    Starting at his radio call in the channel at 43.37, in the next 70 seconds he makes over 23 flap, mixture, throttle, trim adjustments, radio calls etc (excluding constant pitch, yaw and elevation inputs) all while barely glancing where to place his hands. Then he alights the 5,000 lb aircraft on the water like a piece of thistle down. Truly a master at the height of his chosen art.

    I could be wrong, but I think your description of the stratus layer was backwards at 28:00. The water would be warmer, warm air rises, cools to LCL and condenses... Someone chime in if I'm wrong I'd genuinely like to learn! But great airplane and awesome flying! I'm working on my commercial now, and my ultimate goal is to own and commercially operate my own beaver some day!

    spent quite a few hours sitting behind the twin bladed prop on an R985. in Army colors. Why I am deaf today, but what a way to go!! Honest airplane no tricks , a pleasure to fly. just a big tail dragger.

    After returning from Anchorage and watching all the floatplanes, especially the Beavers, and living within sight of Seattle, I’m going to schedule a ride in the fall to tour the Sound. Thanks for your great videos.

    Jim, thanks for an informative flight. I took a dual control Beaver from Whistler to Vancouver a couple years ago in glass still conditions running the mountain peaks. Couldn't have wished for more perfect weather to get a mere insight to how wonderful it is to fly daily as you do. I'm very envious but appreciate the time you have taken to publish these vids. Safe flying from the UK.

      fukallogy , Most bush flying in Alaska is done by vfr not ice because of weather and terrain up here. Ice isn’t gonna do shit for you up here when most of our flying up here is through mtn passes usually low and close to mountain sides with a low ceiling. Flying in Alaska is like nowhere else on earth! Old bush pilots saying is “ if you can fly in Alaska,you can fly anywhere.” Chew on that.😉👍

      You all want to see a bush pilots paradise? Check out lake hood seaplane base at Anchorage, Alaska! Right next to Anchorage international. It’s the largest, busiest seaplane base in the world. On a summer, weekend day you have everything from cubs,beavers,otters,hello curriers, c185,c180,c206,Taylor craft, even a few Grumman goose and Grumman widgeons! Then right next to the lake is a fairly short gravel strip, all together approx 1,100 planes around the lake! There is even a live web cam on the lake, google it. It is slow now because our summer is done yet some planes flying hunters around.

      Nice!!! Boeing could have used an expert like him. The BEAVERS are still flying and the 737-800's are (hmmmm), what are they gonna be? Shelters or hospitals?

      @@ifoundjim Beautiful model. My uncle (Charles Bishop) designed the controls and worked on the pontoons and skis. He did the pontoons and skis for the Otter and Twin Otter as well--sunk himself in Toronto harbour 16 times. The Twin Otter is still the largest plane in the world that lands on pontoons and skis.

    My adventure bus company offered Beaver float plane 1/2 tours up until the dam virus closed me down. My customers loved them. The tours were in the lakes area, just north of Toronto.

    I used to rent a C152 from an older aviation entrepreneur/CFI who also flew with me on the right seat on some trips abroad. He liked my flying so much that he suggested I could try his Beaver (also on floats) to see if I liked that kind of flying. I had no experience on floats then - and I still have. Man do I regret never accepting the offer!

      You missed an opportunity for sure. The Beaver is revered among bush pilots as one of the best ever Bush Planes. You should go check out some of its development but in short the designers spoke to a lot of the top Canadian pilots at the time, especially Bush Pilots to ask them what kind of requirements they needed. This influenced the design and it shows. Under 2000 were ever produced but they're still sought after enough that some people pay millions to have them restored.

    Jim, I was lucky enough to get to fly in a beaver on floats with an air service I worked for out of Ketchikan, Alaska. Google island wings air, the pilot is owner operator Michelle Masson, she has a beautiful restored,refurbished beaver done by kenmore air out of Seattle. I have been lucky to fly with some of Alaska’s best bush pilots and she is one of the best, her plane is awesome! Check it out, also shows the beautiful area she flies in the “misty fjords”. Most would crap themselves flying where Alaskan pilots fly. Simple.😉🤣👍

    Used to fly my dad’s 450 Pratt radial engined Stearman many years ago. Enjoyed flying it more than jets. Now if only a had a few million laying around so I could afford the airplanes I’m capable of flying. That’s sweeter than a turbo-Beaver.

    It must be lovely up there on days like that. Do you ever get bored of your job (no, you needn't answer that)? I can't imagine it.
    What I really want is to be in that seat alongside you but that's never going to happen. So thanks for the next best thing.

      Kimdino1 if you lived in Seattle you’d know the answer to your question without even thinking about it...by the time you get to May (first nice month of the year, usually) you’re well and truly DONE with the constant cloud cover and all the cod liver oil (or whatever you take to deal with the Seasonal Affective Disorder) so days like this late in spring or early summer are such a treat and don’t get old until the air gets stagnant and the smog starts setting in around August-September. Cheers, come on up and take a ride...it’s amazingly beautiful country up here!

      Assume mount moves engine forward = the plane’s adjusted center of gravity CG allows a better balance when heavily loaded. Remember when a fat kid sits on the other end your seesaw aka teeter-totter? Same problem.

    At 10:30: Mags all the way off to test something - but turning the mags back on would make for a huge backfire normally, I would think. No backfire heard though.

    I would say the best single engine bush aircraft ever built. A great crop duster and a joy to work for an 8 hour day. retired crop duster.

      @@robingermon4071 flew one in hungary, was just a passenger, takes of at like 30 knots in a headwind , even with a full hopper.. covers a huge area on a single pass, cuts turns like a fokker D7 ...very interesting purpose built machine, never seen a beaver do agri work, but it seems a good candiate for the work.. slow low, lots of useful load..

      @@planegaper We have one sitting on the field where I live. Not flyable. The radial engine to get shipped back to the Soviet Unit cost thousands and the overhaul just to-expensive to justify. To maintain the fabric wing covering in to-days world couldn't be justified.

      Al Qumran there’s a place in Victoria b.c Canada that goes all over the world looking for these planes, the beaver specifically. They get a lot from the Philippines. They refurbish them.

    Jim! You have the exact same Gerber multi-tool I have. Mine's about 25 yrs old. No other multi-tool can match it, even Leatherman.

    Love this plane . Flew in them in Vietnam in 1965 , love this plane but I hated the Otter . We almost collided with a VNAF A1E over Bien Hoa in 1965 . The runway was closed in we were in the pattern and this VNAF pilot wasn’t watching and he across the front of us and dove down . You could see all of the oil and grease on his underbelly . We missed by about 50 feet . He cane from the right so pilot didn’t see him . I was on the right and and alerted the the pilot . We needed a drink when we landed .

    I really like this video , it's like actually being in the plane ! How much fuel is on the plane ? The Beaver is such a great plane , can the pilot eat during the flight ? By being over water a lot , it would seem you always have a place to land , I think ! Thanks Jim !

    Hey Jim, great video! The Beaver seems fairly simple but you seem to spend a lot of time inside. How do you balance your focus on inside versus being outside?

    I know those radials require a fair amount of warm up time, but couldn't you electrically heat the oil? I would imagine circulating warm oil on a "cold" start would help minimize cold start wear on the engine. I know nothing about aircraft engines, so I'm guessing there are practical reasons that that wouldn't work. If so, I'm curious what they might be. Regardless, thanks for the wonderful videos!

    Hey Jim take me with you on one of your flight I live in Mountlake Terrace, in high school I would go to the Kenmore Air Harbor and watch the seaplanes take off that was back in 1973 always had a love for airplanes love the Beaver. I'm 65 now but still have the bug for flying.

    Seeing DH made the Mosquito the engineering is magnificent. Over 30 flights and never felt safer at 30cw.. Crabs anywhere..[flight] anytime....

    I've always wanted to fly in one of these since my first time laying eyes on it, never knew anyone who owned one so I'll have to find out how to get a flight commercially. Thank's, Mr. Howard for sharing this, so far it's the closest I've come to getting a ride, lol. I just got all the info except how I'm getting to Seattle, ha! I'll figure it out. Thank's again.

    Very entertaining and great!. Thank you pilot Jim. Don't have much dead air, but when you do feel free to rant, how much fuel does plane hold, how far on 1 tank, air speed, how long to make it to lodge, ghost stories. You get the idea. God bless you and protect you. PTL

      Average is 100 MPH for flight planning. You spend lots of time climbing, plan on 32 gallons per hr in climb at 30/20

      To Lodge? We go to many lodges. Do multiple picks and drops along the way at times. This Lodge... 5:40 RT depends on stops and winds.

    can you configure a four-bladed propeller on a DHC-2?

    Am I wrong, the Beaver in flight video does not seem as bouncy as a Cessna or Beechcraft?

    Curious about radial engine cold start: is there an automatic or manual choke? Enjoyed the video, thanks!

      no choke. just fuel prime ( inject fuel via manual fuel pump) or once warm pump the throttle!

      Thanks so much for the reply. So those 5-6 initial pumps you did manually primed the "wobble pump" and the fuel system. The fuel lines between the pump and the injectors remain "full" while engine is not running? I had totally forgotten about "wobble pumps" until you mentioned it in the video. Thanks again.

      @@123bythelee Ya no! sorry ! you brought system pressure up with the wobble pump then ! primed the engine with manual priming pump :-) cheers

    Don't need music in the cabin, the running engine is making all the music. Another thing, I don't see any bugs on your windscreen, are there no mosquitos in that part of the country? For what it's worth, I've subbed, left a thumbs up and I also clicked on the bell.

    I just wish there was someway to be able to hear you when the engine is running. No idea what you are saying or doing. Headset may have been a better option.

      shit I hope not but thanks to the Bose A-20 you can hear all those engine noises perfectly. I kept saying I hear a popping noise on takeoff in one of the planes... turns out it was a popping noise because a cylinder was going... BOSE A-20 my hero

      Johnny Mitch I know Harrison Ford has one but Travolta owns 10 or more planes, and I heard him in an interview say once that his favourite is a beaver sea plane he owns

    There's nothing like the rumble of a P&W 980 but I wish Jim would emphasize the importance of using a checklist.........it doesn't matter how much "time" you have.

      Jill Veenendaal Well, it certainly does matter how much time you have. He probably does the checklist from memory. Also, I’ve seen inexperienced pilots with their fat heads buried in the cockpit reading some long checklist while not watching for other traffic. I’ve had enough near misses to know. Keep the checklist simple and short.

      Mark esp. with those old planes that have mostly analog systems, so much of the checklist and preflight runup and such is done by feel and besides eyeing everything closely; using your senses (mostly ears and feeling the vibrations through fingertips and butt cheeks).
