  • In 2019, Paris Opera Ballet returned to China after an entire 11 years since its last presence.
As one of the oldest ballet companies in the world, Paris Opera Ballet plays a major role in the development of ballet. This time, it presented the classic Swan Lake and a selection of contemporary works at Shanghai Grand Theatre.
From the dance move, details of the costume to stage setting, it all embodies the artistic traditions of Opéra national de Paris that have been passed down since 1669.
As media partner, Hantang Culture brings you comprehensive coverage both on and off the stage. Tap the video above to appreciate timeless elegance from the tiptoes.

POB is not one of the oldest ballet company in the world, it is the first and the oldest one ! Ballet and the whole classic dance vocabulary are in French because it was created in France, by the king Louis XIV in the 17th century; he was a "dancer" himself in his Versailles' palace (it is good to be the king !)
the modern ballet as we know it was also pretty much French with Italian and Russian scenes developing also in the 19th century with the great ballets that we know now, Giselle, le Lac des Cygnes, etc ....and with the help of wonderful musicians (Tchaikovsky for exemple)

I appreciate the excellent training and the reputation of the Paris Opera Ballet, for me it just doesn't translate on to the stage. For some reason the men are better than the women.

I agree. The women of the company used to be incredible, but for many years now their classical technique seems to have been slipping. They’ve also been promoting to etoile a number of ballerinas who seem to have been elevated based more on their reliability and lack of propensity towards injury than artistry. There are some exceptions - like the wonderful Dorothee Gilbert - but overall the current roster of female “stars” is quite dull. Some of them, such as Laura Hecquet and Alice Renavand, often look very exposed in the classics. I also agree with you about the men being much better. I can’t think of a better or more well rounded male dancer in the world than Mathias Heymann, for instance. He’s extraordinary.

@@kdub10009 Yes, we sadly regret the Pontois, Thesmar, Khalfouni, Loudières, Pietragalla, Guillem, Legrée, Letestu, Gillot of the 80's and 90's. Is it because of a lesser quality in the dancers' training at the école de Nanterre or in the company? A lot of current dancers don't seem to have much of a musical or artistic culture - when you hear interviews, most don't seem very articulate or knowledgable, even about dance history. I think this might be the real reason behind the lack of excellence in the current crop of étoiles. I love Alice Renavand in Le Parc but it is true that she does not seem at ease in most romantic or classical ballets.

Agree with KK concerning to the womens' level ; few dancers have the title "Etoile" without the level, except for D.Gilbert. The mens'level is much better.
