Having hung out with video game devs on many occasions, to the average game dev, wearing a trenchcoat/fedora/katana combo is actually unironically the coolest thing ever. Those are just the kind of people that want to work on games like DMC.
There's an ending in Shadow the Hedgehog where he beats up Sonic and proclaims himself "the most powerful hedgehog in the world."
Fun fact about the "Not in a Million years" Line:
When you unlock Dante's Devil trigger (basically his super mode) his hair turns white while it's active.
He also permanently gains a streak of white in his hair
It wasn't not in a million years -> 3 years later
It was not in a million years -> Several hours later
The streak of white grows even bigger within the game over time, to where at the end its barely black.

Why do people assume that something needs to be “westernised?”
Capcom execs were disappointed with DMC 4s sales as they expected them to be on par with Call of duty... For some reason. Capcom execs thought they needed to appeal more to the West for better sales.

@@BullFrogFace well dmc4 also sold worse than the other games, especially in the states, because they rushed it, and the producers instead of blaming its failure on themselves thought they had to make it appeal more to Americans so they got a British studio to develop and completely reboot the series, and after the absolute character assassination that was the DMC reboot, everyone pretends dmc4 was alright and Capcom just made dmc5 and stopped talking about dmc reboot entirely.
Capcom and other Japanese publishers took a beating in early 2000s by Western developed games.
They reacted by trying to Westernise everything they did for a while, assuming it would emulate Western success.
The issue is, they look a lot of the wrong lessons away and suffered for it. They eventually figured out how to be themselves again and its been pretty good for the last few years in the Japanese dev sphere again.
Worse part is, its not even US western. It's crazy spandex wearing eastern Europe "westernized". Old DMC was already cool in the US. So now he's an edgelord teen when the games fan base is all grown up.
You forgot how Dante and Vergil are fighting shirtless in the rain in DMC 3.

Yes Capcom told Ninja Theory to radically redesign Dante but I doubt they called Tameem over and told him. There will be backlash on the reveal, but in between making the game instead of trying to rebuild bridges back to the fanbase, we want you, with the help of one of our, Alex Jones, to piss the fans off even more. Pretty much bury the old games, and slander them anyway you can. Like say about how the original series, and Dante, isn't cool anymore, that'll really whip up a storm among the fanbase and get the game some attention!
You can't honestly expect to sell a game purely on fan backlash and controversy alone and expect it to do well because it won't happen. I blame Keiji Inafune for it. Custom made to what fans wanted indeed.

Transformers the Movie from 1986 had a great glam metal soundtrack and there is nothing that can pump me up more than Stan Bush. Plus Instruments of Destruction by NRG off the same soundtrack gets me hyped when I play 40k Space Marine

DmC upon original release (not the next gen one) gets 9's thrown at it from every reviewer. We didn't know back then but yeah, that game was for quadriplegic babies with early onset dementia (which is what most games journalists are) that's why it was so liked. Easy AF and cringe with shittiest writing and mediocre combat at best. No unlockables and everything extra was a paid DLC.
DMC4SE comes out, literally the granddaddy or Stylish Hack n' Slash games with combat system so advanced it still has not been topped by any game and is used as a frame of reference when comparing other great hack n' slash games' combat systems. Silly anime story (but heartfelt if you're into animés) and unlockables and extra content for days. Did I say days? Weeks. Having 5 playable characters who play completely differently from each other. Actual enemy variety and challenge and much more, ALL OF THAT for 24.99$. LESS than half price of a full retail game (let's see what other companies sell remastered games at that price? Especially having added so many things. Nah, it's a psp game that upon release cost 40$? Well, let's update the visuals slightly put it on PS4, REMOVE features and sell it for 60$. (Looking at you square))

Devil May Cry was one of the earlier games I played as a kid and I fucking loved it. I remember being so excited by Devil May Cry 2 when I learned you could actively shoot in multiple directions and shit.

What's hilarious is that my brother was good friends with Casey Edwards (The composer of Devil Trigger) all throughout high school. They played in a band for a while and it's amazing seeing him compose bad shit awesome scores and soundtracks for games and movies.
But! Ninja Theory totally redeemed themselves with Hellbalde: Senua's Sacrifice.
Um...sort of. It was still pretty damn pretentious at the end of the day. Senua's mental issues were actually very minor in the grand scheme of the plot and pretty much existed solely to push the game as trying something unique. Without it, it's just your standard walking sim broken up with bits of God of War Lite combat sections.
NT is a good company. All they need is freedom and money.
For DmC they had money, but didn't have freedom.
For Hellblade they had freedom but didn't have money.
Now, under Microsoft, they'll come up with awesome games
DmC:DMC is great but it's not DMC.
