Appreciate the overview. I have been out of the scene for years. Find it interesting that bicycles are taking on similarities to off road motorcycles. Makes sense. Relieved to know my hardtail is not completely useless. Thank you!
I've found that the sweet spot for me is a technical trail bike like the Trek Fuel EX or Remedy. They can hit 90% of what you'd ever want to do except for the most extreme things that quite frankly I'll never do because I'll break before the bike will. I see you gents riding the Canyon quite a bit, which looks to be the same class as the Remedy; great choice!
@@Twongz_does_anything it’s just a little older it’s most likely okay as long as it’s not very cheap. Rim breaks are okay and work almost as well as discs if you know not to break right, full steel isn’t the best for a frame tbh, 3x6 is perfectly fine as long as you make sure not to stretch the chain out too much (3x6 is again usually found on older bikes) and 26’ers are okay it’s just because 29’ers are the hot stuff rn.
I think I made the right choice! Bought a Scott Scale 950 at the Toronto International bike show. It's a hardtail 29er packed with features, I've been fooling around in the snow and mud and having a sh*t-tonne of fun. It was between that and a cyclocross bike, and seriously, who wants to dismount everytime a climb gets gnarly? Not me! Besides I already have a road bike, now I have the best of both worlds!
Still ride my hardtail, infact it's the only bike I own. Love it! Could do with a video like "5 ways to ride your hardtail like a pro" or something, but great video GMBN
it was one of the best videos I've seen from you... I am all clear or at least I understand better which is which. I still a hard tail kinda person. the bike world is too expensive... but the main thing is to enjoy the ride... greetings from Honduras...
I ride a hardtail. I'm a junior Triathlete so I spend most of my time on the road. However, I got started on a mountain bike. I'm starting to try and get back into it more as I'm planning on doing an Xterra race this summer. Your videos are loads of help, keep it up!
this comment is 2 years old but if u dont have lots of money go with an xc or hardtail. The others are basically used if you have more money and want to get something specific to your area.
I feel like dirt jumping bikes between 2006-2009 were really great all around bikes. They had plenty of gears, geometry that was good for trail riding and decent for jumping, and strong enough parts for more aggressive riding. The 2007 kona shred is one of my favorite frames of all time.
Hardtail forces you to pay attention to the trail. Just personal preference, but mountain biking is about striking a balance between just all out thrashing it, and being precise. A hardtail gives me the inputs i need in order to best do that. The only time full suspension is needed is for huge drops.
What's the difference between an xc bike and a hardtail, it seems like an xc bike IS a hardtail as it has front suspension and is rigid at the rear? Also didn't they leave some category out here, like enduro bike?
I ride a hardtail, it's a Sundeal M4, the bike is not a high level but it has good components for its price, for a beginners bike, I think it's awesome.
I find it interesting that 20 or so years ago people were riding/thrashing the same type of trails and terrain with hardtails like nobody's business, but so many folks can't imagine doing so without an expensive full-suspension bike nowadays. My `97 GT Avalanche (owned since `99) never let me down in my younger years of thrash riding, and now I've outfitted it to be more of a XC cruiser that's still quite trail capable.
Hi guys, been watching your channel for a while now. Great job covering all the mtb bases. I was wondering if you could maybe make a top ten list of entry level mtb's that can be used by beginners. Maybe start with hardtails since those are, as you've said in the vid, the usual go-to bikes for us newbies :) more power to you guys!
I have a 26inch hard tail with fat high rolling tires and 100mm rock shock forks. Also have a 20inch bmx. I usually ride dirt jumps and skate parks on both. If I'm not riding park I'm up in the rocky mountains riding a mile or higher..
Recently I read on Bike magazine that Canyon are working on it. Canyon are smart and understand that the American consumer is more pampered and is a lot more demanding when it comes to customer service as opposed to Europeans for example. So they want to sell in America but they want to do it right. Hopefully it will happen sooner rather than later.
What "discipline" does the "hardtail" fall under? Hardtails by themselves have certain applications depending on setup (geometry, components, etc). The XC hardtail first mentioned is one. Then there's the AM hardtail, the trail hardtail, the dirt jumper... That last one was vague.
Hey guys, I'm gonna start by saying I love your channel!! Is it wise for me to purchase a Trek Session DH bike, considering ive never ridden DH but at one point years ago I was sponsored for bmx racing, and a B class motocross racer. I have 2 bike resorts within 2 hours of my house, that are designed around DH riding, and a variety of trails all around me considering I live in the Smoky Mountain, TN area. I love speed and jumping, but is a DH bike versus a trail bike a good option for me? Thanks!
+Stealth FG2 Hi! Firstly Thanks! Really great to hear people like what we do! The Trek is a great bike, If you want to ONLY ride DH however I would recommend you try a decent spec 160mm trail bike too and consider that as if you were a decent BMX rider you will already have a lot of natural bike skill and confidence on the bike which is usually the thing that stops people using their trail bikes to their full advantage. My advice would be - unless your planning on racing, buy a Trail bike, it will make you a better rider and get you more time in the saddle overall. Hope this helps!
+DarkVortex CS:GO & More Slope Style is a type of dirt jumping, basically more extreme toward REALLY huge jumps, and extreme style performance in air. DJ and SS bikes are very alike, SS bikes are more extremely build to do air tricks, Stronger, heavier, almost unable to ride normally.
+Global Mountain Bike Network Thank you for the reply. I've made my mind up through trial and error, and I'm purchasing both, DH & Trail bike. I've decided to go with the Commencal Supreme V4, and The Commencal Meta. I needed the best of both worlds considering all the great riding that surrounds my area. Thank you so much for such a great channel!! Endless Info..
after alot research, I'm keeping in FR to DJ bikes, these bikes are most versatile, a large FR or DJ bike, like Giant STP Large, can do most stuff on most terrain. Then keep a street MTB just for practice, a single speed bike for commuting
Wanted797 I have had my meniscus all but removed from my left knee after keyhole surgery (including cysts, satellite cysts, and added multiple micro fractures etc.) but I still ride a hard tail. My right knee also locks and is loose but if you use your body positioning properly it shouldn't be that bad unless you're riding high steep drops and massive jumps I suppose. Otherwise, bent knees, ratcheting and the ready position etc. etc. should get you through most trails, jumps, rock gardens etc. That said, it all depends on what problems you are having with your knees. Keep riding and I hope you get it sorted:-)

I like how hardtails are just slapped on at the end, there's hardtails versions of like all those bikes. My bike is a hardtail slopestyle and I prefer them over full suspension due to weight.
Yeah they are also a hell of a lot of fun. Also force you to be a better rider as you pick your line rather than pushing through it. It's the most flexible bike to have, because you can with practice ride really tough terrain, but also be able to enjoy the easy rides like a Sunday afternoon single track with the kids.
Thank you for information. I am new to cycling because I had ahealth problem I could not ride. Now for a long time the other problem is the terrain in my hometown. It is is a dense urban area, with terrible trafic. A lot of bikers get hurt because of recless drivers and bad roads are common. I thought I take the risk and buy a mountain bike. I want to buy a decend mountain bike with a price from 250-500€. I am not a sportive person, I enjoy riding though, theres a lot of climbing I must do where I live, Im not much into speed because I need to rebuild my confidence back, when I was a kid I risked my life every day with a bike I had, but Im not that crazy any longer. So Im not looking for speed, lightweight, easier for climbing, good and controling and stoping, safer. I am just starting to learn about bikes, this is my first lession, Im impressed so I subscribed and I hope to buy my bike soon. Please feel free to offer me any suggestion!
+Ben Stewart He did note that downhill teams were beginning to accept 27.5 as an alternative... As for slopestyle 26", why would you ever want 29"? The wheel would just get in the way of tricks, and there's zero need for added rollover capability on manicured courses...
I ride a freestyle bike, is a kind of a downhill bike with a single crown suspension with a bit less travel but more than a trail bike, but for street!
I Like To Buy And Ride In A Full Suspension MTB. But I Don't Have That Much Money To Buy These High End Bikes. I Like 'SPECIALIZED', 'FRR', 'CANNONDALE', 'SANTA CRUZ', 'BANSHEE' etc. I Love To Ride These Bikes. So I Bought Hardtails. I Have 'KROSS MAXIMUS' 26Inch Wheels With 18 Speed Gears (3×6) Gear Combination (Shimano 'TOURNEY') & Front Disc Brake (Mechanical) , 'COSMIC TRIUM' 27.5Inch Wheels With 21 Speed Gears (3×7) Gear Combination ( Shimano 'ALTUS & ACERA') & Dual Disc Brakes (Mechanical) (Brand - 'Tectrodracko') , 'FITTRIP VIPER' 29Inch Wheels With 24 Speed Gears (3×8) Gear Combination (Shimano 'DEORE') & Dual Disc Brakes (Hydraulic)& Front Suspension Lockout & Weight Adjustment . These Are The Three Hardtail MTB I Have Now. From This Year I Started To Save Money To Buy A Full Suspension MTB With 'Dropper Post' Available & 'Suspension Lockouts' . So Thank You For Reviewing Me Some Latest Nice Bikes.🖒👍🚩❤😎😃🙄. Full Suspension Bikes Are Cool & Fun To Ride I Think .Talking About The Front Suspension "Air Suspension Is Better Than Coil Suspension" . That's For Sure. No Doubt.
It is true that the hardtail is a very humble bike, I have recently taken it out on the local downhill track and I was riding with heavy duty full sus bikes. It did very well other then the chain falling off the front gears. I took it out again on a more forgiving trail and I had run lower tyre pressure. I noticed that going over roots and rocks was a breeze. I was looking at plus bike tyres and with plus bikes you generally run low tyre pressures. So a question popped into my mind, Can you run plus bike tyres on a standard hard tail, 27.5 inch tyres, 17.5 inch frame.
Depends on your forks and frame width because the plus size tyres and wheels might not fit between forks and back part of the frame. Best take it to your local bike shop and see what they say or do some more research and find out if you can run them on your bike
You can, just realize that the hard tail is less forgiving on rocky / rough surfaces as the backend isn't soaking up some of rough stuff like a full suspension would.
Fatbikes will probably always be a fringe thing. They're fun for a try, but not to my taste. Plus they are just not nimble. Anything moderately technical, and they fall behind in a big way. I ride an aggressive geometry hardtail with 2.6 inch wide tires, and I find that to be a good balance of being nimble, but still being able to monster truck right over almost anything.
lots of hardtails have a much slacker geometry which sets them up well for something like four cross racing or dirt jumping. Obviously the riding position for this kind of riding does not work for long period of time in the saddle!
after testing many bikes at my local shop went with a cheaper heavier hardtail the weight feels better than some of those lighter more expensive bikes and rear suspension just feels odd plus I love climbing and hardtail does it better. only way to know what works best for you test rides.
I actually ride a specialized Fox enduro with 140mm of travel. I love it, she's my pride and joy. Ive been dying to get back on the trails with it (It's still snowing and all right now from when I'm posting.) Also, bit of a question for y'all. Am I the only one but when I crash or anything my first thought is "Is the bike okay!?" Honestly I care more about the bike than myself. Am I the only one? Anyways this comment is too long, love the vids m8! Keep it up!
Enjoying the videos. I raced a lot during the 90's and have been out of the MTB world for the past 10 years. Great practical information on the technology and bikes of today. Any advice on evaluating used bikes like the '05 Specialized Stumpjumper?
Yes... It depends on the track u are riding... I ride an xc marathon fullsuspension bike with only 11,6kg and I can also overtake hardtail riders... But if u want a bike with the same weight for less than 4k u have to take a hardtail... to answer ur question... Yes the majority of people rides hardtails in xc cause they are more lightweight
im on a hardtail lol, but still debating about switching to an xc to for a comuter, and also testing my hard tail for a 28km run every day, no issues experienced atm
You guys should do a video of how to train for mountain biking when you don't have access to mountain trails. I love mountain biking but most of the year I live in an area where singletrack is not readily available. Just curious what the best physical and technical training techniques are when all you have is flat hard pack surfaces. Or maybe even how to train for MTB on a road bike? Just a thought- keep the great videos coming!
Yesssss!! Can you guys make a video about night riding and suggest which lights work best? Pleeeeeeaaaase and thanks in advance! I promise to give you a 'thumb up like' hehe!
Love the Hardtail at the end. Because it's like what I ride. Awesome video guys & great topic. Loved it.
Hardtail for life.
yes but some are better quality.
either way im still with hardtails.
I think hardtail better
Imran Becks suspension lockouts will be your best friend :)
what's the difference between XC and hardtail?
Imran Becks I thrash trails on my Dirt Jumper hardtail, but my small wheel size has almost killed me a couple of times
I personally ride a Cylco-cross bike it works great for the trails we have in Iowa and adds a fun new element to riding due to the lack of suspension

I ride a freestyle bike, is a kind of a downhill bike with a single crown suspension with a bit less travel but more than a trail bike, but for street!

Fatbike : Bike stands are for kids.
+Pienimusta Hate all you want, just ride one of those for a short distance theyre comfortable AF
+The Moe i guess he ment that fat bikes don't need bike stands
+Moon Pie i have one, it's awesome and smooth
Or people who can have fun like kids.
No Doubt.
that log in sea xd
+Riley Nayler ok thank you
so does that mean u can ride tenichal trails on a hardtail
You can, just realize that the hard tail is less forgiving on rocky / rough surfaces as the backend isn't soaking up some of rough stuff like a full suspension would.
You missed the rigid trials bikes.....sigh....the rigid minority overlooked again. Jk Good vid, but for real some of us ride fully rigid 26er trials.
They're saving that for the Global Trials Bike Network
nah, we need a global bmx network first
Should i buy trek fuel ex 5 or giant stance 2
Fatbikes are another fad and will be done within a year
It's been a year now, and it seems that fatbikes are staying.
it's been 2 years now
Fatbikes will probably always be a fringe thing.
You obviously don't live in Minnesota where we've been riding fatbikes for years and will continue. Probably a fad in your neck of the woods.
Three years and I still see them everywhere
Allmountain with a 150mm of travel rockshox Sektor fork and a 140mm in the back (rockshox monarch)
What is the difference between a hardtail and a crosscoutry bike ?
lots of hardtails have a much slacker geometry which sets them up well for something like four cross racing or dirt jumping. Obviously the riding position for this kind of riding does not work for long period of time in the saddle!
+Global Mountain Bike Network Thank you!👍
the price.
Moon Pie thanks for this insight. I think I’m gonna get a hard tail to start my mtb journey!
after testing many bikes at my local shop went with a cheaper heavier hardtail the weight feels better than some of those lighter more expensive bikes and rear suspension just feels odd plus I love climbing and hardtail does it better. only way to know what works best for you test rides.
I have a 2014 giant talon held up great through my abusive riding and many crashes.
For biking on trails I would recommend the Giant ATX 27.5
brilliant. I've been looking for a video like this for ages and this is really informative.
Keep it up!
Drooling over everyone of those examples.
Hi guys.. great content, thanks. Please also do a vid on steel, rigid bikes.. as well as HT long travel bikes..
Thanks!
Dunno but i just upgraded my rigid Fatbike with front suspension and now it's even more amazing.
Enjoying the videos. I raced a lot during the 90's and have been out of the MTB world for the past 10 years. Great practical information on the technology and bikes of today. Any advice on evaluating used bikes like the '05 Specialized Stumpjumper?
I want to begin doing enduro and I'd like to know if I can do it with a canyon spectral with 150mm fork. Could you help me please?
Is an Hardtail also good to come into XC or Mtb Marathon?
Love these vids, they have taught me much of my knowledge about mountain biking!
I wanna see some fat bike vs mtb vs plus in winter weather light snow to heavy powder :)
Keep up the amazing vids !!!!
awesome video!
im on a hardtail lol, but still debating about switching to an xc to for a comuter, and also testing my hard tail for a 28km run every day, no issues experienced atm
Hi Can you guys make a video to explain the different rear shock and pivot placement on a full suspension bike??
I have a question: will my 2000 euro giant hardtail carbon mtb break if I handle it like a downhill bike and do large jumps with it?
I have a very very heavy Xc bike but have upgraded to a dropper post and air shox (I an a beginner)
Great content! Thanks, guys!
Hardtail for me still have some fun and a good day out on a hardtail
Getting mine changed to 26x2125 26x3 config, getting it tomorrow 🤞🏼
Thanks guys , what is the best hacks for a new hard tail for a beginner, mods and a accessories, pedals etc ?
