- G7 Pod is hard to pop, but if you do apply the Type A patch on it without cleaning. The alcohol patch it comes with doesn't dry quickly, even if it looks dry, and can ruin your only patch. It is squishy when you step on it, but if you get used to it, it's the best ledge you can get. It's not too expensive at $800ish but that's for only one where as you can get a double for about that price.

Do you think the G7 is worth it? What are your thoughts?
Question, do you use three strand twisted rope much?
I have used mine once so far on a 4 day trip and have used a frame ledge a couple times only. It works surprisingly well and the weight savings are huge. We didn't have to weather a storm but the fly seems good/kept the bugs off. Doubled as an air mattress for our overnight de-proach and takes up way less room in a pack. I'm stoked on it, excited for the next mission. Also, big ups to Ryan for the super helpful content!

Idea for testing leaks without deflating the pad. Use soapy water instead and spray it on the patch. You will get obvious bubbles if there's a leak.
That's how we test for leaks in tires or anything else. Im a bit surprised he didn't do that. It's not a secret and very commonly done.

Well, in the modern era, there has never been an accident where a rope just broke under completely normal conditions. So likely if the rope does just up and break, physics has completely broken on Earth and you have bigger problems.

Cool fact: apparently a Canadian caving expedition used the G7s for multi-day cave camping during a huge exploration push... *and the G7s didn't die*...! 🤯

I want to hear from the climber that sleeps on it hanging in their van daily for a year and see if they still trust it on a big wall. I've been sleeping on a Hest sleep system for a year and its pretty much done.
I've done this except with a taco portaledge hammock. I used my taco portaledge hammock for my 7 day camp trip in Palomora and it was great. Very lightweight and compact, yet it turns into a nice flat rigid sleeping surface when you set it up.

Hope to see more content like this in the future. Thanks Ryan!
I’m not someone that’s into climbing, but I really enjoyed learning more about the gear you use and how much thought goes into making said gear secure and safe for pretty much anything you’d throw at it. Also watching you dangle with the mattress pointing down from the ledge was horrifying :D
Thank you so much for all you do for us! Appreciate it! And it's a joy to watch. greetings from Austria, Europe
Already own a g7 but still happy to see someone putting it through all thoose tests. Thanks for the good vid !
This is awesome Ryan! It's great to see the durability and ease of repair of gear before purchase!
Your mastery of the information was helpful to occasionally pull me back from my fist-clenching terror imagining myself hanging off the side of a cliff while standing on an inflatable bag like a madman.
Im slowly trying to get into big walls and your channel is already a great help in helping me figure out what skills and gear I need before I head out, this was really interesting as I never would have heard of it or considered this product but I definitely will once I start gearing up
Having this and being able to go up a tree in places with dangerous wildlife that aren't arboreal, fantastic use case for the more acrophobic folks. Wish regular air mattresses were that durable. The bag pump idea is ingeniously simple! I would definitely call it elegant! The discussion of using it to take a suspended siesta while the sun is too much is a great use case explanation too. I'd love to have one of these.
I definitely thought you were going to stitch with the fishing line not just lay it across.
Same, I thought it was supposed to be stitched
@@MassiveGamersHD That'd definitely work better... But also probably gonna be really hard to do considering how hard it is to pierce
Damn, I thought that I could never sleep on a mattress like that, but the fact that it has straps surrounding it that hold you in AND that you can still be secured while sleeping make it seem pretty cozy. Only thing is, I‘m not a climber, and while I have complete faith in the rope, the harnish and the connection of the two, what I cannot bring myself to trust are the screws in the wall. Just imagining falling as the lead and the closest screw popping out along with you…
Climbing anchors are heavy duty expansion bolts. There's a whole mechanism that's kind of similar to a dry wall anchor. They arent just screws into the rock. (Not a climber but your comment made me curious enough to look it up)
Well, if you look at other videos on the channel you'll see that the bolts can hold something like 40kN, which is a ridiculous amount of force and your body will break well before the bolts will. Massive Rock slide is a way bigger worry than the bolts breaking.
I'm glad someone brought this up and articulated it well. I'm not so much worried about the strength of the screws, but rather the rock that it's anchored too. Mountain faces are slammed with rain and wind for millions of years. Cracks appear, erosion happens, and rock becomes brittle. Sketchy
@@bowenbottorff1283 Rock Fall on El Cap is probably among the most monitored rock falls in the world. The chance of solid rock just up and breaking for no good reason is pretty slim. Rock that is about to break will not look, or sound (if it is knocked on) solid. But yes if there is a massive earthquake suddenly you might be fucked.
Rock anchors are super safe. As long as the substrate is stable. I have been anchored using nylon to a 32 story penthouse. It is terrifying, but you have to put probably over 8 tons of force to break something like that.
30:00 “Metric inch”? Jks. This is one of my favourite videos you’ve ever done. Really nice to see in depth tests like this, even if it wasn't a throwaway unit, it wouldn't be wasteful in the slightest to learn all this.

I can strongly suggest tenacious tape for permanent fixes to most air mattresses. Not sure if there is something about the surface texture on these that would make it less effective, but it’s worth a look. Basically ripstop with a contact-cement like adhesive, so it’s lighter, thinner, and at least as strong as the type a patches. I usually carry a small roll, because it’s also good for patching jackets, tarps, etc. The alcohol is to remove skin grease, so use your judgement, but when you need it, you definitely need it.
Thanks for this. I have been considering the G7 for a while now, but wasn't sure if it was worth the price. This answered a lot of the questions I had that I couldn't find elsewhere. I'm gonna go for it!

All the gear reviews. This is great.
I came back to point out that even for camping it could be a nice purchase. At 235D for the base material its way more rugged than any camping mattress I've seen. Throw that down with a rainfly and you can skip carrying an extra tarp to protect the mattress. Might not be $800 nice though, but interesting thought.
I don't know why RUclips recommended this video, I don't understand 80% of the terms used here, and I've only recently started climbing up walls at a climbing centre. And yet I found this interesting

You didn’t cover the fly, if you have two pods bunk bed style does the fly still work or does it need to be in side by side orientation? Also how waterproof/ abrasion resistant is the fly?… asking for a friend
Finished watching it, and I'm never going to need this as I'm probably never going to sleep on a wall.. But weighting 240lbs, I do feel some of these number are low. I mean if I were to be careful it would do the job, but stepping at the wrong place seem to potentially be close to the damage part. You got to respect and be gentle with gear like this I guess.
As a regular person who prefers to have her feet firmly on the ground unless being in my bed or lounging on a couch, this was both terrifying and fascinating to watch! I could never see myself hanging off a cliff in any way even if I wasn’t disabled, but it sure does look like a pretty comfy (but expensive) hammock for a porch, balcony or garden 😅
@HowNOT2 would you still recommend a regular double portaledge for a first-timer?
22:28 is where yor resting heartbeat can DROP a notch!
I imagine it's waaay harder to blow up a mattress at a high altitude so that's quite impressive.
I had to do it a few times above 18,000 ft in the Himalaya. Its freaky because it doesnt take more effort it just makes you insanely lightheaded very quickly. It kinda sneaks up on you, good trick is to inflate it before dark so u can track your tunnel vision.
Maybe it's the fact that I can't see your rope set up, but this video just makes my stomach turn lol. Stay save ya'll, and take your time. God Bless!
Last time I scaled El Capitan, I found myself laying on a G7 about half way up, and the comfort, stability, and support made it feel as if you were standing on the ground itself. It was in that moment I realized the stability of the ground was what was comforting and what was my calling, I descended that day and haven't climbed since. Can't recommend this product enough, I've traded in my van that I would stay in on climbs, I used that towards a house, met a woman and started a family. If it wasn't for the G7 I'd probably be half way up on El Capitan right now with a kinked neck and a calf cramp, but now I have everything I ever could dream of! Thanks G7! I acutally use the G7 now as a floatie in my outdoor pool. Life is good.

It'd be way too difficult for me set that up properly due to the fact that I'd be paralyzed with fear.
The thought of ever needing something. Like this terrifies me. If I was on the side of a cliff, I wouldn’t be sleeping. I’d be screaming.

Always love seeing footage of people climbing bc unless it's a drone or whatever that means there's at least another person doing the same climb as the in-camera guy...but while semi or fully professionally doing film + sometimes sound.

My wife and I were half way up Crack in the Cosmic Egg, a climb in Zion a few years ago. I set our double ledge up on existing anchors. 3 drilled in pins, the original anchor system. We both got comfortable sitting with our feet out, back against the wall, dinner in hand, and a 600 foot dead vertical view of the ground below us. When All of the sudden we dropped 2 inches. My wife causally looked over at me. And the look on my face shocked her to the core. HOW ARE WE NOT DEAD!!, was written all over my face. I forgot that when I got to the anchors there were 2 D-rings sideways all slings came off of them. They were tensioned so tight that I could not rotate them and I forgot about them. I’ll never forget that feeling of why aren’t we dead.
How’d ya get hold of the only, singularly unique sudden? Also, how’d u not die?

Great review!
Thinking about it logically, for a really big rip the best way to repair it would be to stitch wide webbing inside to maintain the structure with heavy duty thread and a curved needle, then just patch on top.
Don‘t you think that maybe the fishing line was for sewing it shut?
With a hole as big as that one it would increase stability immeasurably if the two sides at least held together tightly.
You can also test for bubbles with some watered down soap in a spray bottle
depending on the nature of the adhesive maybe using some aquaseal around the fishing line to help fill the void around the line and tape.
What happens if something hot touches it when inflated? A cigarette / gas stove or something

Old plumbers trick you could use to see if there is air leaking. Mic dish soap and water in a spray bottle. Spray it around the patch, and if there is air leaking it'll start blowing little bubbles. Use to use it to find breaks in LP air hoses.
That's how I was taught to find leaks in tires 👍
Outdoor research gear is amazing btw, nice shirt!
Great video, as usual. Interesting and informative about a unique product.
One nitpick about the dialogue:
When you start break testing the butterflies and webbing loops, you point out the mfr's "0 KN" rating, break the loops, and describe your test results as "the 'actual rating' is xx KN". That isn't really correct. The "rating" is still 0 KN; your test result "exceeded the mfr's rating, and measured xx KN".
One other thought: If you're repairing a hole (on a wall or at home), using some kind of roller or smooth rounded surface (spine of a carabiner, handle of a hammer, etc.) could help effectively press the patch onto the surface of the mattress.
