- Concorde G-BOAC made an unexpected visit to Edinburgh airport operating the Edinburgh-Heathrow shuttle in place of the normal 757. Certainly turned a few heads when it appeared on approach! I took the video from the old rooftop viewing area at Edinburgh before it was closed. Apologies for the poor quality. Beautiful plane, it was always awe inspiring to see it.
More videos of Concorde can be found on the excellent TheConcordeChannel youtube channel at / theconcordechannel
Have just seen this video. I was the fortunate Captain that day; we were called at home to see how soon we could be at Heathrow and my crew assembled ready for a midday departure. It was St. Andrew's day and, in my opinion a clever commercial idea to substitute the Concorde. We flew London to Glasgow via the North Sea route to go supersonic reaching 60,000 easily (we were climbing like an express train at 59500' and felt slight negative g as we levelled off). We then flew from Glasgow to Edinburgh in poor weather with much low cloud which was unfortunate because we carried a special group of passengers, children all with some disability and all escorted by carers. We finally flew from Edinburgh back to London, again at Mach 2. My best memory of the day was meeting three passengers (all passengers visited the cockpit in those days if they wished) who worked together, were on our first leg to Glasgow and who were due to fly home from Glasgow on the Shuttle later that day. Hearing of our plans to fly back from Edinburgh, they hired a taxi and drove to Edinburgh, so we met them again on the flight back to Heathrow. Happy Days!!
nice
Back when humankind had hope that a better future was yet to come!
This is just immense. Imagine the people who were on that service seeing Concorde when they arrived at their gate. Their jaws must have dropped
*and a beauty of a 757 in British Airways 1990's colors*
You gotta feel sorry for the little prop plane knowing he's following the greatest plane down the runway.
Caution wake turbulence following the Concorde...

Oh my gosh, I was thinking the same thing. That prop is intimidated by how much faster the Concorde flies!
That plane doesn't want to be anywhere near those reheat Olympus engines. That little prop would be a little pool of liquid metal.
On the other hand, hearing that message from air traffic control as you lineup and wait would be a unique thing.
“Caution air wake turbulence fastest passenger plane in the world”
Using the Concorde to cover a domestic flight by a 757
Aviation has changed so much....
I flew on that Concorde from Manchester Airport in 1990. The take off was amazing
It used to take off twice a day from Heathrow, 11amish & 7pmish. I miss the crackling roar as she would fly over my mum & Dads flat making the whole block rattle. Miss this plane so much, just beautiful
It came over my parent's house in Berkshire between 10.45 and 11 am.
When I was about 6 or 7, I flew in Concorde from Heathrow to the Air Tattoo airshow... It was only a 20 minute flight and we didn't go supersonic, but that doesn't matter
I can remember little bits and pieces of it but at the time I didn't understand the importance and uniqueness of the plane.
You are all probably not interested about that, but if you have flown in Concorde you just feel like you have to tell everyone about it - I can't help it.
You'd think I was the bloody pilot.
I flew to New York on Concorde,it was simply amazing..I had to rough it on the way home on The QE2 to Southampton.
That's terrible. I was on the QE2 when there was an IRA bomb threat. That was rough
Queen of the skies a real thing of beauty untouchable never again sadly she’s surely missed the world took a step backwards the day we lost her 😩
the 747 still flying
It is your right but not a patch on Concorde I know which one I’d rather fly in 👍🏻
What a glorious jet! Nothing looks or hits you in the feels than concord.♥️
Rolls-Royce/Snecma Olympus 593
Spitfire Merlin. The 2 greatest sounds ever .
Most beautiful plane ever 👍👍
I was just a kid when Concorde was withdrawn, didn't really appreciate her at the time. Having since seen the other Olympus-powered delta quite a bit, it reinforces my respect for Concorde as a fabulous white elephant. The very concept of a delta-wing narrow-body reheated public transport airliner! Audacious, absurd, awesome.
Richard Harrold Was
Hardly a white elephant. Was hugely admired around the world and ground-breaking, decades ahead of its time.
@@gavinedinburgh and quickly established itself as commercially unviable, operated solely for reasons of prestige rather than profit, was banned from a number of airports for noise and pollution reasons - and those restrictions have only got stricter and more widespread since it was grounded. It probably should never have been built, it was a daft idea, a dead-end dick-waving exercise that the Yanks had the good sense to back out of before even attempting to build a prototype... but I'm glad it existed and that I saw it fly. It was a creature very much of its time - but it had its time and became an obsolete dinosaur competing against much larger, more luxurious, quieter and roomier aircraft, speed its only trump card. Even without Paris and the ensuing grounding of the type, I don't see how it could have survived economically against the A380. It was a magnificently mad machine, and now, rightly, a museum piece.
Nowadays we've got great technology in planes, and then there's the stuff dreams are made of..
Concorde was the later.
It was a tremendous feat of aircraft engineering and far beyond its time, we are now in 2020 and no sign of supersonic air travel on the horizon. Aircraft designs are now extremely boring, adding to the overall experience of air travel of a frustrating exercise of trying to get to a domestic or international destination in a timely manner.
They are focussing more on cost cutting nowadays..
Same with space travel
This is what happens when the bean counters take charge. And rhey now run most areas of our lives. Apparently, they are the smartest people in the room.
Aircraft designs have become rather generic, that's for sure. Back in the day, apart from the Concorde, the 747, 727, Constellation, Trident, DC-10, L1011, Caravelle, etc etc, were all distinctive, but I think engineers have wrung every last efficiency out of the design for performance and have settled on the optimum look, which most passenger planes seem to have these days.
it was it's time - it's a fallacy to say that it was ahead of its time. That time has passed, this civilisation has peaked and now we head for decay and another dark age. it's the way of the world
Go to 6:00 for actually takeoff
Bla Bla Bla
Why when I get to see a Concorde I'm watching it all!
Do you have any foreplay b4 u come
Just listen to the roar of those engines as it takes off!
So Majestic to look at
Feel the afterburning rumble!
Oh this beauty..
Awesome piece of machinery, I remember as boy watching one take off, no other commercial aeroplane can touch it, great times
Para mi este es el avion mas bello que ha habido/per me questo plane is the best
A great experience, flew on it twice. A bit noisy and a bit cramped but fantastic nevertheless. Lord King, chairman of BA had a great answer when someone complained that it was noisy and cramped. 'Yes, but it's not for very long.'
Thanks for uploading this and sharing with us.
@Doomsday2060 NEVER stop talking about Concorde!
I was never lucky enough to fly on her but I did fly 4,000 miles to be at Heathrow for her last week. I will never stop talking about that day. She is a part of history we must never forget!
and your story is certainly a very unique history! :)
So sad that this beautiful machine is no longer in the sky.
We could not afford to keep it running. HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH ACCIDENT. CAPTAIN AND SHIFT COMMANDER LABONTE AIR MOBILITY COMMAND PATRIOT WING.
X Recon usmc I think we did want to keep it up in the sky, but the French didn’t and I read that there was issues with airbus (who I believe maintained it) making it impossible to keep it going. Such a shame though as to this day there’s nothing even near to the performance of this passenger plane.
@@Menditman2014 ignore X Recon usmc. He had nothing to do with Concorde nor is he ex usmc. He used to comment that exact same bullshit using the name Sst pilot before changing it to 9 car Cottrell.Ex Concorde pilot/captain and USMC my ass. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I miss Concorde so much :-( I have never seen any videos of those beautiful engines being run up on a test bed, that would be awesome.
This one in the video is the same one at Manchester airport
What a marvellous beast
They only generated a sonic boom once they passed the speed of sound, although the engines gave a nice roar on take off! If you've never heard a sonic boom before it's extremely loud, so they didn't usually go supersonic until they were out over the Atlantic. You're right, it was an absolutely beautiful plane and those who took the decision to ground it should be hanging their heads in shame, but sadly, I doubt they really care.
WONDERFUL AIRCRAFT
Used to see her every day grew up near LHR
fantastic capture! bet you're glad you went out that day
I would have loved to fly Concorde from EDI to LHR. I can only imagine the excitement from passengers that love aviation when they get to the gate and BA gives them a Concorde rather than the 757.
what an amazing beautiful aircraft shamed it was put out of use
People in the small plane are like. I wish I was in the Concorde!
What a plane!
VERY GOOD VIDEO
Such a high angle of attack on take off ......so majestic
Yeah it was a great facility. You had excellent views from up there. Aaah, the good old days when airports were AIRPORTS and not just shopping centres with airbridges attached
Yes I agree, I remember when my local international airport (Melbourne) had a viewing platform where you could go and watch the aircraft come and go. It was removed years ago and you can't do it now. There seems to be more emphasis on squeezing retail dollars out of people. Then again, airports have to make money, I suppose.
Her passengers were indeed lucky. Her flight crew were blessed.
Edinburgh to Heathrow? How long did that take, about 5 minutes???
Man! I’m glad they invented fast forwarding 10 seconds at the time touching the screen!
It was an incredibly graceful plane - she was a real classy bird! You were very fortunate to have flown on her before her premature demise.
I was lucky enough to see her fly in to Manchester on her last ever flight. The new hangar is looking good. Nice to see the Trident there too, another classic plane.
one word... BEAST!
She takes off like a skilled ballerina leaping into the air in Swan Lake.
That thing is like a passenger fighter jet
I bet the passengers expecting a 757 were pleasantly over the moon when they got to ride on tis beauty! I will always regret not getting to fly on her. Maybe one day they'll get one flying again, from what I hear this is a real possibility. Dave
Agree Why is it mot flying todau
Beautiful!
what did it take 10 min to fly to London and 20 to get to the gate? The people in that small play must have been holy crap are we going to get blown over.any video of the concorde is gem.
I just wish I'd been on it at the time!!!!!
Sadly we will probably never see Concorde fly again,it would be nice for the London Olympics but sadly very unlikely. It's almost 20 years since I flew on her and what a real treat. No other aircraft had such a following or made such an impact.
What a co-incidence! It was great to see it that day! Did you get some good pictures? Hard to believe it's ten years already since she was retired.
I was on that flight
I live in Slough, used to watch Concorde come in most nights from New york,09L or 09R,was the only aircraft who told ATC which way it was going to approach and land,I really miss seeing it,and when you think it still had years of flying left in it,but BA did not want it to go to Richard Branson.
'but BA did not want it to go to Richard Branson.'
Errr Richard Branson is a bullshitter. BA did not want to retire that aircraft but the French parts manufacturers did not want to continue making parts as Air France did not wish to continue operating as they were making a loss. The chances for keeping Concorde in service were stifled by Airbus's lack of support for continued maintenance. Without parts, the aircraft had its flying licence ended which is why there are no exibition flights.
It cant be flown and Branson giving the impression he would operate it was just a publicity stunt. And people fall for it!
hagyrants No they didn't. I worked for BA, and this is rubbish!
I've been on this concorde.. OK yeah was in a hanger in Manchester but hay its still the same plane haha..
It's like watching "Fireflash" from Thunderbirds. This WAS the future. What a shame!
They replaced a 757 with Concorde on a domestic shuttle route? Sounds very unlikely; the revenue from the fares wouldn't even pay for the extra fuel consumption.
It was quite rare for Concorde to visit Edinburgh as it mostly flew from London/Paris to New York due to the sonic boom. But even though passengers in this clip were lucky enough to fly this plane they would not be flying faster than the speed of sound. Simply because the plane was only going as far as London and it only takes an hour and a half to get there so if it flew at super sonic speed it would take 45 minutes roughly to get there which is a waste of fuel.
rstein926 much the reverse actually; Concorde flew the cross-Atlantic mainly because it was the most efficient (possible) route for supersonic flight, and she never flew supersonic on Edinburgh to London mainly because of the sonic boom.
Oh how I miss Concorde
fly again concorde
GO ON SON MAKE IT HAVE IT !!
When I was little my mother gave me one of those for the 3 kings day I don't know what happened to it but ,40 years later I'm looking for one amd I can't find it
I must have been standing right beside you! I've got a photo from the same angle!
Definitely the goat, the undisputed champion, has all the belts.
@flyingboats21 this is getting added to my favourites :)
@AndrewUK1987
Did that happen before or after 9/11?
Thanks! Yeah, amazingly lucky people!!!
Which museum is this Concorde at??
It's now located at the Manchester Airport Viewing Park
Brilliant
@Doomsday2060 One of my biggest regrets in not having a flight in Concorde, it was a beautiful aircraft. There's not many planes that caught the public imagination in the same way that Concorde did. Hopefully somebody will get one back to flying condition and get it back in the sky where it belongs.
Esse avião precisa ser reconstruído, É motivo de orgulho dos EUA da América
Si lo ponen de nuevo en funcionamiento ya tengo el pasaje ida y vuelta desde New York.
Its a rocket, not a plane!
Even though flying at mach 2 is expensive, flying at Mach 1 or even 1.5 would be better than nothing
It should be in the air, not a museum
Where was the sonic boom? I read that they had sonic booms when they took off. Regardless, what a beautiful plane. I wonder why faster than sound travel isn't a thing these days. If we could do it in the 90s you would imagine we could do it even better today.
It did not fly Supersonic From Edinburgh to London LHR.The Sonic boom only occurred when it broke the sound barrier.
A plane for the rich only , i certainly wasn’t sad to see it go . A plane that was ahead of its time the VC 10 , pure British engineering at its best !!
Pity it wasn't economically viable for the Australian flights. Sad also that it ended the way it did. Flew on it twice. Great experience.
WOW
;(( Concorde....sad its not in the blue yonder anymore.
There she goes
High fuel prices perhaps? I guess it is just too expensive. The ticketprice would be skyhigh...
If this video was taken in 1994 how did you upload it to RUclips?
VHS to PC to RUclips
eh?
he obviously had it on video tape format (VHS), and there are loads of tools that can take the video from this and create it into a pc video format like .avi, .mp4 or whatever. once he has that on his pc, he just uploads as normal
Looool! He send the tape to future! Thats it!!. Ufff sily people
@flyingboats21
I bet you that you will fly on Concorde someday.
It will get to the point when the plane is so historic and legendary that it will only take a couple of billionaires to invest in a restoration scheme...
I heard some are kept in near airworthy condition, whereas others have been cut up and filled with concrete?
So you never know.
Of course: sorry. wonderful
Like a phantom , here then swiftly gone .....
Sounds like the Concorde pilot is getting a bit impatient to be off at 2:54 lol
@Doomsday2060
You heard wrong on both cases.
The only Concorde left with fluid-transfer capability is F-BTSD, and even then she's badly suffering from internal tanking corrosion.
As far as the concrete thing goes, some was put in the engine casing of one to act as a weight balance, but none was put within the actual ships themselves. Also, the only reason any were "cut up" is for transport to their final places, all were reassembled, though some superficially. G-BOAD now has a "fake" nose.

There’s 7 minutes of my life I can never get back. Phew, O.K. Concorde taking off with almost zero sound. DUH.

@Doomsday2060 I never reply to 1 year old posts, but since you made a bet that someone should restore a Concorde a year ago, you will maybe see this watch?v=13vS64zBI9s
Now it's only to see if they ever will be allowed to let it fly.
1994 was two years before 1996.
