If you watch Julie at ‘Pouring your heart out’ she mastered the art of leaving the resin to cure just long enough to do what she wants with all kind of colours... she is awesome.
Yes She is and can give you all kinds of ideas. She will try something new and keep trying different things till she gets what she wants. She also writes down how she did each experiment to refer back to.
What about aging one color for the hour, mix a second color in fresh resin and then mixing the fresh and aged materials and curing? Will you get better color pattern?
A lot of comments, haven't gone through them all. 3 things: 1) Use a temp gauge so you know when the exothermic reaction is just thickening the resin. 2) Mix 1 color and let it set (temp gauge or viscosity check) then mix/pour 2nd color. 3) Talk to Entropy and ask if using more hardener in one batch will work, might not cure correctly though. I use a Polyester resin that you add catalyst to. 5 drops/oz. If I over-catalyze, 2X, the 2nd color it thickens faster so the colors stay reasonably separate. A temp gauge is a good thing to have in the shop. Love your videos.
Hypothesis: freezing is unlikely to work because the cold inhibits curing. Once it comes back to room temperature, the resin effectively returns to its "just poured" state and cures the same as it normally would. However waiting for an hour lets it partially cure and makes it more viscous so it's just less mobile and less likely to mix further as it cures in the pressure pot.
This correct. Freezer slows the chemical reaction that causes the resin to cure. This is actually done in the real world in automotive refinishing, to extend the pot life of 2K paint
If working time is an issue, you could do both. Let it react for 45 minutes, put in the freezer for a while to slow the reaction down, then pull out, add colors and pour. If working with a large amount of resin, this might extend the window where it will pour but not mix.
Plus if it's in the freezer and still trying to cure (getting warm), it could draw in moisture from the freezer, adding water to the resin, causing even more problems, including cloudiness.
Exactly. Gentle heating and/or high shear mixing can serve to accelerate the reaction. Sometimes the addition of a small quantity of a “metallic powder” can also accelerate. Accelerating too fast can also cause the resin to be brittle. There are also thixotropic additives that can serve to increase the viscosity. If translucence is not a priority; then a pinch of cabosil fumed silica would be a great additive. Your example at the end shows that patiently waiting for the desired thickening just may be best!🤓🤩😎
OH! ALSO! If you let one color thicken up quite a bit then make the other color fresh so it's still thin when you pour, you can get some VERY interesting patterns. I did that with colored resin into clear in vertical pen blank molds and the results were spectacular. I poured the thicker resin into the thin from as far up as I felt I could aim and didn't touch it once the pour was done.
I love when your videos are funny and serious and when you’re teaching us, how do you make something it’s enjoyable to watch you can some people on the other stuff did you like you were boring you’re the best thank you man enjoy

Break them all into pieces, throw all the coloured pieces in a pot and put some clear resin in to join them and then use it as a really cool blank to make something from
I don't really even care THAT much about resin but I hit subscribe within 30 seconds of this video because YOU are freaking AWESOME! You just entertained the H$LL outta me and I laughed like a little kid. Well done. New fan for sure!
One thing I find hard to get away from is pulling the white into the colour. Pulling the colour into the white is very rewarding. Love everything you do. Thanks for sharing. 😊
I work small scale and don’t have a vacuum pot, so I warm my resins by putting the bottles in warm water to help prevent bubbles when I pour. Heating it quickens the curing process, so it gets thick quickly, and pouring it when it’s a little thicker helps. One thing I like to do is pour a dark layer and let it sit for a little bit then drizzle other colors over it. Then pour some clear while the drizzled colors are still wet and the base is sticky. You’ll end up with a neat 3D looking set of layers and the clear layer will look like a “peep hole” in the middle of the other colors. My husband and I love watching your channel, by the way!
I'm glad you finally really dug into this subject. I know I left a few comments on it a long time ago, but you know how that goes. Looking forward to seeing how you get along with this on a bigger resin and wood project.
Nick, been watching your fun vids for years, I get it, it's tough to come up with something fresh every week, stick to what your good at, have fun and turn something interesting, love ya bro
ZWhat’s up Nick about a year ago the first video I seen on turning with your video you were doing some crazy stuff with epoxy I got flat out inspired and addicted so now I got my shop going from nothing to the point I should do pretty much do anything just want to thank you finishing my first epoxy project tonight Rock on
I have been messing with resin for years, but just recently got the urge to make some "marbled" colored pieces and a pressure pot. I pictured swirls, layers etc. Nope, all blended, lol. I tried the waiting until just the right moment in thickness and then making my designs... MUCH BETTER! You definitely got to the right conclusion with your experiments and I appreciate the work you put into it. It was enjoying to watch and reconfirmed what I had learned experimenting myself. You're a very entertaining fellow! I wonder, what pressure and how long do you "cook" blocks this size usually? I have a small pressure pot but have noticed I actually get foam on top and sometimes MORE bubbles in the resin with pressure, than I did just mixing and pouring carefully and just leaving them be? I know the pressure pot should help me with this, but it seems to be hurting? Any advice? Thanks again for putting in the time to help us all, lol. Always a pleasure to see what you are up to. That intro! 😆😆😂😂🤣🤣 the red one is my favourite one (just saw it shatter as I was typing this) thanks for doing these experiments Nick! ... stay funky! 🕺
I think the blue one would look great once it is worked into a piece. I love the gentle swirls that were visible. But then blue is my favorite color so there is that. I wonder if you are able to use the cups you mix in over and over or if you go through a lot of them?
Your absolutely fun and talented. Thank you so much, going through a dry spell due to a toss of a jerk and the move has left me empty. Now I can get some new ideas and make some messes !
Love this experiment. The orange and red turned out excellent. And the purple is pretty as well just more subtle. I’ve got to try this tip. Thanks for sharing. ✌🏼🙂
Fun to watch! You are quite funny and your editing is cleaver. I use Deep Pour and after ruining well over a hundred dollars of resin and burl trying to find that perfect time to "swirl" is really frustrating. If you swirl too soon and/or too often you get a "muddy" mess. Obviously time, temperature and resin brand make a big difference. But what I'm finding with Alumilite Deep Pour the perfect time is somewhere around 8 to 11 hours after the initial pour and NOT stirring until it is the consistency of melted taffy. It peaks when touched, but settles flat/level within a minute or so. Then stir slowly, trying not to get too many bubbles. I just got some UpStart Deep Pour and will be testing it for "time to stir" on some smaller batches, before wasting resin on a larger pour. Also, I made a "curing box" 2'x2'x2' out of 1" solid insulation, that I installed a light for heat and a thermostat that maintains temp between 75 and 78 degrees. It works great for curing, but "swirling" is an all together different learning curve.
I have never searched for and downloaded a song so fast in my life! Veins by Ennio Mano .... this song....is a headache cure😭😭 I didn't know they still made smooth jazz like this!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
These were great experiments. Yes the red one was beautiful as well as the giant blank you had at the end. I'd love to see you turn the shards into necklaces. Also, Charlie working with you doing Father and Son projects would be fun. Thanks for the fun video. Hugs ♥♥♥
I like them all. Very pretty. You could take the shards and set them in clear resin and make a cool looking pot or maybe cool lamp with fairylights. They make for a funky piece for sure.
I love the experiments! Maybe once perfected, a crystal clear resin with colored swirls in it like a big marble would be crazy-cool! Oh the possibilities!!!!! :)
I love an experiment, the red and orange reminded me of the strawberry/orange cream boilings I can't find in the shops anymore. The blue mix is amazing 😲 can't wait to see what you do with the bits 👍
Hey Nick I use amazing clear cast and use an IR thermometer to check the temperature in the pot until it's around 40/50 degrees that way you get good colour separation I'm not surprised by the freezer result as effectively putting it in the freezer will cool down the exothermic reaction and essentially slow down the curing process
So in my own experiments with resin i learned to kinda put the cup in hot water for about 10 minutes to remove bubbles, this also made the resin start to harden way faster. I wonder if that would be similar to but faster than setting it out for an hour.

Yep, I was expecting him to put in oven or heat, not freeze it. Warm the resin so it cures faster not letting the colors intermingle for as long.
Plus if it's in the freezer and still trying to cure (getting warm), it could draw in moisture from the freezer, adding water to the resin, causing even more problems, including cloudiness.
