Wow Shug, you went back into time. On those fuel tanks. That cylindrical piece that you thought was a lamp, I recall as a kid, may have been the actual pump. Growing up, there was a grocery store in the neighborhood that had a gas pump that had a cylindrical glass container at the top. There were markings 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 gallons on the glass. The attendant would pump gas up to the mark that you wished to pay for and let gravity then feed it through the hose into your gas tank. What a treat!
I’m planning my third trip to angleworm. We are bringing a couple of first Timers along. Probably for my birthday in August. That campsite on Whiskey Jack has to be my favorite spot in the whole BWCA. So secluded. My family has watched this series a dozen times. Thanks for taking the time to shoot these. Helps me keep focused over these long MN winters.
Awesome! I actually just got back from a trip to the boundary waters myself! Lake insula to be exact. A beautiful place for sure. My DIY hammock, quilt, suspension, and other gear worked perfectly....... Surprisingly uneventful. We caught lots of fish. Great fun!
You have the coolest vids on RUclips. Got hooked on them when I was going through chemotherapy. Now that I've gotten a second chance, I've been out hiking and hanging Western Canada every weekend since Easter. Thanks for the instructionals and inspiration.
Fantastic walking, location, woodland and lakeside views. I'm trembling at the mere thought of the angling potential on those waters. Thanks Shug, from an 'ole man in Ayrshire.
Thanks so much for sharing. Love the sights and sounds! I've spent the majority of my summers in and near the BWCA. This video takes me right back. Love, love, love it!!!
I think I mentioned that I was lucky to be on the Youth Conservation Corps crew that made a lot of that trail. The summer of 1980. We worked from the first campsite and made it all the way around Home Lake from scratch in a ten day outing. I have been back. It's a place of very good memories for sure. I remember a few HUGE northern pike. It's a little bit of home to watch this. Thank you.
I love the BWCA. It is really amazing how trees can grow on 1 inch of soil on top of rocks. Staying up there can change your life. I almost died up there one time. One of the most amazing places on Earth.
I am so glad you keep making your videos after all of these years, shug. You know how to create a video with beauty and entertainment! Thank you for sharing
Another wonderful meandering thru the melodic fields in the journey of your life! Oh boy, this is how I get after watching your videos! Makes me smile everytime. Im just suprised you haven't shown us your fishing skills, beautiful lakes up there. Be nice to see you poach some fresh trout...maybe next video:)...keep'em coming Mr Shug.
Shug, your vids are the best. You look like you're having such a great time out there and it's an absolutely beautiful place. I've put BWCA on my bucket list thanks to you. Super stoked for part 2!!! Thanks for making my Saturday trapped inside with a tropical storm much more bearable!!!
***** I have been up in that general area several times on my way to Isle Royale via the Voyageur out of Grand Portage,MN. Just never been to the BWCA. Would also like to hike the Superior Hiking Trail sometime as well.
Got a kick out of seeing myself in your video! Thanks for letting me be a part of your journey, Shug! looks like you and Fool had some great weather- love your videos and hopefully we'll run into each other on the trail again soon!
Did I ever tell you that back in 1980 I was honored to be a part of the construction of this trail. Working with the Youth Conservation Corps. In ten days we cut miles and miles from empty woods. No kidding. So great to see this. Thanks Shug! See you soon.
***** No, not much. There was the portage to the lake and another crew had begun making progress down the East side of the lake. There is a campsite with a small rock island as I recall. We stayed there ten days and used stashed forest service canoes to get to work faster in the morning. A LOT of blueberries. As I recall, We all, eight young whippersnappers shat black as the bears do. Antioxidants! I carried a 17 foot Grummen Standard aluminum canoe to the road out that 640 rod (2 mile!) portage in one single carry. I liked it there. Would have happily stayed longer. "Home? why would you want to go there?"
I'm watching this baking in 98 degrees, high humidity Florida and cannot believe you can actually sleep under a QUILT at night. I know it's Minnesota and all but I had the impression it had heated up with the rest of the country. You are BLESSED!
That's the stuff right there!! It's super similar to Algonquin where I do a lot of my camping. Speaking of which Shug, I just got back from there on my FIRST hammock camping trip! And just wanted to send you a huge thanks for your tutorial videos which helped me get started, and for the inspiration to do it because boy you're right that it sure does beat sleeping on the ground! Especially in these rocky piney forests!
Last I was in that area was back in 1965 on a canoe trip with a fellow who had early stages of Lou Gerag (sp) - his last trip. It looks as beautiful as I remember it. Thanks for sharing!
I don't know if I've ever seen a video with so many views without a single thumbs down, knock on wood. Love your camera personality and calming wilderness.
As always thank you for such a wonderful video i love watching your trips it gives me my outdoor fix until I can get off work and go camping here in Arkansas
hear hear, on getting out to wilderness! Wanderin' was sawing some good logs. Mighty peaceful those boundary waters seem to be. I was just looking over my calendar and am setting up for a couple of trips in August. Planning is the next best thing to doing. WOOOBUDDY!!!
Thank you shug for leaving music out of your videos. I like to play different kinds of music in the background to your nice shots. Today I'm listening to the Avett Brothers.
I was up on that trail the week before you, trail was in excellent shape. Now going for my first run this spring on the Snowbank trail, you got me excited to try that one out. Woo Buddy!
FANTASTIC VIDEO! GORGEOUS SCENERY TOO ! CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT PART OF YOUR HIKE .HAVE FUN! BE SAFE! GOD BLESS! GOT TO VISIT THERE , ALSO TRY THE LION CANDY!
Whhoo buudddy! I got to get up there one day. That looks like a fantastic trail. You must have some awesome stargazing there. Hard to get the true wilderness feel here in Ohio. Even other places I go such as WV and Ky there's always roads, houses and barking dogs etc around. Thanks for all the great videos! Keep them coming.
Love the transition from bear poop to a chocolate bar! That is one gorgeous area. I'll be checking it out if I'm ever down your way. Would like to experience it by canoe, too.
Just had to say thanks shug! Just got home from BWCA.5 days of hammock heaven. Also stopped at Finland rec center to check out part of SHT for the first time. Had alot of whoo buddy moments! Was curious when youre going to be on the SHT next.planning a trip in july myself then BWCA in Aug again. Thanks Again shug!
We stayed in that same camp site on Wednesday the 10th! What a great site. We even saw the same poo off the back side of the site. It was a great trip. What a beautiful area.
***** Yes Hiking and hanging and yes we fell in love with that trail also. If you were at that camp site right before us I thought you would get a kick out of this: When we got there the fire grate was flipped over. After seeing your video and seeing it intact we figured the bear had came back and flipped it grubbing for some food. He must have liked the smell of your hobo meals.
Joseph Scherer It musta....we were burning off our tin foil and may have forgotten it in the fire. We thought it burned up but as we hiked we both forgot as it sat there folded up. Bear was happy I reckon!
Stopped the Saturday morning chores "Hey kids Shug posted a new video". We are looking forward to the continuing saga of Shug and Wanderin Fool adventures in the Boundary Waters.
The scene with Wanderin snoring was primo. Well-traveled Sintax77 mentions in one of his videos, that a favorite result of his hikes is the hours of solid, restful sleeping in camp. Whooo Buddy !
Great video. Hail to the mighty 'Lion' bar, staple diet of the UK hammocker. Glad to see you 'mericans appreciating our fine chocolate. Keep your eyes out for the peanut edition, Shug!
Undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places I have seen you hike/hang. The peace and quite had to be the best. Wondering why you didn't fish and I have never heard of a Lion Bar…..interesteing
I have been looking for a new trail that is challenging, but not quite so long as the Sioux Hustler, Looks good! I will hoof around it this next spring I think.
Great stuff. Say Shug, if you are going to be at the Minnesota state fair, Dawn Wells (Mary Ann from Gilligan's Island) is supposed to be there too. Just a heads up.
Hey Shuge I have been a subscriber for years and it just hit me that I have never seen you fish or take small game and I know by the videos I have seen that you are a carnivore. When I get the opportunity to get out in the woods that is part of the experience for me doing a little hunter gather.
Looks beautiful up there. I'm heading to Linville for the first time next weekend, using your videos as a guide. Would you suggest the Spence ridge trail to a beginner? Thanks
Another great video!!I have been looking for a stool to bring with me on my trips in the Adirondacks near where I live-but I can't find one that weighs little and supports my 6'5" and 250 lbs.I'm not a fat guy-I'm muscular and I can never find things made for big people. What do you recommend? The Stansport stool supports 200lbs.
gorgeousness and gorgeosity. you frequent the boundary waters pretty, uh... frequently, and your sites are usually right on some water, and yet you never fish! did you just never get into it? that water looks SO FISHY! and what are the temps? you never swim either! i can imagine no force on earth that'd keep me out of that water at the end of a sweaty day of hiking. greetings from georgia, the holdfast of humidity, the center of swelter!
RasBuyaka well i've read down a few comments and noted your never having gotten into fishing and napping preference. can't fault you on that. still, JUMP IN THAT WATER!!!
RasBuyaka This ain't Georgia for sure! It was cool up there. Had it been real hot I would have swam for sure...but not filmed it. As to fishing, It just isn't my thing. I would do it for survival but maybe someday I will.
The lantern you showed in this video is a gas pump from the early days of automobiles . It would stand up tall and have a glass globe much like a lantern. The operator would pump the gasoline from the tank into the globe area. The glass would have graduations on it so one could tell how many gallons of gas was in the glass . When you reached the desired amount the operator would squeeze the nozzle handle and the gas would flow out of the glass globe into the tank of whatever you were filling.
A beautiful area and glorious weather for sure. I don't really understand the requirement for a permit just to go hiking; such a concept is alien where I live but it also seems very 'un-American'. Equally contrarily, where I live there is a general prohibition against open fires during the Summer but it seems permissible in your hiking areas. It's always a joy to watch your videos Sean, but be warned. Today I am headed out for my first ever hang and IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT! You had better wish me happy trails and sweet dreams because if it all turns out pear-shaped you will be hearing from my legal team.
M00nsplitter The permits keep the crowds down...equals un-spoiled! Have a great trip. Be patient. 30% angle and feet a bit higher than head is a good starting place. Use a pad or some sort of insulation. Whooooo Buddy))))
***** I am now a pretender to the crown of the King of Lollygag. First night was a bit of a struggle finding out how to keep my Hammock Gear 40° under-quilt snug underneath me, but after a flash of inspiration I used S-biners to gather the quilt shock cords above my hammock and it worked a treat. I hardly ever take naps and especially not when tramping around in the great outdoors but found the temptation hard to resist after cracking the code. No sore spots, no stiffness, no suffering at all. I am not yet a master of the hang and wouldn't fancy the idea of attempting to brew the turbo-turd elixir from my cot but could perhaps manage a Pop-Tart. I'm certainly not ready for Spam singles with no medic at hand. Huzzah, my good fellow!
Always a good day when there is a new Shug video. Question for you Shug, do you carry a hiking locator beacon, like the Spot Gen3 or Delorme inReach SE?
Gotta ask Shug, where did you get the kydex sheaths for your Moras? I carry one in my pack too, but would love to strap it to run it like you have on your pack.
***** we must have the same affinity for trillium and the great things you find on the trail. I guess I need to send you a few pics from my upcoming trip to the real wilderness and peaks.
The pit latrines at BWCA can get pretty stinky, and can attract a lot of flies. I was there with my family a decade ago and my mom took some ashes from the fire and sprinkled all over the latrine. Doing that instantly ceased the smell and the flies disappeared.
Shug you embody what the human spirit is all about. Positivity, a sense of humor, and a great outlook on life. Cheers
The woods bring out the best in me....thankee.
I do love these stool hikes. We get to see up, down, sideways, in the grass, and all up in the bees and flowers. Thanks Shug.
Bobby Harper So quiet there easy to take notice. Plus, short miles for more lollygagging.
Thanks for sharing Shug! Love the 'trail cam view' Whooo Budddy!
poppabear666 Thankee....i love seeing where I walked.

you should be fishing in the evenings there tons of pike walleye and smallmouth bass great eating
I should.
+mark baginski Thankee for that good explanation. Whoooooo Buddy))))
Hey shug, did ya do much backpacking in Ireland? Love the videos, keeps me from. Cabin fever when I can't get out to the trails myself.
I did not. I was only 3 years of age at the time. I sat and ate tea biscuits though!
Fantastic video as always Shug, great guy Wandering Fool....are you using a new camera Shug?...sound is excellent and picutre quality too... nice .
007vauxhall Same ol' camera I always use.......thankee.
***** That's great, amazing area out there...cheers Shug.
Now this is odd. I got a Google notification about replies here but I don't see anything from me.
Bobby Harper Oh dear. I think this may have been my fault, Bobby. I have just posted a message on your channel wall which might explain what happened.
Always a good day when there is a new Shug video. Question for you Shug, do you carry a hiking locator beacon, like the Spot Gen3 or Delorme inReach SE?
aephix73 I do not but I do leave a detailed trip plan at home. Where, when and numbers and such. I may get one for solos though as I get older.
Do you get your Lion Bars imported (with the proper tasting English Chocolate)? They are a favourite of mine too! Yum!
cnb1971 I get them at World Market here.
Love those hobo dinners.
Where on earth do you get all those strange things like Lion bar, or coffee crisps, etc? Can't find things like that anywhere.
From over-seas, freinds send them. Also amazon.com.
Gotta ask Shug, where did you get the kydex sheaths for your Moras? I carry one in my pack too, but would love to strap it to run it like you have on your pack.
Sean M I think I got mine here.....www.clevelandkydex.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=4
***** we must have the same affinity for trillium and the great things you find on the trail.
I guess I need to send you a few pics from my upcoming trip to the real wilderness and peaks.
William Kennison They are eyecatching.
Where did you get that map?! Doing the trail in may and can not find a good map on the internet but yours looks very detailed!
Got it at REI.

Handy breeze for bug control and strumming to keep the bears away in F Major! Great..tally ho
atommachine And driving Wander'nFool crazy!
Would like to one day get up in them Yankee hinterlands and check it out. Nice place.
flysubcompact Paul Bunyon lives up there.
Gotta be one of my all time favorite trip reports. How's ol' Wander'n these days?
He is doing good. Thankee.
The pit latrines at BWCA can get pretty stinky, and can attract a lot of flies. I was there with my family a decade ago and my mom took some ashes from the fire and sprinkled all over the latrine. Doing that instantly ceased the smell and the flies disappeared.
Yes, and a handful of leaves or duff will do it too. Still rather that than a turd minefield!
Random question here but do you have a 'British' section in stores like we have the American section in England. Just curious. :)
+Sam Easthill Indeed. I get mine right here in the jellied eel and mushy pea section.
Shug you must have helped sell a lot of those stools, I got 2 for myself and my girlfriend.
+treywilly431 Nothing like a good sit.
