  • Fireflies thrive in this Connecticut meadow, lighting up the night sky with hundreds of yellow and green flashes.
During part of the summer, the New Canaan Land Trust firefly sanctuary offers tours of the meadow to showcase the light and rituals of the fireflies. Tours ended July 14, the trust said, but people are still welcome to visit the property.
Though many species of fireflies around the country are at risk of going extinct, according to a 2021 peer-reviewed study, the sanctuary is working to protect the thousands within the meadow.
