Your favorite professors favorite professor is back and school is in session ladies and gents.
Always consistent with quality content, good job delivering what you care about. From fishing to cooking, diving to bushcraft, and especially the science side of things, you do what you do well.
Thanks so much John! That means a lot!
You know it’s a good day when the Doc drops a vid 👍 hell yeah!
Great to see the next video in the series!
Great Video Kevin, always enjoy watching you spear fish and teaching. Looking forward to more adventures in and out of the water, you are a source of goodness. 🥰🙏🌟👍
Thanks! I always appreciate your feedback and positive encouragement!
Awesome tips Kevin! Great instructional video. I'm looking into doing some free diving spear fishing
Thanks! That is awesome! Let me know if you need a guide!
👋 glad to see you back
Really enjoy watching your videos. I always learn a lot.
amazing content as always!!
Good Stuff Kev. Its cool you are making this video series. It is one I always thought about making, but don't have the time. You did a good job with this one.
Thanks man! Much appreciated!
loved everything about this video, great job!!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
dude these are so useful!! Thanks Kev💪
These videos are amazing. I appreciate all the detail that you give. I can’t wait to start spearfishing this year. You have motivated me to buy my gear and get out there.
Thanks! I really recommend renting gear the first time to try it out, but I am glad you are taking interest. Let me know if you need a guide.
Great content 👍
Such a great video thank you for putting this put there!
Thanks Max!
Nice work Dez!
Good info on the wetsuits. For years every dive ended because I got too cold. I'm *only* 6-4, and didn't have a budget for a custom suit but finally found a Cressi suit that fit well and keeps me warm. What a game changer!
I too started with a pole spear just to see if I would enjoy it. Now it's one of my favorite things! It's not often I find clarity like this, those days are special!
Some literature that I read about Blue Rockfish stated that they rarely move more than 300m away from where they were hatched. That's one of the reasons that fishing out an entire school in an area decimates that local population. Either that one you saw was the "odd one out" or the rest of the school was fairly close by.
Interesting! Yes there is a sizable school we have seen near that area over deeper water before. Maybe he just needed some alone time... or was hoping we would invite him to dinner :)
Heck yeah , Dr. Kev! Can't wait to jump in the water and do some hunting now that I have my own gear!
Heck yes!!!! Glad to hear it Chris!
I AM SO HAPPPYYYY I FOUND YOUR CHANNEL!!! I LOVE YOUR CONTENT!
Glad to hear it!
I'm not very good at free diving. But, I absolutely love scuba diving! It came naturally to me also. It's an experience that can't be explained 🥰 My husband wore vented earplugs so he could clear. He had a bad eardrum. I took a non drowsy antihistamine a half hour to hour before diving due to my hay fever, it worked great!
Quality Kev. Just Quality.
Thank you!
Oh! now catch your name. Can't afford or skilled to dive. Mostly river fishing l'm exposed too but learning all l can from you. Solo camping is what l'm about. Never done so. Can't afford much, so will have to improvise. Wish l was lucky to find a real reel and rod as we describe suchlike. But learning from your improvising, l should be able too get by.👌👍😁. Kudos to you Kevin, appreciation man. In time I will be able to be corky too.
Awesome video, thank you 😊
Great video -- learned a lot.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video man. really enjoyed the detailed instruction 👍
Thanks! I have always wanted to try spearfishing Utah. I will hit you guys up if I end up planning a trip through there!
@@catchncookcalifornia1574 for sure man. I’d be glad to take you out and chase whatever freshwater species you want.
Great vid! Your dive buddy looks like a natural, too, very comfortable. And of course, a 5 mil suit makes it a little easier, along with the great viz. Here in Washington, we're all dressed like the Sta-Puf marshmallow man, with 7 mm, and the viz is crap most of the time. Kudos to Blue Tuna-good stuff Matt has!
Nice work!!!
Thanks!
Nice video dude!
Thanks!
Hoping to get my 4 kids and i the gear for spearfishing. Looks so relaxing. I love fishing but its time for this sport. Hope to see u out there.
Good information even though I’ve been snorkeling since I was 11 years old I still learned a few things from you thanks and great footage !
Glad to hear that!
Nice video 👏👏👏👏
Great tips Dr. Kevin. Would love to see you crush some halibut on the spear.
I will keep that in mind! I am trying to keep this series paralleling easy-to-get resources, then intermediate, then advanced, for entry level spearos so I will keep it on my radar as the series progresses.
Looks so fun! I gotta get a freediving sesh in with you at some point 🔥
Let's go!
Also great recommendation on suits, same problem here 😂
Hi beginner spearo here. PFI freediving level 1 certified. Love your content; long-time subscriber. Would love to dive with you some time in the future! 🤙🏽
Amazing
you are master of fishing
Another Awesome Video! When's your cookbook come out!? ;)
Thanks! Lol one step at a time.
Outstanding. I take it you're a doctor now, congrats. I can't believe you fried fish on that stove. The cast iron is a great call, helps temper the heat. Tight lines
Yup! I'm a doc now! Thanks for watching! Lol it is a small stove but I end up frying a lot of fish on it due to the convenience of transport!
Scallops are my favorite too!
Yeah buddy! Scallop vid coming soon!
I’ll love to join you guys one of these days :)
Join the email list and hopefully we can get you out sometime!
Top tips gents
Thanks!
You have a really lovely channel here man, thank you for taking the time to make this content ❤ I am going to be moving to NE Florida pretty soon and am interested in foraging. I’d be interested to get in touch do you run any local 1-1s or workshops? I’d love to fly out and check out the CA coast and take some lessons.
Thanks for watching and for reaching out! I sure do! You can check out my new website at catchncookcalifornia.com for details!
fresh water spear fishing would be interesting to see. It appeals to the rest of folks who dont have access to the ocean
We have a limited season here for freshwater which ended recently, but don't worry, it's on the list!
awesome video! although your equipment are a bit different then i have, but i support 100%! btw, i don't see many black & yellow rock fish where i dive. where you guys dive.
Thanks for watching. This was off of the Monterey Coast. For some reason there were a lot of black and yellows there.
Saw you on Mizukis video. Like # 227
Dez must've been born half merman because no way I'm that comfortable below 20 feet in the water on my first dive. lol
Can you add some info to this video description or another video about dive mask and facial hair? It's a tough topic to find good info on. Just found your channel today and really enjoy the content.
Greg, I will try to bring it up in a future video. The main solution that I have heard of is using lip balm/ chap stick on your facial hair where your mask skirt contacts your face. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for creating this 101 Spearfishing CA, this experience that you're sharing is awesome! It's something that I looked for quite some time, as I probably will be moving to the Bay Area. I wonder what length of the pole spear would you recommend being optimum for this close to shore hunting? And have by any chance used sling with trigger?
Andrei, Thanks for watching! I recommend the 5ft pole spear but 7ft gives you more range. Most species that you might take with a three prong are close enough that 5ft is totally fine and the longer the pole spear the harder it is to maneuver in and around tight caves where grass rockfish and black-and-yellows like to live. I have never used a sling with a trigger. I plan to do a vid at some point in the series with true Hawaiian slings, but since that is "free shafting" and central and NorCal vis is not exceptional I think having a shooting line attached to the projectile is a better system for these waters. I would recommend a pole spear to start with and a 70cm speargun after that.
@@catchncookcalifornia1574 Thanks !
Glad i found your channel. Do you have any experience or have you atleast heard of the pathos spearguns(specifically the pathos laser open pro)? I ask because i just got one as a gift!
I have never used one but I just looked them up. They look like they would work great for CA.
Thanks for the video!
I live in So Cal - is there a freediving license to catch? Kinda like a separate fishing license?
Nope. You just need a fishing license and Ocean Enhancement Validation. Make sure you go with someone who has experience though as there are more hazards in the ocean than I can count! An experienced eye will help keep you alive. Thanks for watching!
Awesome video man, where do you attach your gopro? I don't see it on your head. thank you.
Koala, I switch between head mount and hand mount perspectives with a few other tricks to get these shots.
thanks for the followup on the wetsuits I needed that, I hope you don't get flack for advertising because I specifically requested more info on that. I need a GOOD wetsuit, I have plenty of wetsuits that just pretty much suck so a quality product is what I'm seeking for sure. maybe talk to them about putting your logo on them, and I'll grab one of those. I'm also 6 2 and thin so not every wetsuit fits. I feel like you're my bro, man, any time you're in santa barbara hit me up we can bbq with or without my parents. Got an extra kayak if needed, and am finishing fixing up the hobie 16 for scuba
Willis, glad it helped. It will be a long time before I get a logo on a suit but that would be a sick future goal! I will hit you folks up if I'm in SB area!
@@catchncookcalifornia1574 do that, my parents would love you. I'm 42 btw but we keep our family tight. I've got a brother in Oakland too and keep wanting to meet taku but you know timing... Thanks again for the tips. Añy way you can just send me the logo and I can ask them to print it on? I'd be honored to rock a wetsuit that actually fits me and has your logo on it. You can't beat takus fish or crab though.i just wish he had front of the crab in front and back on back know what I mean? That would be epic, and I want all that on my wetsuit if I'm dropping the dime
Great video! I just wish I lived on the coast. One thing about sling spears, waaaay back when I actually did some diving and spearfishing with a sling spear, I had a spear with a spring steel paralyzer head that was indestructible, even if I hit a rock accidentally the tines would not bend. I had others that would get bent if you looked at them wrong. How are those inexpensive ones in that regard?
My spear tip was just fine. The point on one tine was very slightly bent after hitting a rock but nothing a file or some pliers couldn't fix in a minute or two. I didn't bother fixing it though and have landed several fish with it since filming that. So, yes, it seems pretty bomb-proof. Thanks for watching!
Quick question, Do you think a 6/5/4mm hooded full suit would be warm enough for Monterey bay spearfishing? Thank you so much!
It will be fine to give it a try though you will get cold after a while. If that is the suit that you have you can totally use it to start but I would eventually recommend a 5mm or 7mm open cell freedive suit. I recommend Elios Sub.
Glad to see you making these videos. I've spearfished in the past but haven't done it for close to 10 years now. I moved to the Bay Area a few years ago and have been interested in taking it up again but had no clue where to start since I never needed a wetsuit before just a rash guard. You do spearfishing trips too don't you?
Right on! Glad the series will be helpful then! Yes, I guide locally for shore-based spearfishing, diving for sea urchin, diving for Dungeness crab, scallops, etc. You can reach me for details if you are interested at catchncookca@gmail
Any tips on taking breaths and increasing bottom time? How to properly weight yourself? Thanks!
I just saw this comment, sorry! Yes I will dedicate segments in upcoming videos to these topics. There is a formula for proper weight that at least gets you in the ballpark. The formula takes into account your body weight and suit thickness. A 3mm suit is far less buoyant than a 5mm suit which is still less than a 7mm suit so the amount of lead required will increase as suit thickness increases. The general formula for a 7mm suit is 10% of your body weight + 3-5 lbs. So a 210lbs person with a 7mm thick suit would wear 21lbs+3-5 lbs or somewhere between 24lbs and 26lbs. The variation comes from whether your weight is mostly from dense muscle or buoyant fat reserves, but this formula at least gets you in the ballpark! Then it is about fine tuning in the water but it will be discussed in this weeks vid. More on breath hold later!
Hey how about gear needed for patty hopping for yellowtails. Finish off with catch and cook.
It is on the list for vids in this series but we are still many videos away from that. We still have a ton to discuss in terms of gear, breath hold, hunting technique, cabs, lings, halibut, etc. I will definitely try to make that happen though!
@@catchncookcalifornia1574 Yes! Technique hunting, need to step up my game. Thanks
Quick question: I live in socal, looking to get a 3 prong, what is an ideal size? is 8ft too big? I'm also looking at evolve pole spear since I can break it down to smaller sizes.
I will be testing evolve pole spears soon. I use a 5ft pole spear. I think 8 would be a bit on the long size. For me 7 would be the max length. The shorter pole spears do better with hole hunting in caves in the reef though a longer spear will let you shoot fish a bit further away. I am very happy with my 5 ft spears though as they are short enough for hole hunting but long enough for most reef shots.
@@catchncookcalifornia1574 thank you for your response! Would you recommend the full carbon or aluminum back and carbon front?
The playlist doesn’t have vol 1. Is there a volume 1?
Interesting! Volume 1 is "How to Freedive Spearfish California: New Series- Episode 1." I will be sure to add it.
Random question, I want to start learning how to freedive and spearfish/use hand spear, but my friend told me I might run into a problem with holding my breath due to me smoking marijuana, is it impossible to get good time on the bottom while being a smoker or will it just take more time and effort learning how to hold my breath for longer?
Nera, smoking anything is obviously not good for your lungs. That being said, there is no reason that you cannot be an exceptional freediver and a marijuana smoker. However, I strongly discourage you from diving while under the influence! Many mind-altering substances may make the mind feel relaxed but simultaneously increase ones heart rate. As a result, diving under the influence may cause a diver to think they have plenty of air left on a breath hold due to their relaxed state of mind even though their rapid heart rate is burning their oxygen quickly. This can lead to shallow water blackout (the number 1 cause of freediver death). Thanks for watching and good question!
@@catchncookcalifornia1574 thanks for the information! Will definitely keep in mind, appreciate the awesome content and the information I learn from it
Are you going to be up in Humboldt anytime soon? I emailed you a while back about a possible internship. I am going to get my RUclips back up and running with some fishing, foraging, ancient tech, catch/cook, and mountain biking videos coming out this whole month. If you're ever up here hit me up, I live by campus.
Would be fun to see say 3+ RUclipsrs out and about with Dr. Kev' each with own aspect of fish-hunt-cook .
Is there a certain you can harvest sea urchin like muscles?
A certain? Area or season? Yes, all areas outside the boundaries of Marine Protected Areas (MPA's) and State Marine Conservation Areas (SMCA's) that prohibit the take of them should be fine to my knowledge. Though, mussels are only safe to consume in the colder months. Even in colder months they can also remain toxic to humans. As of Nov 2022 mussels are still unsafe to harvest and eat in San Mateo County and portions of the North Coast. Call the Biotoxin Info Hotline for a pre-recorded message with more information on where and when mussels are safe to harvest and eat. 800 553 4133
Rock fishing regs in less than 300ft of water also applies to divers?
As far as I have read, shore-based anglers and divers are exempt from these rule changes. Thanks for your question though, I will confirm with a warden and incorporate the answer in an upcoming video!

@@catchncookcalifornia1574 R sharks an issue out there?
@@ugotlj4133 There are sharks in most places of most of the oceans of the world. CA is home to Great White populations that breed out here. We still dive and simply pray for no encounters. Maybe I should discuss sharks in a future vid in the series?
