I've heard that the traditional Mario games are movies with the characters all being actors, so these spinoff games are them hanging out on their days off. Kind of a fun headcanon.
Apparently the first Mario bros is the only real one. All the others are dramatic recreations. Mario and Bowser must have sorted out their differences since then.
I thought only the third was an act or something And that's not including SMB2 USA or the Paper Mario that are technically "not real", but in other form of media

Actual in game thing… should probably do all character duplicates in one slot like the Lego games that have one slot for the different skins of the same character to save space visually and have more unique characters
