This is how Ebert started his review of the movie. This all that has to be said: "There is a scene in "The Fabulous Baker Boys" where Michelle Pfeiffer, wearing a slinky red dress, uncurls on top of a piano while singing "Makin' Whoopee." The rest of the movie is also worth the price of admission."
A woman I went to church with was Roger Ebert’s nursery school teacher. Champaign-Urbana was quite an interesting place to grow up in this middle of nowhere, Illinois.
Watched this more than two decades ago but still love watching it now. Her beauty, her charm, her performance, her grace... Everything about her is absolutely amazing!!!
Pfeiffer absolutely kills it in this number, worth the price of renting the film all by itself. She and the Bridges were terrific and deserved the Oscar nominations they got for this film.
Being a piano player myself, I loved this movie when it came out. I remember trying to replicate this scene for a high school talent show back in 1991. I was playing piano and a singer friend of mine at school was going to replicate Michelle Pfeiffer's part. Sadly, we found out earlier that day the principal wouldn't allow her to writhe around on top of the school's grand piano so she had to walk around it instead. Damn puritanical principals. Lol
Know why I disagree? Batman Returns when she comes back from the dead and has the huge hair does it for me. All curly , messy and dead look makeup. Also the party scene where she is all done up. Honestly my heart melts even now. As much as I love her in this scene I think she’s even more attractive aged 60. Ohhh what a woman. What a damn woman
You know what did it for me: every scene I have scene her in. However, Check out the very first time you see her in Ladyhawke. She takes Mathew Broderick's breath away and every one else as well.
did anyone notice that Michelle‘s apperance was recorded with only THREE takes? 1) the intro from 0:00 to 0:31 ; 2) the legendary Ballhaus-circle from 0:32 to 2:06 ; [then a quick view into the spectator‘s area] 3) the finale from 2:09 to 2:38
Yeah, three long takes, but God knows how many takes they did to get these three perfect takes. Anyway, she really moved elegantly in this scene. Every posture and little move she made was perfection.
I read that 2) and 3) were originally intended to be a single shot, but getting off the piano was so tricky the two scenes had to come from separate takes with the spectator shot in between. Worked out well because the spectator shot showing the waiting staff having stopped serving in order to watch really contributes to it.
Omg that scan of the audience had me laughing! I thought the performance was for a gentleman’s club and when I saw the older couples I almost fell off my couch. And who knew Pfeiffer could sing like that!
Michelle Pfeiffer, born on April 29, 1958, is celebrating her 60th birthday today (4-29-2018). UPDATE: On April 29, 2024 she celebrated her 66th birthday. Michelle Pfeiffer is an American actress. One of the most bankable stars in Hollywood during the 1980s and 1990s, her performances have earned her numerous accolades including a Golden Globe Award and a British Academy Film Award, as well as nominations for three Academy Awards and a Primetime Emmy Award.
The piano and singing were pre recorded. Michelle was lip synching to her own song and Jeff actually had to play the real song on dummy keys. He couldn't pretend to play or he would be caught out by real players. Shows the attention to detail
For anybody else who watches Will and Grace, I love the scene where Karen makes Will serenade her to win her over as a client. And she tells him to get on the piano and put a little “Michelle Pfeiffer” into it LOL
LOVE THE PIANO TUNE. JEFF BRIDGES DID A GREAT JOB ON THE PIANO IN THIS SCENE AND MICHELLE PFEIFFER SANG WELL AS SHE WAS LOOKING JUST ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS AND BEAUTIFUL. THE RED DRESS PLUS THE RED LIPSTICK WAS JUST THE PERFECT LOOK FOR HER FOR THIS SONG AS SHE IS ON THE PIANO MOVING SMOOTHLY WITH HER VAMPISH LOOKS AND HER SEDUCTIVE VOICE ACTUALLY MADE THE AUDIENCE FALL IN LOVE WITH SUSIE. I LIKED THE MOVIE AS WELL AT THE SAME TIME ALONG WITH THE ACTORS👏👏👏👍
This scene is even better within context of movie. I’ve only seen it once, but was riveted. As I remember, this part has the additional humorous element that it is put on behind the staid Beau’s back! Is it just me or does it seem like these types of films are not being made now?
One of my favourite movies of all time! Such a bitter sweet story. I have always worshipped Michelle and always will. It makes me so sad when you bring up Michelle's name amongst younger people today and they're like, Michelle who? Cretins!
Great movie. Michelle Pfeiffer gave it real class. Lost the use of my left index finger from a blower fan blade. Drove 200 miles to find a Russian hand specialist who fortunately needed seriously damaged fingers or finger to teach others also. The surgery was free and he saved my finger though always numb and incapable of enjoying the guitar at any professional level. I just hoped for better after six years. I really liked Michelle.
Someone noticed the great camera job ? In 1989 it was a revolution to turn the camera in a 360° movement without break.Michael Ballhaus made it possible. They said " he let the camera dance" .
As I posted on another clip of this movie ... I knew a couple of the men working on the film in Seattle ... they said after they completed the filming of this scene, the men had to be hosed down with ice!!
Good Lord, the vocal talented and movement alone, coupled with her sultry voice, beautiful eyes and gorgeous body, wow, just wow, no wonder Tony Montana gave it all up for her.
The most amazing part of the Red Dress scene was when she stepped down on the edge of the keyboard in high heels. I've always wondered if there was some sort of hand hold out of camera range, or perhaps a helping hand from a crew member.

you should've promised not to have her sing on the piano and then have her do it no matter what. screw the principal, congrats to your idea! ;)

Oh yeah you really need to be a Piano Player in order to enjoy this movie. Probably why it flopped.

Absolutely. Pfeiffer in her 20's/30's was just stunning. A rare look.
@@robertjensen1048 She still looks pretty good today.
she should have got the Oscar, the whole movie, all of them.
Or one of the brothers. Great acting from all 3 leads.
totally agree. one of my favourite movies.
she lost that year to Jessica Tandy in "driving Miss Daisy".
Michelle should have gotten an Oscar for just being Michelle!!! (Lifetime crush)
Absolutely amazing. Michelle is a force of nature.
Her performance in just this seen is awe inspiring. To look so beautiful and have her acting chops-the gods must be crazy.
Michelle Pfeiffer was nuclear hot in this scene. Not that she wasn't hot elsewhere or at other times but in this scene she is pure perfection.

geez, it is really hard to take your eyes off of her..couldn’t find the right words to describe this woman, Michelle is everything. ❤️
What a great and amazing scene it is!!! Michelle and Jeff's performances were awesome!!!
This could have gone on for the remaining verses and I'd have been glued to every note. What a great performance.
Such a great scene. How the hell did she get off that piano without breaking her neck? 1 tiny, narrow perch in those high heels? Insane!
I was thinking the exact same thing when I saw the scene. That's movie magic for you!
Heard her say in an interview it wasn’t easy and she really didn’t want to do it. I imagine.
look closely... appears like they glued rubber soles to the bottom of those high heels.
