  • On 12/19/2023 the Mass Coastal Railroad ran down the former Bay Colony Watuppa Branch for the first time. This video follows MC 2006 from New Bedford to the Watuppa Line and back. MC 2006 moved the BCLR engines out of the way and served Mid City Scrap before tying down in New Bedford Yard. This was the first time in decades that the Watuppa Line local originated in New Bedford Yard, just like it did back in the old days. MC4 is also seen in this video after the Watuppa Job finished up.

    This is a bittersweet video to watch. I’m sad that Bay Colony is closed, however I am happy that they were purchased by Mass Coastal. I look forward to seeing MC hopefully repair the neglected BC tracks. Great video as always!

    Tracks at 10:40 look like they're going to cause for a whole lot of rocking and swaying to a beat.
    Really though, it's bittersweet that a smaller carrier goes under because it's just one less in the world. Good though that they are now under a somewhat larger umbrella. With hope that the acquisition engines will retain a bit of their old livery under the new owners.

    Nice video as usual. Mike.
    I was surprised to see Bay Colony left the 2 Geeps on the Watuppa branch; did they sell out entirely to Mass Coastal, or just the Watuppa branch operation? I’m guessing the latter: I’d think if they sold those 2 Geeps to Mass Coastal. MC would have pulled them off the branch & sent them off to Hyannis for repainting.

      I think it was just trackage. Bay Colony's parent company is out of Florida, so I wouldn't be surprised if they just find a way to write it all off.

    any plans for track upgrades? Are those tracks through Hixville (and elsewhere) really that wobbly or is that just amplified by telephoto lens?

    • @beeble2003
      @beeble2003 6 месяцев назад +1

      A lot of it is telephoto compression, but the tracks do look like they're in pretty poor shape.

    First train since Mass Coastal takeover. Mass Coastal #2006 takes a two boxcar train on the Watuppa branch. the line will still be in use. I just don't know what Mass Coastal plans to do with BCLR Geeps. Wow

    Wow! Those tracks are really in bad shape!
    I am glad that MC bought out BC - they seem to have their eyes on keeping the local customers serviced! I hope they eventually knock out that extra mile in Fall River from Battleship Cove to the bakery some day!

    Great video! Thanks for posting! Was scared a couple of times. Was afraid that MC2006 was going to go to ground. Rail and bed are in rough shape. Opening scene, the only thing holding those tracks in gage is dirt and grass. Worth every moment though! Hopefully the change will have a bright future! Thanks!

      I hope they don’t scrap 1705 or 1706 and 1701 if it makes its way down to the Cape. I know 1705 and 1706 are in storage right now and 1701 is sitting unguarded.All they need is TLC they have a bright future. I guess storage is better than the scrapper

    So, how much mileage did picking up the bay colony give Mass Coastal, and we're the two already connected to each other?

    • @alwhalen3488
      @alwhalen3488 7 месяцев назад +5

      Mass Coastal expands their operating mileage by 8 miles with the Watuppa. They already controlled the last two miles but could not access it because Bay Colony controlled the 6 miles in between the MC New Bedford route and those last two 'in service' miles at the end of the Watuppa Line. There are 2.6 additional Watuppa Line out of service miles at the far end plus the 3.4 miles of the out of service Millis Line. In total 14 new route miles.

    Hopefully they utilize the BC equipment or at least find it a good home. The right of way needs work. Hopefully they plan to upgrade that also.

      I’d be surprised if MC keeps those locomotives. I don’t see where they need two more. If a buyer can be found at the right price, I expect they will be gone.

      Mass Coastal is not owned by Carload Express, it is owned by Cape Rail Inc. , which also owns the Cape Cod Central.

    "Wow some of those rails look pretty bad, some of those rails have more bends and twists then a cord of lickerish, you would think the R.R co. would go in there and R, and R, some of those rails, looks like a De-railment waiting to happen, heat, weather and just years of neglect have shown there signs.
