It's useless and doesn't have much to do with the origin of Karate. It's cause of the current tournament rules, which are completely useless in my opinion, but the fighters and the referees have to follow these rules.
This rules haven't been created to fit for the ancient martial art aspect of Karate, the only purpose of this is to get Karate olympic, even at the cost of its heritage.
