grift. Also, they're famous for having an ad with a particularly cheesy jingle, with a bloke who can't pronounce the name of the company. "Oh, oh, oh O'Bwyans" is forever in my lexicon.
Re , the wet belt It's FORDS and PSVs answer to lowering emissions, " allegedly " The oil must be a specific one , PSV recently revised this info and changed more regularly than other engines
The wet belt design is just a terrible design, originally the ecoboost ford engine was said the belt would last 10 years or the"lifetime of the vehicle" So Ford thought the belt would last 10 years, now we know it does you need to replace it every 3 to 5 years but the engine wasn't designed for the wetbelts to be serviceable items, it takes 6 to 8 hours to do and is a £1000 job to do both the oil pump and cambelt the PSA 1.2 pure tech engine is also a wet belt engine and suffers with the same issues with the belt shredding and blocking the oil strainer but it was designed to replace the wetbelt easily, so its a 2 hour job and cheap to do - problem with these engines are people change the wet belt but don't remove the sump so clean it out so they usually die of low oil pressure By far the worst wet belt engine is probably the transit, its really killing the transit off in the UK as tradesman and other companies like the AA/RAC won't run new transits now After years of saying their is no problem though Ford has now upgraded the ecoboost and replaced the wet cambelt with a chain, this was just by the end of the fiesta, so Puma and Kuga's have a timing chain but sadly the oil belt is still rubber in the sump, so you still get cars with low oil pressure as the belt has fallen apart PSA has also added a timing chain to the puretech 1.2 about 12 months ago
Is there an easy way of knowing whether a car has an engine with a wetbelt? Specifically the Fiesta. My niece has a Fiesta, it'd be good to know if she's got that potential problem facing her one day.
Hi from NZ! Yes Smith and Smith do use that jingle!
“I don’t think something with such responsibility should be made of rubber”………did anyone else think of condoms when Jonny said this…..no only me, ok.
Wet belts are just a way to ensure that new cars only last as long as the warranty.
Same with engines made mostly from plastic.
Love you can hear jonnys 90s casio watch beep!!😂

It was also that it was a 3 cylinder 1.0, the size of the A4 that went the same as the average 1.6 did.

Algal vehicles are the cars kept under trees and never washed so they essentially become a forest floor covered in sweet sweet natural green patina.

The Focus 1.8 Tdci did have a chain and they changed it to a belt! Melts 😅
It's also called Carglass here in the Netherlands and in Belgium, with the same logo and song in the adverts.

Carglass in Sweden as well, with same jingle.

I think the ford engine is made by Reno. I've seen the Renault on the bottom of it of the engine
