    If you ask people about ELO they are impressed by songs like Mr. Blue Sky, Sweet Talkin' Woman and Telephone Line. But the jewels of ELO are hidden in their discography. Like "Concerto for a rainy day" and this song. When I was a small boy I couldn't stop to listen to the end of Shangri-La, sending chills up and down my spine.

    • @thetelegothika5327
      @thetelegothika5327 6 лет назад +57

      Absolutely! And when ELO is used - it's the obvious party hits. ELO music has appeared in at least five big movies in the past ten years (Super8, American Hustle, etc) but it is the party hits from exclusively the '77 - '79 period. It's great to hear them being used, but yes, there's so many genuinely cinematic and atmospheric tracks by early ELO that would work perfectly for so many films. The last minute of this track (3:47 onwards) has always reminded me of the end (spoilers!) of the recent(ish) BBC adaptation of Great Expectations where Miss Havisham sets fire to herself and collapses in slow motion among the decaying wedding breakfast room, while Pip turns to go back to her in the house.

    I've always hated when bands fade out the last tracks of albums because they always feel unfinished in the end. Almost as if I'm waiting for the next track. But then there comes some albums that do it SPECTACULARLY. The way this album does it almost feels like your on your death bed and you're slowly being lifted up. I thought that A New World Record was okay at first but after a few listens, it easily rivals Out of the Blue.

      Blue Oyster Cult was the first to use lasers. In the manner they did it ,OSHA shut them down by 1980.
      ELO's lasers were presented differently, but were very effective for their show.
      I remember ELO's concert being one continuous menagerie of classic songs, and JL often yielded the stage to the other members.
      Bev Bevan was a very solid drummer; one of the best I've ever seen.
      Mik Kaminski could steal a show at the drop of a dime and Kelly Groucutt sang the operatic vocals.
      The Wembley clips mirror the show that I witnessed.
