Hard to Handle hands down! It's so playful and fun and they used the actual recording of their dancing in he film! Pick yourself up is a close second though:)
I met Ms Rogers back in 1972 i believe, she was still so pretty and very sweet to me! It was some kind of special thing going on in Huntington Beach where I lived, my daughter was 2 months old and Ms Rogers commented on how cute she was. My daughter is now 50! I wish I could remember what was going on, I was just going to the HB Mall to get baby clothes and happened to walk in the entry where they were setting up, I saw the sign, then her, she just looked so beautiful! it’s a nice memory to have.
Yes, I kind of like "Pick Yourself Up" myself. Believe it or not, I first heard that song on "Captain Kangaroo" when I was younger. It was sung by a chorus of men and was accompanied by film footage of birds learning to fly. But I never knew until years later that the tune was originally from an Astaire and Rogers movie.
I don't disagree with their list, the order or anything. I mean, it's Mr Astaire and Ms Roger's. I just love Pick Yourself Up. It just makes me feel good every time I watch it. I also love the whole song and dance routine to Let's Face the Music and Dance.
I’m 30 now and I’m so glad my aunt got me into watching the Fred and Finger movies when I was a little girl. I loved their connection since then and now that I’m older I can appreciate the hard work and artful beauty of the dances. Love their chemistry in the dances, acting scenes and singing. Lovely romantic onscreen dancing duo!
Who didn't love watching these two dance. They were so beautiful together no matter what they were dancing too. You can just feel the way they fit together
I could and have watched them dance all night. Even though I am a 100% disabled vet, and there is no way I can dance, watching Astaire and Rogers is totally fantastic.
RIP Fred Astaire (born Frederick Austerlitz) (May 10, 1899 - June 22, 1987)(aged 88) and Ginger Rogers (born Virginia Katherine McMath) (July 16, 1911 - April 25, 1995) (aged 83) you will truly both be missed and my prayers go out to you both and your families. Thank you for entertaining us all the years and you both make a beautiful and talented dancing pair.
'Let's Face the Music and Dance', a film within a film, best brings out the dramatic talent that supercharged their expertise as dancers. Irving Berlin's soundtrack and RKO's orchestration hit the heights.
I could watch "Cheek to Cheek" forever, what a gorgeous number! Lol, even Ginger & Fred together dancing or singing or anything I could watch forever! SUCH an iconic pair, loved learning about their films in film studies class! ☺️😌👏🎶💃
I knew Cheek to Cheek would be at #1!! I mean COME ON!!! Fred Astaire can make you swoon and make you feel all floaty and happy. It’s so beautiful and romantic ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers have always been my favorite Dancers. There's no better dancers. I love their movies also. I love Fred & Ginger, GOD BLESS THEM BOTH ✝️✝️
Let's face the music and dance and Cheek to cheek are my all the time favorite. They dance beautifully, so stunning and classy. I really love them. They're THE BEST! 🤩
I watched a Carol Burnett parody of Rogers/Astaire movies and it was phenomenal, they truly captured both of their essences and I love the fun they embody in their dances The 1949 film looks like a moment never passed. They are truly legends of dance Thanks for this video!
I only saw tittle and I love this. Gold era Hollywood and musicals with Ginger Rogers and Fred Aister 🔥Couple days ago I saw for the first time Royal Wedding - It's must watch 😎
The floating brigade. As they make you too, float into another world full of beauty, poetry, dreams, love and dance. Thank you, magnificent Ginger and Fred!
I don't think I can pick a favorite; they are all too good! I have the complete collection on DVD and it's been awhile since I've watched Fred and Ginger. I need to break them out again. Pure artistry.
I can’t believe The Continental dance didn’t even make the list just an honorable mention? That dance is my all time favorite!! It’s gorgeous from her dress to the diverse dancing! And that elegant stair dance! Wow!!
My wonderful Dad was 22 years older than my Hawaiian Chinese mom ( He was a blond haired blue eyed charmer) they had a story tale love to the point that my friends in the Islands pointed out that they were always smooching!! He introduced me to the real talent from his teenage days and in 2023 I cannot thank him enough to see the stunning artistic performances of these movies and I am passing on his love and legacy
Ginger Rogers played the Fairy Godmother to Leslie Ann Warren's Cinderella. I remember my mom telling me as a kid that the godmother was a HUGE star with a long career. Evidently, she was understating.
Whenever I see these two, all I can think of is a quote my old dancer teacher said, "Sure he (Fred) was great, but don't forget that Ginger Rogers did everything he did…backwards and in high heels." I later learned that this wasn't something original she'd come up with, but a quote from a very, very old comic strip. xD
Of all the female dancers, she was the only one so ungracious to her partner. She forgot how he picked her up and swung her around among other things she didn’t do.
I read a story about the Cheek to Cheek number - don't know if it's true. Ginger loved that feathery dress and insisted on wearing it. Fred hated it; lol, he said there were feathers all over his tux, in his mouth, etc. - they were floating around everywhere. You couldn't tell on film!
I love the art deco glamour and sweeping drama and beauty of "Never Gonna Dance" in Swing Time and "Face the Music and Dance from Follow the Fleet and, of course "Cheek to Cheek" in Top Hat. But there's something fun and skillful and effortlessly stylish about them "dressed down" with Ginger in trousers...pants.....in "Bouncin' the Blues" in The Barkley's of Broadway, "I'm Putting All My Eggs in One Basket" in Follow the Fleet, and "Isn't It a Lovely Day to Get Caught in the Rain in Top Hat.
I’m surprised you missed the Yam song from Carefree. That dance is iconic and one of my fave dances of theirs bc it has a part where there are tables around them and in each one he puts his leg up and then swings her around and land perfectly on each chair. It looked extremely hard to do and amazed me as a kid and still now even at 30.
Ginger and Fred were like bread and butter..wonderful together but 'The Girl Hunt Ballet' with Cyd Charrise from 'The Bandwagon' was another of my top favorites. Recently saw a clip of Cyd Charrise ... at the AFI tribute to Ginger...blowing a kiss to her from the stage.
I agree with your selections, but for sheer skill, I would have to say "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off" is my Number 1 pick, with "Dancing Cheek to Cheek" a very close second for its elegance.
1. "I'll Be Hard to Handle" (Roberta) is one of the few numbers they did together - the only one? - where their tap-dancing was recorded "live"... which is why you can hear Astaire's impromptu vocal sounds as well. After that, the sound of their tapping would be dubbed later by Hermes Pan. 2. The omission of "Let's Face the Music and Dance" (Follow the Fleet) and "Pick Yourself Up" (Swing Time) is unfortunate.
That’s interesting I didn’t know they were dubbed all along after that, so many sequences together though, the true grit and charm they both have individually shines even brighter when they dance together!! I’ll have to go back now and watch that whole scene just to enjoy it more now that I know all this. Thanks for the insight!! 😊👍
Thought Pick Yourself Up from Swing Time would be there for sure. I also love the dance contest in Follow the Fleet. Bouncin' the Blues is great, notice the costumes are similar to Hard to Handle.
I agree on both of these! The dance contest features such intricate footwork, and "Pick Yourself Up" just makes me feel so wonderful. I love Ginger's expression in this too--a sort of bemusement mixed with growing exhilaration that this inept student actually can dance, and that dancing with him is such fun!
I don't disagree with their list, the order or anything. I mean, it's Mr Astaire and Ms Roger's. It's all Great and awesome. I just love Pick Yourself Up. It just makes me feel good every time I watch it. I also love the whole song and dance routine to Let's Face the Music and Dance.
When Ginger started to cry to ‘ you can’t take that away from me. ‘ such a beautiful song and I’m glad they got to dance to it. I always loved their dancing. I have all their movies. Flying don to Rio,Roberta and Follow the fleet are fun movies with joyful dancing. The other movies are more romantic and Lucille Ball and Betty Grable co-star.

Donald O'Connor in 'I Love Melvin' (1953) and Gene Kelly in 'It's Always Fair Weather' (1955), though 'Shall We Dance?' preceded both by quite a bit.
I agree with most of these, though I'd drop the "Barkleys of Broadway" numbers in favor of "Pick Yourself Up" {"Swing Time")and the scintillating dance contest number from "Follow the Fleet." And I'm partial to the beautiful dream sequence from "Carefree." As they leap from one giant lily pad to another and he swings her around it's romantic and glamorous and, well, carefree! I"m glad you included as an honorable mention "I'm Putting All My Eggs in One Basket." It's so witty and it must have been so hard to get the "wrong" timing just right. "Dancing Cheek to Cheek" is my no. 1, too.
What about the famous "Pick Yourself Up" from 'Swing Time'. The iconic "Let's Face The Music And Dance" from 'Follow The Fleet' and the hypnotic dance from 'Carefree'?
This may have been their most memorable number, but "Cheek to Cheek" wasn't one of his happier times dancing. Apparently, the feathers kept flying off and into his face.
Although the circumstances leading to Ginger replacing Judy Garland in The Barkley's of Broadway were very sad, I love that we got to see Fred and Ginger one last time and in Technicolor!
How could you possibly make a list of the greatest dance numbers by Astaire & Rogers and NOT include Pick Yourself Up from Swing Time and Lets Face the Music and Dance from Follow the Fleet? I mean you even left it out in the Honorable Mention section. How ridiculous. Those two numbers are generally regarded by serious dance critics and dance historians, along with Cheek to Cheek, as their three masterpieces. Overall the list was good but without those two additions it wasn't great.
"Cheek to cheek, still so complete, still so replete." "Exquisite & supreme. A pair beyond compare." "Emotion & devotion, ever so meaningful and movingly expressed." I'm shocked that Pick Yourself Up from Swingtime wasn't included nor was Let's Face the Music and Dance, two of the most iconic of the Astaire/Rogers reperatory.
You guys should make a video of top 10 male female (musical or not) classic Hollywood movie duos! Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland should be on that list! Along with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. I also enjoy Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn's chemistry in movies, as well as Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, great chemistry, they even got married to each other ❤️. 🙂 Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds were great too in Singing In The Rain.
What's YOUR favorite Fred and Ginger dance scene? Let us know below!
all of them are amazing
I would have replaced the one from "Roberta" with "Pick Yourself Up, Dust Yourself Off, Start All Over Again" from "Swing Time".
Hard to Handle hands down! It's so playful and fun and they used the actual recording of their dancing in he film! Pick yourself up is a close second though:)
Cheek to Cheek, you nailed it. After that, Night and Day.
Cheek to cheek, of course
Betcha anything those two are still dancing together to applauding audiences in heaven. Fred and Ginger were legendary.
I met Ms Rogers back in 1972 i believe, she was still so pretty and very sweet to me! Lucky you !
I’m partial to Swing Time’s “Pick Yourself Up”. That one is just so fun, it’s always been my favorite 😍
It is SO hard to choose, but the dancing and originality make this my top as well!
And I love Ginger's dress in that number--so simple and it moved with as much grace as she did--a beautiful flow.
I don't disagree with their list, the order or anything. I mean, it's Mr Astaire and Ms Roger's. I just love Pick Yourself Up. It just makes me feel good every time I watch it. I also love the whole song and dance routine to Let's Face the Music and Dance.
Amazes me how ginger could dance to that quality wearing high heels.. A lot of women can't even walk wearing them lol

Some things just can't be topped - Ginger and Fred dancing are timelessly and joyfully the best!
From what we see from Judy Garland and Gene Kelly, I think they are a close matchup between Fred and ginger
I just love seeing how performers REALLY enjoy each others company. In every one of these clips, they look genuinely enamored with one another.
Who didn't love watching these two dance. They were so beautiful together no matter what they were dancing too. You can just feel the way they fit together

What an awesome danceduo. Leave it to Fred and Ginger to tap on rollerscates.
Fred & Ginger are forever classic and will be revered as the best of their era.

I guess nobody could ever dance like Fred and Ginger.
Only One person said him self Tom Holland.
Would love to see outtakes from any of these scenes.!3 films in 1935! Amazing!
"Start all over again" from Swingtime, was definitely one of their bet---can't beleve it was omitted...
