Martin and Tim from APEX Alaska were awesome for setting everything up to do this!
It’s not launched yet, but when it is they’ll have you covered end to end with amazing lakeside accommodations for summer and winter training at the Alaska Aviation Adventure HQ.
Pilots would come and join us to “expand” their flying skills, get to see Aviation from a different angle and experience the application of it to Alaska. Specialized 1 on 1 training as well as groups of 6-8 to come and fly helicopters, floats (Super Cub and beaver), wheels, skis, lakes rivers and Ocean!

FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

My grandfather, Fred Howard Buller, was the lead aerodynamic engineer on the Beaver. They even named the flight test vehicle, CF-FHB, after him. This video, and the others in the series, are fantastic and encapsulate everything about the Beaver that captivates all of us, and made me want to be a pilot in the first place.
Would love to have a chance to fly one some day.
That is History right there! Awesome
"It's a good song" love that.
Yup. I knew how I was gonna edit this when he gave me that sound bite
@@FlightChops Have you seen content by the dude who flies a Quest Kodiak all over PNG?
What a impressive aircraft. Cant believe we dont make more planes like this today. And the sound of that big radial... Love it.
On my bucket list to fly a Beaver. One magnificent flying machine!
Steve's love letter to the Beaver. 🤣
Instagram stories squad represented!
DHC got it right when they designed the Beaver. One of the most capable and docile taildraggers ever designed.
I was just talking to a Canadian friend who flew them in the Canadian north a number of years ago. I know what you’re feeling. Anyone who has flown Beavers develops a strong admiration for them.
They were also conceived thanks to legendary bush pilot Punch Dickens.
0:54 only i noticed that the shadow of the beaver looks like a helicopter and not an airplane. Beatiful machine and awesome video!
I just met Mr. Martin flying his new twin bee from Florida to alaska. He happened to be at our airport in okc. Recognized him from this series. What a great guy. He took a few hours to go grab a coffee and talk to me about flying and all these cool things he’s been able to do. If I ever get a chance to go up to alaska, I’ll definitely have to go fly with him. Just as cool of a guy in real life as he is in these videos.
"Put the horses back to work..." Love it.
Martin, bet this guy could get me over my fear of flying. Calm and sharp.
Yes, he’s solid - we’ll share more of his backstory in future episodes
I don’t think there’s a better showcase of the Beaver anywhere else on the internet. Awesome work putting this together. I wish there were one of these for all my favorite planes.
Really appreciate this feedback! It was an honour to be able to make this series.
That looks so new inside. So cool! Thank you.
Wow that sound and flight is awesome! Thanks Chops!!!
My father used to fly beavers in northern Quebec when I was a kid. It brings back a lot of memories when I hear the two blade version. Same thing with the C185 on takeoff, such a distinctive noise as well.
I love that control panel
Always was my fav aircraft. Awesome!
Love that sound!
Congratulations on your achievements!!!!!!!
Can't wait for the next two parts! That was amazing!
Bucket list for sure. Awesome plane.
Looking forward to seeing the progress!
Thank you for living my dream for me! I plan to do this soon!
My all time favourite aircraft and manufacturer!
I have loved this series Chopsy ! it has been first class, even my wife wanted to watch it ! and trust me that's an honour
Love this bush pilot action.
You are a very blessed guy!!
You're fortunate. I got to fly one with Harrison... Amazing aircraft!
Ford?
Such a beautiful video, Canadian Beaver flying introduction.
I love this plane. Thanks for sharing.
Martin's a great instructor!
Love the DHC1 and 2 both fantastic aircraft.
'The Beaver Smile'.....ha love it! I've flown in a Beaver a number of times and have been lucky enough to have been at the controls a couple times too. Just a great Canadian airplane.
Great video content. Nailed the pace and editing too.
I've been a subscriber for about 2-3 years now and have always been really impressed by your videos, but lately I've been getting blown away! :-D May you continue to live your best life and continue sharing it with us; you are a very positive inspiration to many! Case and point, we just purchased a Stinson 108 and are dreaming of putting it on floats in a year or two thanks in part to you and your team :-) Best regards, Christian
Nothing like flying float planes in Alaska! It is an experience like none other! Thank you for bringing us along...
I Love your Beaver episodes....!
Great job! Very envious.
What a beautiful airplane! Thanks.
Awesome video! Definitely a dream of mine to fly a Beaver.
Such a legendary plane. Great vid!
You're one lucky guy Steve !
Way to go eh 👍
Steve, very nice video. Thank you for giving the Beaver so much respect. The plane has certainly earned it over its years of service. It’s interesting to see how other people are training folks to fly Beavers. As usual I disagree with some things but overall it’s a lovely tribute to the learning process. I’m sure the DHC-2 content on your channel will be watched a ton!
It’s my favorite airplane! Thank you so much for this one!
Thanks for sharing all the details! Great explanations.
Great video! Loved the sound of the radial rumbling away when you were on the water. we have at least three or four Beavers flying here in New Zealand, one in RNZAF colours as one we used down in Antarctica, one owned by an ex Ag pilot who used to fly them for top dressing (crop spraying) and a couple of float versions although one landed with wheels down and ended up upside down. She's being rebuilt.
Beavers are such awesome aeroplanes! 😍
my first flight in a float plane was on a beaver from Prince Rupert to the queen charlotte islands. Those radials truly are something else, it's largely sparked my interest in aviation.
Hi Steve. Another great video.
Just a quick sentimental note.
I noticed when inside the hangar there was a beautiful 337 Skymaster close.
Brought back some nostalgic memories of my Portuguese Air Force service some 30/40 years ago.
That was my basic training aircraft and later on the one I flew for the next 4 years.
Great airplane.
Happy landings flightshopps.
What a magnificent instructor, sure would love to fly with Martin some day!! I can honestly say this would be a life dream come true!! Fantastic series Steve, keep it up, and congratulations on the DHC-2 check. I have to go research APEX Alaska now.
THis has to be my favourite plane no question. The Beaver just has so much character
Awesome video Steve.
You have no idea how much I have been waiting for this, the DHC-2 is one of my all time favourite aircraft, that is one hell of an opportunity. Something that I might one day be able to do myself.
Cracking insight into the operation of the mighty beaver. I don't know why but I always imagined it would be a bit of a handful seems not. I now await the next instalment.
Thanks Steve.
Hugs,
Mel xx
Congratulations Steve 👍🌷
Beaver together with The Piston Otter is really nice planes to fly 😉
"show me the Beaver smile"
What a wonderful video, although I'm going to watch the tank selection yet again to understand it. Keep up the great work.
Great training
im totaly getting a DHC beaver RC plane after watching this awesome flight video. im hoping someday Ill be flying real airplanes but for now its just RC planes. Another great video of one of my favorite planes!
I basically grew up on a beaver out on lake Clark. Usually had it on tundra tires but it was always so special when we’d put the floats back on. What a workhorse that plane was. For how big it was, it was impressive how short of a take off distance it needed. Loved the video!
Flying a Beaver is a life ambition :)
Incredible machine!!!
Awesome video! Nice deep dive!!!
I'm actually restoring 2 of these in Dhaka, Bangladesh atm . Amazing aircraft ! I wish I could show you guys the makeover
I was really exited to see this vídeo, and i was not dissapointed mate.
I want to become a pilot, i'm 16 at the time, and watch your videos really inspire me with that dream, keep flyin', chops!
Pd: That radial engenie sound it's just beautiful!
Excellent instructor.
I never checked my watch/clock once, someone has already stated they wanted to see more, I feel the same. The DHC-2 Beaver has become my favorite. The engine is my music, it's like the music of the Ford GT-40, my radio is the sounds of the engine. Thank you, for sharing, I've left a thumbs up and I'm already subbed. Keep up the good work (fun)!
That was great! I have not had a chance to go flying in the last few months and this helps get through the rough spots. I have time in a turbine Beaver but the sounds and just don't compare to this!
thanks,
If you ever get up to Sudbury, check out Science North and the Rusty Blakey story. Rusty was a Beaver pilot who flew for Austin Airways off Ramsey Lake in Sudbury for many years.
Cool thanks
OMG the sound of that engine is just the most beautiful thing. I'm just a sim pilot but one of the most fun things I've done is with the SoulMade Simulations DHC-2 Beaver for X-Plane 11 and did a big tour of New Zealand with full photo scenery.
So awesome, my favorite airplane!
My first ride in a float plane was in a Beaver on a hunting trip in NF. I didn't realize at the time how lucky I was! Great video.
0:06 we really need to work on our knots 😬
Beautiful beautiful plane
My buddies and I did a fishing trip in Canada last year and took a Beaver to the cabin. Epic trip and made me want to be a bush pilot. 😀
I was in Parry Sound yesterday (28-09-2020) and saw a beautiful Beaver at the dock, What a beautiful aircraft it was Canadian Reg.
thx! gives me goosebumps
I want to give this more than one thumbs up. Love it...thanks so much Steve!
Awesome - thanks!
Thanks. One of my all time favorite aircraft as well. I wish I could fly it someday.
Very instructive, great camera work, good sound!!
Great video for us run of the mill Aviators.
Makes me want to move to AK.
Great job great work
Nice vid Man! keep it up
Part of my pilot dreams I did not finish. Got the ratings, but always wanted to fly the beaver and just never got the money to do it. God bless you...hope you had fun
If you're a high wing fan this has to be your favorite airplane, and the sound of that engine is so sweet!
So cool, I feel like nearly every video gives me another bucket list item to try
That’s my goal :)
My last time in a beaver was hauling drums almost 200nm away from base and back. We left at sunrise and did 3 trips that day. It's incredible how easy to fly it is.
Used to fly these scouting for big oil in Alaska! Absolutely nothing more classic, nostalgic, nor stylish on floats than this bad boy! Man at 72 now, I've sure missed it and those days over the years! And oh yeah, it's measure thrice and cut once on the fuel mgmt - only bass akwards thang on that dream machine - like trying to figure out an LEL/O2 meter! High flight!
One of my favorite airplanes.
Fantastic!
Awesome instructor!!!
My favorite aircraft, “Nice Beaver”.
Best ever series Steve, the build, not so much.
Haha - welp... I designed the Build Vlog thumbnails and titles to make it super clear it was essentially a "side stream" of content, as I knew it was targeting the niche with in the niche... So that viewers like you who are not interested, would not accidentally click and be disappointed.
I really enjoy your videos. 😊
I'm sooo envious , something about De Havilland kind of a cross between a big heavy old tool and a fine Swiss watch. Got to ride in an Otter in AK , Wonderful!! Looks like you were having a ball. Thanks for sharing , Blue Skies.
I thought it was a robinson chasin em too 😂😂
Thanks for putting this together. That takes a lot of time and effort. Great video!
Appreciated!
That is a beautiful airplane
I wish I had the money for this. Always wanted to get my rating. I live in Arizona though so it'd most likely never get used. Plus Martin teaching style reminds me of my Grandpa so that's a bonus.
Went for a flight in a twin otter on floats at Yellowknife. Those turbines are something else, along with the sound of the props being cycled.during run-up.It would seem that DeHavilland “nailed it” a few times long the way.
Awesome mate 👍
Wish we had more water bodies to fly in Australia 🤙
Im thinking a cub is a little beaver, not the other way round. Ive been fortunate to enjoy trips in quite a few in BC, Yukon and NWT, wheels floats skis. Years ago there was one based in the Queen Charlottes that aparently was Castros personal revolution ride. Love the harley rumble, though the turbine conversion is pretty outstanding, great video. Thank you
Man, such an amazing aircraft. No matter how many I fly, I want more. Currently doinga rebuild on an old Pitt Special kit a nearby enthusiast bought, but never finished. At this point I have 3 aircraft flying and two being built. Two of them used for work (deliveries, mostly to mining and oil companies), one (tomahawk) is my current personal aircraft, and im slowly making it far better than new, from the engine (looking at options now, hoping to get something up to at least 135hp new). The Pitts Special is just a dream deal, being lucky enough to have the space, skills, and equipment to finish it.
Flying proves money can buy happiness.
the more parts the better!!
