Your only move then is to engage and try to recover the ball, only to find out he can actually move, dribble, feint, cover the ball, and do pretty much whatever he likes with you while you just keep running at him, leaving space that he then exploits. Fun fact from a spaniard that followed the team during those years:
    Here in Spain there were a lot of doubts coming from the press and the overall fans when Busquets was first selected to play with the national team (in 2009). The fact that they had just won the Eurocup the previous year, combined with Busquets' clear inexperience back then, really put a lot of pressure on the guy.
    This all got to the point that Del Bosque (the coach back then) had to specifically come out and publicly defend the guy on a press conference and say: "if I was a football player I would like to play like Busquets".
    I remember thinking that he did the right thing by defending him, but that the statement itself sounded a bit forced just cuz Busquets was literally in like his 2nd or 3rd season playing pro.
    Turns out Del Bosque knows a bit more about football than I originally suspected 😅

    • @meruendano
      @meruendano 4 месяца назад +1

      Me acuerdo perfectamente. Además del hecho de defender al jugador, Del Bosque creo que fue sincero en su declaración, cómo jugador ocupó la misma posición que Busquets. Otra cosa que añadir, Busquets es justicia poética por el maltrato que recibió su padre por la afición del Barcelona.

      yes you can, and you can quantify mullers contributions too, i hate it when people say 'you cant see this in stats' as if statistics is some theory that isnt always applicable, yes you can see it in stats, you can see everything in stats. you can look at busquets' passing accuracy, his touches, the amount of times he blocks opposition passing lines per game, just like how you can look at muller's amount of runs to space. these are all statistics, every quantifiable factor is part of statistics, not just ooooh how many goals did he score?

  • @j800r_aswell
    @j800r_aswell Год назад +130

    What you gotta appreciate is his anticipation skills. He ain't a fast player. The guy's got no pace. Theoretically the opposition should be able to get there and make the pass before Sergio can get in the way. However, it's his knowledge of the game and anticipation of passes which sends him in the right direction soon enough to cut off the pass. It's a player like this who would most likely have some of the best success as a coach/manager because of their immense understanding of the game.

    I'm going to paraphrase, but anyway Vicente Del Bosque once said "If you watch the game you game you don't see Busquets, but if you watch Busquets you see the game."
    When he said that I didn't understand him, but when I started paying close attention to what he does, I could see that Busquets made Pep's Barca what it was. His awareness and the way he controlled and facilitated the game from deep was amazing, rarely losing the ball and dropping into pockets of space playing one touch passes into Xavi and Iniesta that would put the opposition in danger when they tried to press him, this left space for Neymar, Messi and the other world class attackers to do damage. Case in point, Messi's iconic winning goal in El Clasico at the Bernabau, the move started in Barca's defensive third, when Real Madrid pressed very high, Busquets pass to Roberto(who drove very well with ball btw) was key and is overlooked, but that simple pass and Roberto's run carved a hole in Madrid and allowed Barca to win the match, if he delayed that pass by a split second Madrid could've won the ball and they would've probably created a chance to win the game.
    He's a Top 3 DM of all time imo. Great player who's impact on the beautiful game is understated, he's influenced players like Rodri who absolutely balled out in the CL final and long may it continue.🐐🐐

    as a Barcelona fan I can confirm, in his prime you almost never notice his presence on the pitch only when he intercepts or tackles, otherwise he is quiet, doing his job in the background, rarely scores and never cared about scoring. what is fascinating is he isn't fast or strong physically but he is extremely smart and skillful, that is what made him one of the best players to ever play in in DM position.

    Diminutive, slim, the keystone in one of the biggest Premier League upsets ever. Leicester winning the league?! Kanté!
    Chelsea winning the Champions League?! Ksnté
    France winning the world cup?! Kanté
    I follow Man.U, and we've been without any stability in midfield since Carrick left. There's so many ways to play that role in today's game, but 'ball winners' have been in decline for a while. Kanté showed the world they still exist. Lunging into tackles, body on the line, unreal stamina, and I think that's the key attribute to these players, they can run for days. It's either one extreme or another, tacticians sitting deep and providing cover for teammates going forward, or ball winners pressing, running themselves into the ground.
    Most underrated position
