  • Any goodness you may see in me is a dim reflection of the incredible woman who raised me. Mom of All Trades is a powerhouse, an energizer bunny. She is an incredible motivator, encourager, champion of dreams, and my best friend. She taught me to love my neighbors, to build community everywhere, to adore animals, to drink the best coffee, to bake bread from scratch, and to look for the good in every situation. MOAT has been living with us during the pandemic, and I figured it was high time you all got to meet my incredible mom.

I'm Anne of All Trades. In NASHVILLE, I have a woodworking, blacksmithing and fabrication shop, a selection of furry friends, and an organic farm. Whether you've got the knowledge, tools, time or space to do the things you've always wanted to do, everything is "figureoutable." I became "Anne of All Trades" out of necessity. With no background in farming or making things, I wanted to learn to raise my own food, fix things when they break, and build the things I need. 8 years ago I got my first pet, planted my first seed and picked up my first tool. I'm so sorry to hear that, may you find great comfort in an impossible time. No one's parents are perfect, but I think everyone does their best, and that is something worth treasuring and honoring. My mom is an incredible soul who's had an enormous impact on my life, and I am thankful for every minute I get to spend with her.

This was inspiring. Not only does American culture over-emphasize independence, but it is also unforgiving of mistakes. Trying, failing, trying again and again until you succeed is how most things are learned. Yet people pretend otherwise, and judge mistakes harshly.

I’m new to your channel and realize this is 3+ yrs ago…. My Dad who was born in ‘42 was found to be dyslexic eventually but no help given, only ridicule. I was born in ‘78 and have my own challenges yet where I grew up, Puyallup, WA, was a farming town and my family didn’t believe in being involved in education. Life has been a journey and struggle.
My Grandma raised me so it was growing up in the 80’s yet living like the 40’s. She still had her ration coupon books. I hated my childhood until my early 40’s but all my close loved ones are gone.
I am hoping to raise my kids in a better way. My youngest two were born with rare conditions and have taught me the most. I learn more from them than they do from me. I hope to raise them better. 💜
I don’t know how old you are but I can tell you I wish I knew I was valuable growing up and didn’t feel rushed into marrying and having kids. Kids ARE a gift but finding yourself and skills first, to me, is more important. Maybe you want or have wanted kids… not my business… just know that life or the years without them is a different kind of freedom…. Still hard work, regardless. Wish I would have known I was a valuable person in and of myself. You were given a gift not many have or have been given. The perseverance you’ve had is your own skill set and beauty. 💜 Lastly, being able to “pivot” as opposed to completely falling apart, is a major skill set and typically only learned through challenge. We grow through challenge, not comfort. And experience allows the opportunity to get better at the shifts and pivots.

Couldn't watch live because I've got a young family, but I'm really enjoying this. I identify so strongly with some of the things you and your amazing mum said.
It's such a shame that bright, energetic, introverted kids are labelled as "strange" and so often endure bullying and exclusion. It happened to me too, and though it no longer hurts I don't think it shaped me in a good way. My own kids seem much more socially adept than I was, and I hope that'll help them through, but I feel like we need to find ways to help great kids become great adults without going through that.

Your Mum rocks. I'm a bit older than her but nowhere near as travelled until later in life when I packed up my life and moved to Malaysia. I picked up my practical skills from my father who was a WW2 vet. He went from being a telegraphist to being an air gunner and radio operator and later radar technician and flight electrician. We did home renovations and rebuilt cars. I got underfoot so much at 3 or 4 years old that when he was working on his car he would hand me a spanner and screwdriver and tell me to fix my pedal car. It was pulled apart and put together more times than I can count. My mother was the same. She taught me to cook and some basic sewing skills. By the time I was 12 I could do a full 3 course roast dinner and bake a cake. Bread came later. I was also painfully shy and bullied at school but survived that. My first experience at public speaking was terrifying. I was doing a training course and part of it required you to lead a discussion. I escaped the first day but on the morning of day 2 they handed me the whiteboard markers and I was first one up without any warning to prepare. I survived that but when I know I am speaking i usually prepare and rehearse well in advance. My way of dealing with nerves is to adopt a different persona when I speak. It is not really me on stage but someone else. In fact at times I adopt a particular character and try to relate it to the theme or topic I am talking about. I can relate to your need to keep active to keep your mind under control. Mine is always running even late at night or in the small hours of the morning. I am a voracious reader and now have 3 degrees in different specialties. The last one was a Doctorate which I started from scratch with no formal training other than my own reading and completed at the age of 65. That took me to 3 countries, multiple workshops and conferences and has opened up new areas of interest for me to pursue. You are spot on when you tell people who complain they don't have much in the way of tools to get started with what you have. I have no real workshop, just a car space. I got some basic tools together, brought a cheap tool cabinet and built a very basic workbench. I move the car out set myself up and work then pack up at the end of the day and repeat the performance the next day. So far I have built multiple bookshelves, benches and storage cabinets. I've repaired and replaced taps and repaired 2 vacuum cleaners. I have two art-deco wardrobes, a Victorian era office desk and a late 19th century chair waiting to restore so its always busy. No goats and cows though, just two overfed cats and the occasional visiting tree shrews, cobras and pythons. Fortunately no confrontations with the last two but we do have resident spider keeping the cockroaches under control in the bathroom. We have a mutual non-agression pact with her though.

As far as gardening, a lot of people live in the city and use the excuse "I have no space". Most cities have community gardens. That's just one solve, so there are no good excuses for not following your dreams. You may have to adjust the dream a little (not everyone can be an astronaut) but anyone can contribute to a space program.
