Its so sad that Alan did not pursue songwriting...I love his songs...he has mentioned in interviews that he didnt like his songs 🤦♀️didnt think he was talented as a songwriter...sheesh...thank you for this reaction and yes its describing impending doom its mostly about nuclear war...which gen xers obsessed about a lot back in the day
Oh wow! I considered that specific interpretation but didn't really mention it because I thought I was maybe stretching the concept too far. But thanks so much, I'm really happy to read that. Also I'm 41, so I think I'm right on the edge of being Gen-X (I'm either very young Gen-X or like the oldest of all Millennials, lol). But yeah, lots of '80s songs about the fear of nuclear annihilation and mutual-assured destruction (perhaps none more famous than "99 Luft Balloons," but also songs like "Two Minutes to Midnight" by Iron Maiden, etc.). Anyway thanks for commenting! I do look forward to seeing you in the comment sections! And plenty more Depeche reactions coming. Cheers!
Also that's crazy about Alan Wilder, because he is indeed a very talented songwriter. I remember reading the band didn't think highly of their "Get the Balance Right" song after it came out, but I absolutely love that one, and I think Wilder wrote it.
Construction Time Again is one of my favourite DM albums. The beginning of the sample-heavy industrial sound. Big advancement compared to Broken Frame. I also like the political tone of the album which I don't think they did again to such an extent until Spirit.
I think you're right about them bringing back the social-political vibes on Spirit. And yes, love '80s industrial-synth Depeche! Also I'm hoping to get another Depeche reaction in later tonight, feel free to give a shout for a track, as I haven't decided what it will be yet.
@mattsnider2667 How about Oberkorn (It's a Small Town) (Development Mix)? It's the instrumental b-side on The Meaning of Love 12" single. If you want something more recent, then maybe So Much Love from Spirit.
@@mattsnider2667 If you like Depeche Mode you should react to the solo album of Martin called Counterfeit E.P. I recommend Compulsion and Gone. They´re all not songs written by Martin but he re-interpreted it in his special way
@@mattsnider2667 Dave Gahan has the solo project called soulsavers. My favourite Solo Gahan songs are „Kingdom“ and „Saw something“. Alan Wilder has his project called „Recoil“. In the early 90s he released the album „Bloodline“. I could recommend nearly every song, but especially „Faith healer“. Don’t watch any video, just wear headphones, it’s worth it.

Great stuff love the analysis, would love u to react to Sweetest Perfection or The Landscape is Changing.
Hey, thanks for the comment! And nice, I'll put both of those on my shortlist of Depeche reactions. Cheers for the suggestions, I'll get to them soon!

@@christophergraham473 I know that tune "Oberkorn"), but I don't think I have it in my collection. So I'll go for "So Much Love." Cheers!
1984 was the hight of the Cold War.
Grew up in N.E. England. We would have had a 2 minute warning, at best, in the event of a thermo nuclear exchange.
The peak of their sample era, pls react to And then…
You got it, I'll move that one up the list! Was thinking of reacting to another song from Construction Time Again. Cheers for the suggestion!

@@101uwe101 Cool, I'll have to get a copy of that. Would love to hear some solo stuff from the Depeche guys.
