Thank you Francis for an insight of the charts 42 years ago. Ewww Gary Glitter, I don't wanna know! Classic from Olivia Newton John. The woman in the Dire Straits video is Leslie Ash a British actress. Genius of Love became 'Fantasy' by Mariah Carey and later Latto. Some very well known songs in this lineup and still popular today. I prefer 'Little Lady' to 'Japanese Boy'. This is a killer lineup. What do you choose!! My top favourites are 'Dead Ringer For Love' which is a fantastic duet and Cher looked beautiful then. The excellent 'The Voice' by Ultravox. Both Human League entries - 'Dare' is a fantastic album. Everything would have been a hit off it. The eccentric and haunting 'O Superman', some cool Motown slices with The Four Tops and Diana Ross. Great slice of pop from Bucks Fizz and a timeless ballad from Christopher Cross. Excellent early Spandau Ballet. Local starlet Toyah. Plus some classics from Madness, the Queen and Bowie duet, Kim Wilde, Soft Cell and Olivia Newton-John.
It’s interesting as an American seeing how different songs charted in the UK vs the US. Olivia Newton John’s Physical only charted 7 in the UK & in the US it was No. 1 for so many weeks that it’s the highest selling song of the ‘80’s!
For fans of Top of the Pops, at 3:10 ‘Twilight’ was the very first song to be interpreted on the show by Zoo - Flick Colby’s last dance troupe on the show, as Legs & Co were (without mention) axed in October as Zoo debuted in November. By October 1981 the lovely Legs & Co had been demoted to backing performances, their very last being to the Haircut 100 song also featured here
That time The Exploited made it further up the Top 40 than U2 and many other major acts... The variety here is staggering, I don't think we will ever know the like again.
1:4:1 Number two in GB for such kind of music: Unbelievable and congrats to the Tommy’s for this great stuff! 1.50: The Exploited in the pop charts… I don't believe!

I like Gary Glitter songs.
Good job Francis. Funny hearing early OMD, Duran Duran, and Simple Minds hits.

But 7 is a very good chart position. That still makes it a big hit.
@@shakz86 oh yeah it is. I just thought it was as big in the UK as it was in the US
Thanks For Sharing!
One of the finest 80s collabs - Queen + Bowie

In the current UK top 10 there are Country, Rock, Pop, Soul, Reggae and other styles, the current top 40 is really very varied.

“Physical” by Olivia …..peak 7….you’ve got to be joking …should’ve been top2
The most incredible thing is that it took him 2 months to reach the top 10! and it only spent 2 weeks in the top 10, the song debuted in the top 57.
Number 7 is an excellent chart position. I agree its a really catchy song but the 80s was a competetive time.
The chart was very competitive back then and look at the competition at the time. It's probably more well known than most of the entries on here.
you should have muted the gary glitter part!
No. It's a nice song.
