I love hunting Halibut, but in my experience as far as the daytime goes, I find the big ones from May to October in muddy clay-like sand at anywhere from 10 - 30 feet. There's a really particular type of sand that they seem to like. I've rarely ever found them in coarse sand. Fine sand, and having it within proximity of structure, the higher the likelihood they seem to be around.
Can’t stress enough what you were saying about measuring them. An 18 inch halibut as a newbie looked like a big fish to me. It’s important for new spearos to really properly gauge a minimum legal 22 inch halibut.
