    You think maybe his reaction to the altitude was related to his body size? I imagine pumping oxygen through such a large frame is pretty taxing once you get up around 4000m?

    • @pulguirock
      @pulguirock 8 лет назад +171

      +Gavin R Yup, it is related to his height. The guy they went with is one of the most famous alpinists here in Spain, he has been in the Everest and climbed a lot of big mountains all over the world and in every continent, and he has said before thousands of times that a proper aclimatation is super important or else you can die up there. Normally it´s fine if you stay a few days in each camp like he said, but tall guys like him tend to have a harder time adjusting because at certain level the body starts forcing to be able to carry oxigen to the whole body and their blood has a longer path to reach the brain. That´s why at the slightest sign of altitude sickness you have to either go down or someone take you down before something worst happens.

      +KING mike that's a very stupid thing to say of course we can tell the difference between what our accent sounds like compared to other ones and I think that is purely based on the fact that everybody in Australia is bought up watching and listening to American TV shows and movies so you actually really can hear a massive difference when watching an American show and then all of the sudden hearing an Aussie voice. I had a similar experience years ago in Nepal when I went trekking with my girlfriend. We were at 4300m altitude, resting up for 2 days in a tiny village straight out of the Stone Ages: a few huts made of rocks... Incredible snow-peaked mountains all around us. I'd done the most arduous 7-day hike of my life to get there. I tried to acclimate, but I felt like I was losing my mind. Like I was in a dream. I was feeling disassociated, couldn't hold a proper conversation with anyone.. I just sat by myself all day, drinking tea and playing Solitaire for hours.. Very weird feeling. It never occurred to me it was the altitude - I thought that only happened to mountain climbers above 8000m. I just thought I'd caught a bug of some sort.

    I've been at the 4000 meters altitude in the Himalayas. The difference was I was at the time a 15 year old girl and we slept in tents not huts and we actually trekked our way to that height.

    Wow, very lucky they managed to treat him and get him off the mountain. I've heard so many bad stories of people who died of it. They wouldn't agree to be treated and then it was too late :(
    Glad Chris is still here with us though!

      @The Ripper just see Google earth Himalayas are present on entire junction of Indian Subcontinent and Eurasia plate.
      India has major part of Himalayas. See Google Earth u will understand and don't forget to see North East. Don't say something about which u don't know.
      How foolish and ignorant u r, there are many people like u who don't know anything and just abuse others thinking they know everything. People of Indian Subcontinent will know better than u where Himalayas are they are not just mountains for us but also it is considered most holy, pure, spiritual and beautiful place on Earth.

    The TV program he's talking about is not a travel program but an adventure TV program made by a Spanish adventurer called Jesus Calleja.

    • @jorgej.cruzhernandez9247
      @jorgej.cruzhernandez9247 4 года назад

      They travel around the world, showing other countries' cultures and traditions, and the "adventures" are mere physical activities such as climbing, cycling, hiking and such, so, you could say it's a travel program with some challenging activities in it.
      You're making it sound like it's the freaking Hobbits' adventures or something, when the program itself is called Planeta Calleja, for the travelling around the planet... 😑

    Yes, 4000 meters is a lot for a first timer. I've treked a lot, even though I'm much younger than Chris, and my first time ever was 4310 meters (Nathu La, India). It was not on a trek, but by car, so luckily I was back down to an elevation of 1500 by the end of the day. This left me with not much sickness.
    My second time, I landed directly in Leh, Ladakh (3500m) from a sea level elevation, which left me with a lot of sickness that I had to get checked out by the doctor. Luckily, that man knew exactly what he was doing and I was okay by the next day. I assure you, mountain sickness is the worst thing you'll ever experience. You can't eat, you puke everything. You have crippling nausea. Also, contrary to what others might believe, it's not directly related to oxygen. It's related to the lower air pressure which can damage tissue and become serious. You can have perfect spO2 levels and still suffer from it.
