Adjusting spaces with teammates, cutting dangerous passlines, connecting players between eachother, recovery, zonal defense, long range milimetric passing and actual dribbling from the skinniest guy to ever play in the league. As you mentioned, he tricks people into thinking he’s slow and not very reactive. Your only move then is to engage and try to recover the ball, only to find out he can actually move, dribble, feint, cover the ball, and do pretty much whatever he likes with you while you just keep running at him, leaving space that he then exploits. Very smart player this Busquets guy.

  • @oiuhev

Fun fact from a spaniard that followed the team during those years:
Here in Spain there were a lot of doubts coming from the press and the overall fans when Busquets was first selected to play with the national team (in 2009). The fact that they had just won the Eurocup the previous year, combined with Busquets' clear inexperience back then, really put a lot of pressure on the guy.
This all got to the point that Del Bosque (the coach back then) had to specifically come out and publicly defend the guy on a press conference and say: "if I was a football player I would like to play like Busquets".
I remember thinking that he did the right thing by defending him, but that the statement itself sounded a bit forced just cuz Busquets was literally in like his 2nd or 3rd season playing pro.
Turns out Del Bosque knows a bit more about football than I originally suspected 😅

What you gotta appreciate is his anticipation skills. He ain't a fast player. The guy's got no pace. Theoretically the opposition should be able to get there and make the pass before Sergio can get in the way. However, it's his knowledge of the game and anticipation of passes which sends him in the right direction soon enough to cut off the pass. Busquets' style of rythem is very rare. Hard to find someone so clean and calm in the most chaotic times. football will miss players like Busi

If you actually watch busquets you'll see how good he is, same with xabi Alonso, was always underrated cos they both don't "stand out" in games, but they're literally running the game

I always fancied S.Busquets over other midfielders because of precisely what people thought. Seems he doesnt do much. But play that position. The man moves the game

I'm going to paraphrase, but anyway Vicente Del Bosque once said "If you watch the game you game you don't see Busquets, but if you watch Busquets you see the game."
When he said that I didn't understand him, but when I started paying close attention to what he does, I could see that Busquets made Pep's Barca what it was. His awareness and the way he controlled and facilitated the game from deep was amazing, rarely losing the ball and dropping into pockets of space playing one touch passes into Xavi and Iniesta that would put the opposition in danger when they tried to press him, this left space for Neymar, Messi and the other world class attackers to do damage. Case in point, Messi's iconic winning goal in El Clasico at the Bernabau, the move started in Barca's defensive third, when Real Madrid pressed very high, Busquets pass to Roberto(who drove very well with ball btw) was key and is overlooked, but that simple pass and Roberto's run carved a hole in Madrid and allowed Barca to win the match, if he delayed that pass by a split second Madrid could've won the ball and they would've probably created a chance to win the game.
He's a Top 3 DM of all time imo. Great player who's impact on the beautiful game is understated, he's influenced players like Rodri who absolutely balled out in the CL final and long may it continue.🐐🐐

Great video! Another skill maybe worth mentioning is how press resistant he is. I'm sure that goes along with his intelligence and composure, but he is fantastic at beating the press and punishing teams that are overaggressive.

He actually does a lot he just doesn’t dribble much distance. I love his fluid creativity I realized if I could compare my playing style to a pro / legend it would have to be Busquets. He’s so original and plays tall stance which is higher center of gravity but has good dribbling he simply plays elegantly intelligent and his touch is impeccable 🤩

as a Barcelona fan I can confirm, in his prime you almost never notice his presence on the pitch only when he intercepts or tackles, otherwise he is quiet, doing his job in the background, rarely scores and never cared about scoring. what is fascinating is he isn't fast or strong physically but he is extremely smart and skillful, that is what made him one of the best players to ever play in in DM position.
